The most daring Microsoft laptop is here, a fusion between notebook and tablet with Windows operating system that we can disassemble and combine as we see fit. This is the Microsoft Surface Pro 7, are you curious? Keep reading.

Technical characteristics of Microsoft Surface Pro 7

Unboxing of Microsoft Surface Pro 7

The packaging for Microsoft Surface Pro 7 arrives in a matte-finish white box with the name of the Surface series in the upper left corner. The only additional representative element is an image of the screen itself resting on its folding support.

At the base we find an extensive amount of information as well as a sticker with the model, serial number and components of Microsoft Surface Pro 7, which can vary according to its price range.

For this review we have not only the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 screen, but also a Surface Pro Signature Type keyboard and Microsoft Surface pen. Additionally, we will dedicate an exclusive review to the Microsoft Surface Arc mouse, which we leave aside here to give priority to the trackpad.

The contents of the box are summarized in:

  • Microsoft Surface Pro 7 Cable with Surface Dial connector and charging transformer Cable with power connection

Microsoft Surface Pro 7 design

The Microsoft Surface Pro 7 is a convertible laptop model designed to be as customizable as possible by the user. It is for this reason that we can acquire each of the components of Surface separately and we also have a range of finishes and colors from which to choose:

  • Screen: can be purchased in Platinum or Black Color Keyboard: available in Poppy Red, Ice Blue and Charcoal Pencil: we find it in Poppy Red, Cobalt Blue, Black and Mouse Platinum : we can choose between Poppy Red, Ice Blue

Finishes

In the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 a combination of materials is observable both by elements and by surface, so we are going to analyze them by parts. We mainly have plastic and glass on the screen and an alcantara lining for the keyboard.

The coverage for the sides and back of the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 is in matte black plastic with a slightly pearly hue. Its dimensions are 292 mm x 201 mm x 8.5 mm and it reaches a weight of 790 grams.

The rear part also has two hinges, one at each end, which allows a rotation of about 145º. This mechanism is solid and has a mobility that requires a little force, so when we rest the screen on a surface we will not notice that the hinge gives way under its weight and opens more than necessary.

When lifting this section, the lower plastic cover is visible, in which we see the screen-printed Microsoft logo accompanied by two stickers with serial numbers. In the reverse design there is a double height due to the fact that the edges of the folding flap have an additional thickness.

screen

Above the screen, it has a total of 12.3 inches and the active area remains surrounded by a black frame of around 15mm. Personally, we are not very in favor of conserving these margins, especially when we are currently seeking to minimize them as much as possible. On the other hand, if we use the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 as a tablet, perhaps we would miss these areas of tactile inactivity to be able to hold the screen comfortably, so that in this sense, Microsoft's decision is understandable even if it does not convince us.

Continuing with the observation of the reverse, the inclination of the mobile section allows the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 to be raised and to stand on its own in a horizontal position. It is also here where we find the Microsoft logo with a shiny finish with a change of material, being here reflective.

It is at the base where we appreciate the analog connection for the Surface Pro Signature Type Cover keyboard, with which we go from having a tablet to a fully functional laptop. This is carried out through six pins and is magnetized like the keyboard, thus facilitating its connection.

By combining both parts, the screen is kept vertical thanks to the rear mobile flap, with which we can adjust the inclination of the screen according to our needs. In this position we can see that the integrated speakers are located on both sides of the screen in its upper half, with some slight absent glass slots and covered with black aluminum mesh. Also in the upper margin of the screen we see both the camera and two microphones integrated in the glass.

Ports, buttons and connections

In the upper area we have two buttons, one for volume and the other for on and off. These stand out slightly above the back design and feature the same material and finish color as the rest of the cover. For its part on the left side there is only a 3.5 mixed jack for headphones with a microphone and on the right we have a USB type C and another type A port in addition to the Surface Dial connection for both the charger and Microsof devices that we acquire separately. Finally, we also have a micro SDXC card reader.

Keyboard

The Surface Pro Signature Type Cover is not just a keyboard, but also a protective cover when we close the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 and move from side to side. The material chosen to cover the entire structure is alcantara, a synthetic textile material with a touch similar to suede. Definitely in use it has been more pleasant than simple plastic or aluminum since it transmits a warmer thermal sensation, although being a fiber we can probably expect it to catch some dirt over time. The advantage is that being synthetic we should be able to clean it easily.

Integrated into an area with depression with respect to the surface of the piece we have the keyboard. This unevenness prevents the screen from directly impacting the keys when closed, although the height of the keys stands out above its base, achieving homogeneity with respect to the support that we can feel when we pass our hand over them.

It is a 60% keyboard with membrane switches with a separation of about three millimeters from each other. The Caps Lock key features a dedicated white LED for when it is active, and the entire keyboard as a whole offers backlighting to your characters, which feature fine, delicate typeface.

The use of the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 allows the keyboard to be placed both completely flat on the work surface and with an elevation of about 10º, which allows for a more optimal keyboard ergonomics. We cannot say that the difference is decisive but we definitely prefer the second option. The edges of the keyboard have a slight downward bevel, more flexible, which avoids a straight edge on which to rest our wrists when working.

As it could not be otherwise, at the closing the presence of the Surface Pro Signature Type Cover passes for being a totally conventional tablet lining. In it we can see the area of the back with the difference in section that works as a support to facilitate the two optional heights in its use on the table.

If we turn it around we see that the point of union with the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 is made on the back and the connection area of the pins is covered by a piece of plastic lined in alcantara with a slightly greater thickness in which they hide The magnets.

It is also on the reverse side where we find the only sign that the keyboard belongs to Microsoft, with the brand's logo screen-printed on one of the sides.

Among the keyboard models, Carbon Black is the only one that is made of polyurethane instead of Alcantara.

Trackpad

We continue our review of the Surface Pro Signature Type Cover by moving on to commenting on the trackpad. This is a complement that those who are not looking for a convertible tablet for which not only acquire a keyboard but also a mouse will greatly appreciate it. Due to the dimensions of the screen at the base of the keyboard there is more than enough space in which to integrate a trackpad, and they have done so. This is the same plastic material used in the buttons and does not have different left and right clicks, although we can notice them when clicking on it.

Surface pencil

Another additional complement that we can see is the Surface Pencil, a pen that works with an AAAA battery and we can buy it separately. Like all the other components we can choose the color of it and we appreciate that the materials chosen for its manufacture combine plastic and aluminum. Its connectivity is Bluetooth 4.0

The central body of the pen has a finish that tries to be matte, reducing the contrast between the two materials. In the entire pencil we recognize only two buttons: one in the central body and the other in the traditional eraser.

The length and thickness of this pen does not differ from that of a conventional pencil. It weighs only 20 grams and its connection to Microsoft Surface Pro 7 is made via Bluetooth 4.0. In the upper plastic area, which we can rotate to replace the battery when it is exhausted, a small LED is integrated that will respond with a light pattern when we make the pairing or the Surface Pen is low on battery.

The mine that we find in the pen is removable by the very tip of the pen without the need to open it, although we have missed the presence of at least one replacement inside the Surface Pencil case. Fortunately the length and thickness of it is standard, so we can purchase more both on the Official Microsoft Website and from other providers.

Internal Microsoft Surface Pro 7 hardware

The Microsoft Surface Pro 7 is not a computer made to open, so this time we do not bring you photos with the internal carnage that we usually do with the components. However, here we will tell you what is on the table.

CPU and GPU

From the hand of CPU-Z we find that the processor integrated in the present Microsoft Surface 7 model has a tenth generation Intel Core 7, specifically the 1065G7 at 1.30GHz. It is a four-core, eight-wire model with a 10-nanometer lithograph. This model is already well known to us since it is the one chosen by high-end computers, so we are familiar with the benefits it offers.

The GPU for its part is integrated and is also the well-known Intel Iris Plus Graphics model, which works with a base memory at 1800MHz. It uses a 11th generation architecture (11.0) and supports DirectX 12.0, having capacity for 512 shadow units, 32 texture mapping units and 8 ROPs.

Disk and RAM storage

For the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 we have 16 GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 250 GB of storage in the SSD. Both SSD and RAM are soldered to the motherboard, so those of you who have wondered if you could expand the present specifications regret to tell you that it is impossible. However, within the range Microsoft offers three variants with different components and capabilities, so you can choose the one that best suits your needs.

Refrigeration system

Dissipation in the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 is accomplished through two copper heatpipes that come into direct contact with the processor surface using thermal paste. With a topical use of the computer we will not notice significant temperature changes or sound, but if we use slightly more demanding editing programs or games we will be able to hear the sound of the heat sinks.

Putting Microsoft Surface Pro 7 into use

The Microsoft Surface Pro 7 is a “walk-around” computer, a portable and transformable model that is designed to minimize its weight and maintain great versatility. The essential thing to manage with it is to acquire a screen and keyboard as a pack from any Microsoft dealer, since the advantage of this product is that all the accessories can be purchased individually if something breaks out of warranty and we can buy a substitute.

We can not say the same of the computer itself, since if our RAM or SSD fail we will need to completely replace the motherboard (to which they are soldered) and this can be an expense that is not worth it for many users or a while. long in case of processing the guarantee with Microsoft. Although we have been informed by acquaintances and they tell us that Microsoft has one of the best after-sales services in Spain.

Screen qualities

The screen of Microsoft Surface Pro 7 has a resolution of 2736 x 1824 px and consists of a panel with Pixel Sense technology. For those who do not know the peculiarities of this screen, we summarize it in four points:

  1. First of all we have a Corning Gorilla Glass. Next is the LCD panel itself with an array of integrated optical sensors. Right behind, a lattice of optical films distribute the light throughout the panel. Finally, a panel with white and infrared LEDs.

Basically, Pixel Sense technology detects objects or pulsations on the touch surface using infrared sensors integrated in the panel, while an optical sensor present in each pixel allows to detect with greater precision the tactile sensitivity (pressure) of the same.

This technology gives us few nuances if we use the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 only with our fingers when it is in tablet mode or to touch something on screen on time. Where it really stands out is with the combined use of the Surface Pen.

Continuing with other aspects, the image distortion on the screen is almost non - existent obliquely, the color retains its hue correctly and only loses intensity at closer angles. The maximum brightness of the screen is quite intense and does not reduce the saturation of colors. Its readability in environments with intense natural light remains acceptable and broadly speaking everything responds as expected.

Optimal calibration and performance

We can not talk about screen and color without considering the state of gamma, color temperature and contrast present by default in the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 panel. For this we use two programs that for our habitual readers are two old acquaintances: DisplayCAL and HCFR. Both are accompanied by an analog colorimeter with which we have made the measurements. First of all we start with HCFR and do a standard parameter measurement before proceeding to calibrate the panel:

Default levels

Levels after calibration with colorimeter

  • Light response: the brightness (in yellow) present by default in Microsoft Surface Pro 7 describes a significantly higher curve than the standard (light blue) which can lead us to perceive a color saturation lower than the real one. Gamma: While the midpoint is in this category within a 2.2 percentage, here we note that this number is down on the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 with 1.3. Grayscale: Remains at a midpoint of 5 points although it tends to be uneven depending on the amount of saturation. Color temperature: the average ideal index is at 6500K, which Microsoft Surface Pro 7 does not reach, staying with about 6300K. It is not an ideal number, but neither is it a serious color alteration.

Regarding the RGB color, we see that green is the most outstanding of the three, with red and blue almost on par. These last two do not reach the white midpoint while the first exceeds it, so we confirm the presence of a slight color imbalance.

Seeing the above we enter to discuss the calibration process, and it is that in the results we can see profile percentages slightly lower than those found in other high-end notebooks. Adobe RGB is covered at 62%, while DCI P3 is less than 65%. The best stop is sRGB touching 90% coverage.

The conclusions that we can obtain from these results is that perhaps this screen is not the best option to carry out activities related to the editorial environment since the plausibility of the color that we obtain is improvable in a professional monitor. However, this is the only environment in which we show reluctance to use it since, as a general rule, we consider it acceptable for everything else.

The post-calibration data allows us to delve more specifically into the parameters of the Microsoft Surface Pro 7. Its contrast is 1291: 1, which is above the recommended minimum (1000: 1). The brightness is 412.6 cd / m², which is also a correct number. The average white point is at 6600K, which is somewhat above the ideal but it is not excessive either, we will simply see the colors with a little more clarity. Finally, the percentage of ΔE is maintained at values below 1, which are excellent results.

Regarding the uniformity of color on the screen, we see that in general it is correct except for the upper left third, in which there is a noticeable mismatch that, however, is not visible to the naked eye.

Surface pen in use

The Surface Pen has a correct answer. Its perception on the screen is present up to one centimeter away and the most interesting thing about it is that the functions of its two integrated buttons can change depending on the program in use, especially those for editing such as Photoshop or Illustrator.

Obviously we cannot expect from it the same calibration that we usually have with a graphics tablet and its configuration software, but it certainly allows us to get out of trouble and even make simple illustrations with total comfort.

Integrated camera, microphones and speakers

In the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 we find two independent cameras, one rear and one front. It is for this reason that we are going to approach this section commenting on them separately. On video recording, in both cases this is in 1080p at 30fps and with an aspect ratio of 16: 9. Additionally, next to the front camera we have two far-field microphones, while behind we have only one.

  • Front camera: It has facial recognition, HD Ready, timer and allows you to adjust the white balance, brightness, motion blur and ISO. Its maximum resolution is 4.4MP with an aspect ratio of 3: 2 (2560 × 1706). Rear camera: Same initial characteristics, only the maximum resolution increases to 8.0MP at 4: 3 (3264: 2176).

Regarding the general quality, it should be borne in mind that in none of the cases the number of megapixels is particularly high and the cameras do not have auto focus. The expected results are therefore not out of the ordinary, falling below the capacity of smartphones in the current market.

Microsoft Surface Pro 7 performance tests

The section with the most relevance for many users is here, and that is that the performance tests are generally those that give us a better idea of the capacity and ideal use that we can expect from the Microsoft Surface Pro 7. For this we use:

  • Crystal Disk Mark CineBench R15 CineBench R20 3DMark

CPU and GPU performance

Cinebench leaves something that we already expected and only needed a confirmation with numbers: this convertible is not for gaming. The integrated graphics is not designed to withstand large particle loads or to animate and render graphics, nor to edit videos in an advanced way.

Fire Strike and Time Spy, stress tests within 3DMark confirm this, although we must clarify that this does not mean that you can play launches with less graphic load, such as mobile or tablet games and even emulator arcade games. Just because the results for the highest performance are low does not mean that it is useless.

SSD storage performance

Going to analyze the speed of reading and writing to disk, here we can tell you that the results on average are quite good. We have a maximum reading of 2315.26 MB / s and writing of 1593.02 MB / s, which are numbers with which we usually manage in the high range and do not bring any surprises.

Battery and autonomy

We come here to one of the most important aspects of a laptop, and that is that autonomy is a detail that we must always pay attention to when buying. The Microsoft Surface Pro 7 has a battery of 5, 702 mAh, 7.57 V and a consumption of 43.2 Wh. On the official Microsoft website it is indicated that its maximum autonomy reaches ten and a half hours, although this is nuanced.

Indeed, in Energy Saving mode and with a low brightness we can expect about 10 hours of undemanding use of the laptop (listening to music, surfing the Internet, writing and editing documents…). With Recommended we can work for about six hours approximately, while with High Performance using programs such as Photoshop, InDesign or Illustrator the average falls in approximately four hours.

On the charger, here we have an additional USB Type-C port in which to charge a second device, a detail present in the entire Surface range and which is highly appreciated.

As a negative aspect, we must note before closing this section that the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 battery is fixed to the rear case, so its replacement tends to be somewhat difficult, especially if we consider that it is necessary to remove the plate. base to access it.

Temperatures

Here we have an eminently positive aspect given that the average temperatures reached by Microsoft Surface Pro 7 tend to remain quite low. At work, with browsing activities and the use of programs such as the Office package, we have a great 33-36º, an amount that rises to around 65º with more demanding tasks such as working in Photoshop with heavy files. As you can imagine, from 45-50º we will be able to hear the activity of the fans slightly and a slight warm-up in the rear area of the Microsoft Surface Pro 7, although it is not alarming.

Wireless connectivity

Apart from Bluetooth 5.0, the capacity of Wi-Fi 6 compatible with 802.11x is good after having tested it on a network with 100MB contract.

Final words and conclusions about Microsoft Surface Pro 7

To describe the experience with Microsoft Surface Pro 7 we are left with: flexibility. The concept of Microsoft to bring to the public a 2-in-1 laptop model in which we can combine each of its parts with several models within the same range is undoubtedly a successful bet. As an addition to the variety of color we also have the possibility of buying a different keyboard in case of any incident outside the warranty period.

Unfortunately the same cannot be said about the question of expanding or replacing components of the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 itself, in which both RAM and SSD are soldered to the motherboard and would require a complete part replacement. Access to the battery is also somewhat complicated and it is attached to the back cover of the screen, which does not make things easy either.

We recommend reading: Best laptops on the market.

However, not everything is going to be negative. The keyboard with Alcantara coating has convinced us since the touch is quite soft and pleasant, the backlighting of the keys is not adjustable (although it dims in periods of inactivity) and typing requires very little travel and little pressure. The alternative of positioning it completely parallel to the table or with an elevation of 10º (our favorite) has seemed a success, and the magnet system to connect to the screen is the icing on the cake.

On the screen itself, the resolution is undoubtedly a standard within the high range, although the color coverage has seemed somewhat lower than expected. The brightness is adequate and the sound quality does not work miracles but it is competent to be a convertible tablet. The camera does not stand out, but it is correct and meets the basic needs of the user.

We can buy the Microsoft Suface Pro 7 from € 809.10 to € 2, 249.10, although the model that we have brought you is € 1, 409.90. The good side is that the available range covers a fairly wide budget range, so we can buy a Surface with very varied benefits.
