Marvel Powers United VR for Oculus Rift is already among us and for this a long succession of events had to happen. Since Marvel Comics was created in the late 1940s, many fans have wanted to enter the world or the skin of their favorite superhero in one way or another. Films and series aside, the first time it was possible to embody and control one of these characters was in 1982 with the Spider-Man video game for the Atari 2600. Thirty-six years, and a large number of games for medium, they have had to pass to be able to truly introduce ourselves into Marvel superheroes, because remember that just 2 years ago, Rocksteady Studios already did it with DC's Batman. The difference between that game and this lies in the playable approach. It can be said that, if Batman VR was a more story-focused experience, this Marvel Powers United VR, created by Oculus Studios and Sanzaru Games, focuses almost entirely on the cooperative multiplayer aspect, leaving the story aside..
A short story between good and evil
The story that Marvel Powers United VR proposes this game to us and quite simple and simple: Thanos have brought together a kind of Masters of Evil, and after smashing a Cosmic Cube, he gives each villain a piece of the cube. Our main mission is to collect the 25 fragments and face each other in a final battle against Thanos. In this aspect, they could have taken more care and created a more elaborate and interesting plot to travel, even more considering all the stories and baggage that superheroes have in comics.
In order to achieve the different pieces of the Cosmic Cube it will be necessary to finish the different missions that will be sent to us and confront some of the villains and henchmen of Thanos:
- Loki.Ultron.Magneto.Ronan the Accuser.Monica Rappaccini, the supreme scientist.Viper (Madame Hydra).Dormammu.Venom.
Some graphics to match
Marvel Powers United VR has some great graphics, sometimes even at the height of Lone Echo. With a 6 GB GTX 1060 it is possible to configure the graphics in medium / high level and the resolution to take it up to 120. It is possible to use automatic resolution but its performance is somewhat erratic at times and a manual and controlled value is better.
If you look closely, there are many things in which the study has put special care.
The stages have a fairly good level of detail and lighting, removing a couple of textures, although at the moment of truth, the frenetic rhythm of the game does not allow us to fully focus on what surrounds us. These scenarios are rather intermediate in size and do not have a size that encourages us to get lost or explore, nor is it the intention of the developers, the scenarios have the right measure to move and kill the enemies that come to us in each surge.
On the other hand, the Marvel characters are represented with a lot of details and some really good modeling, being able to appreciate both the suit texture they carry and the muscles or veins of the arms and hands. Just take a close look at the included screenshots to realize it.
Sound and language
The sound in Marvel Powers United VR is well laid out and features a host of well-defined effects for each of the powers and weapons we are used to seeing and hearing on the big and small screen. On the other hand, the music has the same epic tone that can be found in the Avengers movies and helps create a good atmosphere.
The voices of each and every one of the characters is faithfully reflected, some more funny, others rougher, some more solemn, etc. The big downside is the absence of dubbing into Spanish, even adding subtitles would have been helpful for Hispanic players who are not fluent in English. Obviously, it is possible to get to play without being an expert in the language of Cervantes, but Oculus should start to value the translation of their games as a pending subject.
Movements and abilities
Before launch, there were questions as to how they would faithfully translate the movements of so many characters into the game. The final result has been quite correct and even true to many characters, with some other inconvenience. Let's first review the different movements available:
- Grab and throw, shoot, hit, cut. Most of the characters by default appear without any weapon in their hands, therefore, the first action to be carried out in each one of them is to move the hand to the back or to the waist to take an available weapon and then shoot, launch, hit or cut depending on the weapon we have. It can even be a different one in each hand. Captain America will take his shield , Black Widow his canes or pistols , Deadpool his swords, pistols or ninja stars; thor his hammer and hulk… well hulk won't take anything. In general, most actions are fairly well represented and their use responds according to what is expected of them, except for the throwing of objects. Many of the times we launch something at a visible enemy, the object automatically targets itself toward that enemy. I suppose that for a video game it is the most successful option if you do not want to hit the average player, but they should have chosen to place an option to activate or deactivate this targeted car. In other situations, on the contrary, instead of automatically launching the object at an enemy, it flies erratically to any other unexpected place. Movement. From the beginning the game shows you that the standard mode of locomotion is free movement using the joystick in the direction you are looking, to avoid dizziness, and in the same way, it is possible to use free spin. In my particular case, with this movement I did not have any type of dizziness or problem, I just missed running. The other type of optional movement is teleportation, you indicate where you want to move and each hero will perform the movement according to their way of being. Some will run, others will fly, etc. Sometimes, to upload or download sites, this will be the mandatory movement. It is possible to use an extra comfort option that adds black vignetting at the periphery of vision.
- Secondary ability. Aside from the main action to shoot, cut, or throw, each hero has a more powerful secondary ability. In most cases, in order to trigger it, in addition to pressing the indicated buttons, you will also have to make a movement with your arms. With wolf cub, it will be necessary to cross the claws and throw the arms forward; with Captain America pretending to hit the ground, etc. Special ability. When we reach a certain number of points, we can press the X button to perform a special action that will cause a great impact in combat. In the case of Thor, for example, he will use the power of the gods to increase his annihilating capacity.
It should be noted, the implementation of all these movements in the Oculus Touch, which are quite well resolved and respond to a thousand wonders.
Gameplay in Marvel Powers United VR
The game is basically a shooter for up to 4 players online in waves. This means that we will first choose a superhero among the 18 available: Captain America, Wolverine, Thor, Hulk, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Deadpool, Star-Lord, Hawkeye, Rocket Raccoon, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Storm, Gamora, Crystal, the Black Widow, the Iceman and Black Lightning. It is rare not to find Ironman among them.
Once a superhero is selected, we can start looking for people for a game, which is the main game mode, this search takes a few minutes but today it is not difficult to find players, the difficult thing is to find Spanish-speaking players. In the case of having friends who own the game, we can also send them an invitation to join us.
Finally, if we can't find people or friends, we can play alone with the help of three AI-controlled characters.
The prevailing trend is usually to take us to one of the several available scenarios and perform the task of defending a target while waves and waves of enemies appear. On other occasions it will also be necessary to collect some energy cells randomly distributed around the stage and place them on a target to defend. Although defeating waves of enemies one by one until the end of the game is fun at first, the main problem is that the difficulty and AI offered by these enemies is quite low, however many they are. This, added to the fact that the variety of low-level enemies does not usually modify their behavior much, causes a large part of the games to be spent by pressing the same button of our favorite attack. The only thing that frees us from them is the final score of each game, which will reward us if we get combos by varying our attacks.
It is during these games that some of the game's villains will occasionally appear. They are the ones who will drop the fragments of the Cosmic Cube by defeating them. These mini bosses, despite representing in the first instance a greater challenge than normal enemies, are also no big deal. His main asset is absorbing blows, and it is only a matter of patience and not standing still defeating them sooner or later.
At the end of each round, the stats and scores for each character in the game will be displayed. These statistics will also value some mini objectives that each character will have and which are based on fulfilling certain requirements such as killing X enemies in a certain time or using a specific ability. Depending on the score obtained, we will be rewarded with loot boxes. These boxes can be opened later in the reward room and win new costumes, poses and accessories related to Marvel's Lore. A curious reward, but one that is far from being an addition that attracts replayability, beyond the final battle.
As a culmination of the game, the participants of the game will gather for a final group photo, it can offer funny moments but it is incomprehensible that later that same photo is not saved anywhere.
Complementing the main game mode, we find the prologue, which we will be able to play with both Captain America and the Black Widow, and which will help us to get to know some of the mechanics and abilities of the characters. As we play, we can also unlock some short stories for each character but end up knowing little.
In the main menu, in addition to being able to access a game or the prologue, we can also change superheroes, see the specific abilities of each of them and take a look at the mini-objectives to be achieved by each of them. Conclusion and final words of Marvel Powers United VR
The first Virtual Reality game with a large number of superheroes available, you could almost say that it is the Avengers: Infinity War version but transferred to VR video game. However, where the film knew how to come out more or less successful when telling a story in which everyone was involved is where Marvel Powers United VR has failed the most. Everyone hoped to play a superhero but also live one of their stories.
In Marvel Powers United VR, superheroes are the excuse to create a cooperative multiplayer where you can eliminate everything that moves, and it is a very good idea to keep the kids in the house hooked for hours. When it comes to adults, we were looking for a little more depth.
The most praiseworthy is the initial surprise of the middle game, especially if you are a fan of any or all of the Marvel superheroes, being able to change your character, test your skills and annihilate some enemies along the way, the graphics help that immersion for his good work and how solid everything looks. Unfortunately, a game in waves does not give fun for many hours after the initial surprise, as if you are a hardened collector, you can continue playing to get all the rewards to unlock.
In conclusion, Oculus achieves a game with a fairly good technical invoice but with little initial ideas and themes, perhaps it is the preamble to something better. What do you think of the Marvel Powers United VR game ? Do you think it's worth it? We want to know your opinion!
