Again we are facing a new laptop with excellent features and a very slim design that we liked a lot. This time we have in our laboratory the MSI GS70 6QE which is mainly characterized by a very compact design, with a thickness of only 2.18 mm, in which it manages to integrate very powerful hardware that will allow us to carry out all our tasks with many ease and we can even play very demanding games with high levels of detail.
Technical Features MSI GS70 6QE
The list of components does not disappoint, in the case of the analyzed model we have an i7-6700HQ, 16 GB of RAM, an Nvidia GTX 970M graphics card, Killer Double Shot Pro wireless network card, backlit steelseries keyboard, an SSD hard drive 256GB with 1TB HDD for data and 4 speakers plus Dynaudio subwoofer.
Unboxing MSI GS70 6QE
The laptop arrives in a large cardboard box with a predominantly gray color. This specific model does not include any accessories apart from the equipment itself, the documentation, a drivers CD and its 150W power supply. You really don't need any extras to stand out either. The laptop comes in a cloth bag to avoid scratches, in line with other MSI models:
MSI GS70 6QE: Design
The MSI GS70 6QE, a fairly large model with 17.3 inches and a FullHD resolution, is a very suitable IPS screen to replace a monitor in movies and games. It is an ideal team if you are not going to move too much but we want performance and comfort.
The laptop is well designed, it is a very fine model for everything inside with a thickness of just 2.1 cm, which demonstrates the great work that the people of MSI have done with this unit in the rear, but in exchange for the outputs air are generous and the number of ports very generous with two USB 3.1 Type-A, two USB3.0, two miniDP and an HDMI 1.4, along with the typical card reader and network port, all spread on both sides while the back shows a very clean design.
The lower part exhibits all of it in black and we can see various grids through which the cooling system takes the necessary air to dissipate all the heat generated during its operation.
We look at the keyboard and we are in front of a high quality membrane unit, the touch and the path of the keys is very pleasant so it will be quite comfortable to use. Includes an attractive high quality LED lighting system signed by Steelseries. Just below is the usual trackpad so that we can use the equipment without the need for a mouse.
Above the keyboard we find the audio output, the 4 + 1 speakers are made by Nahimic Dynaudio to achieve remarkable sound quality for what is common in notebooks.
Hardware and performance
As for the processor we find an i7 6700HQ, with 4 cores and 8 threads based on the Skylake architecture at a frequency of 2.6 GHz and a turbo frequency of 3.5 GHz with a TDP of 45W. It also includes the Intel HD 530 GPU with tremendous energy efficiency and power to spare for most tasks.
The suffix -HQ means that it is a socket FCBGA 1440 processor, which indicates that it is soldered to the board and not on the socket, a decision that unfortunately prevents us from changing it for a higher model. The processor shows a sublime performance and in Cinebench R15 it is placed above desktop processors as powerful as the Core i5 6600K.
In RAM memory they have opted for a 16 GB kit in dual channel, a very generous amount to go over several years and nothing out of the ordinary in these ranges. They are DDR4L (1.2V) modules as required by Skylake for greater energy efficiency and superb performance.
The laptop is very agile in terms of startup and use, with just twelve seconds between pressing the button and reaching the desktop, and it is not for less, since MSI has chosen to mount a 256GB NVMe disk achieving very high performance. high.
The data hard drive is a 1TB, 7200rpm mechanical drive. No surprise in this part, it is a capable and spacious disk to store our data. The performance is quite remarkable, without of course reaching the heights of an SSD.
WE RECOMMEND YOU MSI launches its new ProBox130The graphics section is quite remarkable with the presence of an Nvidia GeForce GTX 970M graphics card with a total of 1, 280 CUDA Cores accompanied by 3 GB of GDDR5 memory with a 192-bit interface and a bandwidth of 120 GB / s. With this configuration we will be able to play titles as demanding as Crysis 3 at a maximum level of detail and above 30 FPS, something very commendable if we consider that we are dealing with a laptop with a thickness of only about 2 cm.
Despite having very powerful hardware, the laptop shows great energy efficiency thanks to the Nvidia Optimus system that is responsible for switching between the dedicated Nvidia graphics card and the graphics processor integrated in the CPU as needed. We have a standby consumption of only 25W and under load only reaches 101W, excellent figures by all accounts and that have allowed MSI to create the GS70 as a very compact yet powerful laptop.
Final words and conclusion
The MSI GS70 6QE is an all-terrain notebook, as it brings everything you need in a 17-inch notebook with the latest generation Intel processor. Among its positive points, you have very compact dimensions and a slight thickness. We liked its mechanical keyboard, its speaker system and its RGB keyboard system.
Regarding its performance, it has met all expectations: games and work. Only we miss a better use of the space of the upper keyboard area and sometimes it is somewhat noisy under load (something more normal with these components).
It is already available in online stores for a price of 1850 euros, giving its characteristics is a great purchase.
