Motorola Moto G (2014)

The presentation is quite basic with a white box and orange tones. On the cover we have an image of the smartphone and on both sides the technical characteristics. The bundle is made up of:

  • Motorola Moto G 2014 smartphone.Instruction manual.USB cable.

The design changes a bit from the first model. It is completely made of plastic and as a novelty it has a 5-inch IPS screen with 720 x 1280 pixels resolution and Gorilla Glass 3 technology with 390 nits of brightness. Another difference is the incorporation of a double microphone to record in stereo and a symmetrical double speaker that does not help us identify the smartphone when we want to grab it, Motorola personally could have chosen to incorporate some detail to identify it. Currently both black and white versions can be purchased at any shopping center. On its sides we find 3.5 jack input, power button and volume. While the back is removable and has a rubbery touch.

Accompanied by a mid-range Qualcomm MSM8226 Snapdragon 400 1.2GHz quad- core processor and an Adreno 305 graphics card (GPU) that will be enough to play almost any game on the market. It incorporates 1GB of RAM, which will probably be scarce in the near future for a terminal of this range. The internal memory we have two versions with 8 GB or 16GB as standard (depending on model) which is finally expandable up to 32GB via microSD.

In connectivity it has the most common bands at national and European level in both 2G and 3G with Dual SIM. Gentlemen of Motorola… Where is 4G?

  • 2G: 850/900/1800/1900 Mhz. 3G: 850/1700/1900/2100 MHz

It is completed by Bluetooth 4.0 connection, FM Radio and Wifi 802.11 AC.

The battery section has remained completely the same with 2070 mAh. I thought that increasing the screen size would also increase the battery capacity. The truth is that in our tests it took us quite a while to stay up until night… and we always stayed at 12 to 20%, so we cannot reach a day and a half like in other terminals in the same mid-range. Be careful, the battery is not removable.

Android Lollipop operating system

With Motorola and its union with Google we guarantee to have the latest as an Android operating system. It has the maximum with native Lollipop 5, without customization and that benefits us from all its benefits and debugging.

Games

Camera

We have an 8MP level camera with improved processing and sensor. Which is appreciated, since the first-generation Motorola Moto G was its weakest point… As an interesting fact, it allows us to capture with HDR quality and a basic application to capture our photos. As I have already mentioned on some occasions, this application should improve and evolve with effects, small tweaks and allows you to do a little more.

Our experience with photography has been very good with light, where it has suffered most at night… but it is evident that in a medium range we cannot ask for much more.

Motorola Applications

We find five essential Motorola applications. We highlight the app First Alert is Alter that allows us to configure emergency or predefined messages to a family member. Another highlight is Assist that allows us to configure do not disturb profiles when we are at home, driving or during working hours.

WE RECOMMEND YOU Comparison: Doogee Voyager DG 300 vs Samsung Galaxy S4

Finally, I would like to highlight Migration, which as its name indicates, makes backup copies of our most important data: photos, messages, videos to another device or cloud.

Final words and conclusion

After a month of use with the Motorola Moto G 2014 the experience has been more than satisfactory. A smartphone with a 5-inch screen, a 4-core processor, 1 GB of RAM, 8GB of internal memory, an 8-megapixel camera and native support for Android are currently the most relevant features. As extras, comment that it only accepts 2G and 3G connections, supports Dual SIM cards and microSD card expansion up to 64GB.

One of the great improvements compared to the first version is the 8 megapixel camera, which during the day takes very good pictures and by installing an application like camera 360 we can get a lot out of it. While the front camera we have 2 megapixels that will fulfill its function of "quick self-photo".

Possibly one of its most negative points is that the battery has not grown as the screen has. We have a total of 2070 mAh, somewhat scarce for the 5-inch IPS… with intensive use like mine it has reached the night with 15 to 20%, if I gave it more power than normal I had to connect my powerbank so that it was not run out. Hopefully in the 2015 review improve these benefits.

Little will we tell you about the Android Lollipop operating system that you no longer know. Possibly it is the most refined system on the market in a mobile terminal with its small defects (total silence, it consumes more battery by a process that remains active…) that will be fixed in the next update. For the rest it goes like a shot, but that 1GB of RAM will soon be scarce.

It is currently found in any online store or physical store with a recommended price of € 175 for both its white and black versions.
