Mediatek and intel join forces to create 5g laptops
Table of contents:
The company today announced a partnership with Taiwan-based semiconductor company MediaTek for the "development, certification and support of 5G modem solutions" for notebook computers.
The first Intel / MediaTek 5G laptops will arrive in 2021
The program is expected to deliver its first products in 2021. Intel will create the specifications and MediaTek will manufacture the modems, which Intel will validate and promote among OEM partners.
That release date means Qualcomm is more likely to be the first with 5G laptops. At the Computex conference in May, they showed the Project Limitless laptop in collaboration with Lenovo. The PC featured a Snapdragon x55 5G modem in combination with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8cx processor.
Additionally, Intel and Mediatek are working with Fibocom on the development of M.2 modules designed to work with Intel client platforms. MediaTek is also launching its Dimensional line of 5G on Chip (SoCs) today.

5G networks promise to revolutionize telecommunications in the coming years. This type of connectivity allows speeds of up to 10 gigabits per second (Gbps) or 10, 000 Mbps. Today's 4G / LTE networks reach 1, 000 Mpps. But it's not just about speed, it's also about latency in communications. 5G networks only have a latency of 1ms, compared to a latency of 200 ms for 4G.
Apparently, this will be an intense race between Intel, MediaTek and Qualcomm to meet the needs of 5G connections of laptop manufacturers. Knowing that the first products are projected for the year 2021, it is possible that the rise of 5G networks will occur in that year. We will keep you informed.
