Wd and sandisk join forces to create innovative hybrid solid state drives
WD ®, a company of Western Digital (NASDAQ: WDC), the global market leader in connected living storage solutions, and SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ: SNDK), the global leader in flash memory storage solutions, today announced their Collaboration to Introduce Hybrid Storage Devices Featuring SanDisk's Best Flash Memory Technology and WD's Best Hard Drive Technology.
SanDisk provides its SanDisk iSSD ™ storage device for the WD Black ™ Solid State Hybrid Disk (SSHD), the world's thinnest 2.5 SSHD solution, utilizing both WD's proprietary hybrid technology and standard SATA IO industry. The SanDisk iSSD drive brings a great combination of performance, low power consumption, cost, reliability and a compact format to this SSHD drive, which will offer large storage capacity to satisfy the growing appetite of consumers for digital content, as well as speed. flash, data transmission and responsiveness, all in an ultra-slim format.
"I am delighted that SanDisk is teaming up with WD on these innovative new hybrid products, " says Kevin Conley, senior VP and general manager of client storage solutions at SanDisk. “By combining SanDisk's vast experience in flash memory and hard disk technology with WD's know-how, we have succeeded in making the SSD WD Black drive provide excellent hard disk capacity, and the slim form factor and performance level that can only be achieved with flash memory solutions. ”
"By working with SanDisk, WD has been able to deliver on our vision for products that combine the best of both technologies, " said Matt Rutledge, VP of Customer Computing at WD. "WD's SSHD drives are a major achievement in the ongoing SSHD / flash storage revolution."
About WD Black Solid State Hybrid Drives
WD Black SSHD drives use WD's hybrid technology that combines SanDisk's smart flash memory technology with WD's high-capacity hard drives. This powerful combination enhances the PC user experience, allowing both high capacity and a higher level of performance than traditional hard drives, with increased speed, instant start-up and faster application launch.
Device size is logically a key concern for PC manufacturers who want to design thinner devices, so WD Black SSHD drives are designed to be integrated into the thinnest notebooks on the market. The 5mm WD Black SSHD offers 500GB of capacity, using almost 50% less size than standard portable hard drives (which are approximately 9.5mm). The slim size of the hybrid solid state drive is complemented by the extremely small form factor of the SanDisk iSSD, which is built on 19 nanometer (nm) processing technology, the world's smallest and most advanced semiconductor manufacturing process. WD Black SSHD 5mm drives are being marketed through OEMs. WD also markets ultra-thin 7mm and 9.5mm SSHD drives for portable devices.
