With the Windows 10 1903 release, Microsoft has added a new button in the graphics settings for Variable Refresh Rate (VRR). Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) is similar to NVIDIA's G-SYNC and VESA DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync.

This new option of Windows 10 operating system is only to increase these experiences and not to replace them. We should continue to use G-SYNC / Adaptive-Sync normally. This button does not override any of the settings that we have configured in the G-SYNC or Adaptive-Sync control panels. The new button enables VRR support for DX11 full-screen games that did not natively support VRR, so these games can now take advantage of VRR hardware.

The slider will not be seen unless the system has all of the following installed. If any of them are missing, the option will not be visible in the system and the function will not be enabled. Namely:

  • Windows Version 1903 or later A monitor compatible with G-SYNC or Adaptive-Sync A GPU with WDDM 2.6 or higher drivers, compatible with G-SYNC / Adaptive-Sync and this new feature of the operating system.

This feature is disabled by default. If you run into any unexpected issues while playing, disable the feature and see if that solves the problem for you.

Windows 10 1903 belongs to the latest May 2019 Update, which should be available to all users of the operating system through Windows Update.
