During the last years we have seen the arrival on the market of many RAM memory modules with a heatsink, to the point that it is increasingly difficult to find memories without a heatsink, but is a heatsink really necessary in RAM memories? We will analyze it in this article.

Is a heatsink needed in RAM?

RAM is one of the components of a PC that consumes the least energy, if not the least. Low power consumption is associated with low heat output, so RAM is expected to get very little hot during operation. It is interesting to see that after 11 minutes of operation, the temperature has barely reached 35ºC, which reinforces the idea that RAM is very little heated.

However, we do not know at what frequency this memory is working, so it is possible that in the case of high-speed modules, they heat up slightly more. So why does almost all RAM come with a heatsink?

To answer this question, you have to understand that aesthetics is increasingly important, and heatsink memories are much more pleasing to the eye. It is also important to note that the heatsink will prevent us from touching the electronic components with our hands when handling the modules, thus greatly reducing the danger of damaging them by static discharge. Last but not least, we are in the era of RGB lights, and these diodes have to be mounted somewhere in the memories, logically the heatsink is the ideal place to do it.

The key is in the price premium, if you can get the same memories without a heatsink for a significantly lower price, it is surely a good idea to save yourself those euros, but if the difference is very small, it may not be worth it.
