Microsoft is putting a lot of effort into its Edge browser, which is intended to replace Internet Explorer and be a real alternative to Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.

Microsoft Edge increases its share but is still far from Chrome

The latest market share figures provided by NetMarketShare for the month of January 2017 reveal that Microsoft Edge is still a long way from rival Google Chrome, despite its growth compared to the previous month.

Edge managed to increase its share in desktop computers from 5.33% to 5.4%, a growth that was probably the result of the boost given by Windows 10 during these months.

Compared to Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge is not a threat. Chrome is present in 57.94% of computers worldwide, in December that figure was 56.43%. This obviously makes Google's product a browser par excellence in computers, a far cry from its rivals.

Currently Internet Explorer has 19.71% of the share on computers, it is the second most used browser in the world at the moment, probably because it comes pre-installed in any version of Windows. In third place is the beloved Mozilla Firefox with 11.77% of the share.

Surely a large part of Internet Explorer users are slowly moving to Microsoft Edge, but the growth it is having is too low to think that it will be a rival to Google Chrome in the immediate future. Is it worth it to put so much effort into Microsoft Edge or is it impossible to compete against Chrome and Firefox? It is a question that will be answered over time.
