Micron begins production of 16gb class 1z ddr4 memory
Table of contents:
Micron announced that it has started serial production of its 16 Gb DDR4 RAM modules using the 1z process node, which is currently the smallest process node in the industry. Micron is the first DRAM company to manufacture 16Gb class 1z DDR4 RAM products, and believes this will enable it to offer "high-value solutions in a wide range of applications for the end customer."
Micron begins production of 16Gb class 1z DDR4 memory
The 1z 16Gb DDR4 process node offers much higher bit density along with a slight performance boost and lower cost compared to the previous generation of 1Y process nodes. The new node also enables a 40% reduction in power consumption compared to previous generations of 8 Gb DDR4 RAM modules.
The new process node offers greater flexibility for new DDR4 products to be used in a wide range of applications, including artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, 5G, mobile devices, graphics, games, network infrastructure, and servers. However, Micron seems to prioritize data center customers who are always looking for higher performance, power consumption, and lower cost.

Micron also announced that it had started volume shipments of DRAM 4X (LPDDR4X) with dual monolithic low-power 16Gb data rate and the industry's highest capacity in UFS-based multichip packets (uMCP4). The 1z nm LPDDR4X and uMCP4 products are primarily targeted at smartphone companies looking for better battery life and smaller components to put on their devices.
Samsung, Micron's main competitor in the DRAM market, announced last spring that it would begin production of 1Gnm, 8Gb DDR4 modules in the second half of this year, in preparation for the launch of the next generation of memory products. DDR5, LPDDR5 and GDDR6.
