MGCOOL Explorer is a low-cost action camera that comes to offer users an alternative with good image quality and a tremendously competitive price. This camera mounts a 16-megapixel Sony CMOS IMX179 sensor alongside an Allwinner 179 V3 processor to be able to record video at 1080p and even 2K although with some limitations. In case it seems little, it also offers us a 2-inch TFT screen and a casing that makes it very resistant and waterproof.

First of all, we thank MGCOOL for the trust placed in ceding the product to us for analysis.

Technical characteristics MGCOOL Explorer

Unboxing and design

MGCOOL Explorer is presented in a completely black cardboard box and with a very compact design, on the top of the box we find the brand's logo in gold. Once we open the box, we first find the camera itself, which already comes inside its plastic casing and is very well accommodated by a piece of very dense foam of excellent quality, the objective is to make it not move during the transport and the manufacturer has more than succeeded.

We take out the camera and see a second department in which all the accessories are included, which are still several pieces to mount the camera in places as varied as a bicycle, a helmet and even fix it in our car to be able to record the routes. Each of these accessories comes very well protected in an individual plastic bag.

After the initial presentation, it is time to look at the camera, as we have mentioned before, it comes standard in its protective case, a case that is made of transparent plastic and will serve to protect the camera and prevent it from being damaged during use. This case is IP68 certified so we can immerse the camera a maximum of 30 meters without being damaged, ideal for lovers of water sports.

We can see that the housing includes four buttons so that we can use the camera functions without problems. The button on the front is used to turn the camera on and off as well as toggle between its different modes for video, photos, playback gallery and the options menu. The upper button is used to start / pause recording and take pictures. Finally, the two side buttons are used to navigate between the options, mute the microphone and access the camera's WiFi mode.

To remove the camera from the housing we only have to open it from the top, on the black plastic piece there is a tab that must be slid to the right and with this we can open it without any effort.

Once we have removed the camera from the housing we will see its characteristics in more detail. First of all we see its silver front on which the lens is and of course the power button that corresponds to the front button of the case. At the top we see the fire button and a small power indicator LED that turns blue when the camera is on.

On the left side we see the microUSB port to recharge its battery and the microSD memory card slot, the camera does not have any internal memory so we are going to need a memory card on a mandatory basis. On the right side we see the buttons for navigation and WiFi mode. Finally at the bottom there is a cover to access the removable battery.

MGCOOL Explorer works with a removable battery with a capacity of 1050 mAh, an amount of energy that is very good and that offers us approximately 80 minutes of autonomy recording video at 1080p resolution. Its recharge time is about 2 hours, which is usually average for a product like this.

A very noteworthy aspect of the MGCOOL Explorer is that it offers us WiFi so that we can explore the contents of the memory card in a very simple way from our computer, with this we will not have the need to remove the card from the camera. To access the WiFi mode we only have to press the bottom button on the side, with this it will already be in standby mode and we can already search for it from our computer.

We leave you some photos of the different modes and menus of the camera:

Once we have seen the characteristics of the MGCOOL Explorer, the moment we were all waiting for, check its recording quality and what better way to do it than take the bike for a walk and record the route.

Final words and conclusion about MGCOOL Explorer

It is time to make a final assessment of the MGCOOL Explorer, without a doubt it is one of the best options when it comes to getting an action camera for a very low price, it is a camera that includes all the parts of necessary assembly and the casing so that we will not have to buy anything else separately unless we want a very specific use. Its waterproof casing makes it highly recommended to take to the beach or the pool and more places where water is a threat.

The MGCOOL Explorer offers us the possibility of recording video at 720p and 120 FPS, 1080p and 60 FPS, 2.7K and 20 FPS and even 1800p and 15 FPS. The most recommended is to use the mode at 1080p and 60 FPS because it offers the best balance between image quality and fluidity. As we can see in the video, the recording quality is quite fair, however we can not ask for pears to the elm since we are facing a camera with a price lower than 28 dollars in the main Chinese online stores.

Finally we highlight the inclusion of WiFi connectivity that will make the process of viewing the contents of the memory card from our PC very comfortable.
