Marvell announces ssd clients with support for pcie gen 4
Table of contents:
The company Marvell announces that its next storage services will be on SSDs with support for PCIe Gen4 . The transition to this new technology was to be expected and coincides with the upgrade to the company's new line of services.
About a year ago, the American company announced the transition of its memories to NVMe type. This change has not yet been reflected, so we understand that it will be coupled with the current PCIe 4 update.
Marvell
The new family of controllers that they have presented are intended more for OEM SSDs than for the user market. This is because lately they have lost a lot of ground against the competition like Silicon Motion or Phison .
Regarding its new products, Marvell there are two important changes:
- They will bet that the most common NVMe clients work with only 4 NAND channels instead of 8 . They will invest in some DRAM- free SSD models as a service of interest.
These two changes will allow SSDs to shrink to 22x30mm , making them much more popular by offering great performance and capacities of up to 2TB . It should be mentioned that this will be possible as long as they use support for NVMe and QLC NAND client memories .
The product line will have 3 different models: DRAM-free controllers with 2 or 4 PCIe Gen 4 lines or a controller with DRAM and 4 PCIe Gen 4 lines . It would remain something such that:
In sequential read and write, the improvement is quite noticeable, but in random read and write they have lost some performance . Considering that they are now 4-channel controllers compared to the previous 8 channels , we have to give them credit.
In addition, the company boasts of having the most efficient PCIe Gen 4 SSDs on the market, since they perform at less than 2W with an active PCIe 4 × 4 link. This has been possible because Marvell now manufactures its component structures in 12nm instead of the previous 28nm.
Although they have stated that this is a complex and advanced manufacturing process, they say that prices will remain quite affordable even in their DRAM- free configurations.
This new generation of controllers are considerably more efficient and faster than their predecessors, but, nevertheless, their architectures are quite similar.
If you are interested in learning more, Marvell is currently preparing his new drivers and will show them next week at the Flash Memory Summit.
