We finally have one of the first RTX Max-Q graphics cards among us. Specifically, the MSI GS75 STEALTH 8SG with i7-8750H processor, RTX 2080 Max-Q graphics card, 32 GB of RAM, 17 inches with IPS panel and a 1 TB Super Raid. A team that removes hiccups!

But is it really worth those 3400 euros ? Will it pass all of our tests with outstanding? All this and much more, in our analysis.

First of all, we thank MSI for the trust placed in ceding the product to us for analysis.

Unboxing and design

MSI GS75 STEALTH 8SG comes inside a black box, inside we will find the laptop very well protected and accompanied by the power supply in a different department.

This model is within the GS series, which is characterized by offering incredible performance with a super careful design. To make a quick summary, the bundle is made up of:

  • MSI GS75 STEALTH 8SG Portable 230W Slim Power Supply and Power Cord Instruction Manual

The MSI GS75 STEALTH 8SG notebook follows the design pattern of the GS65 and GS63. Where a black base color and gold finishes stand out. All the metallic equipment and its high quality aluminum upper part offer incredible sensations to the touch. It has measurements of 396.1 x 259.5 x 18.95 mm and a weight of 2.25 Kg. These dimensions are extremely good, considering that it is a 17-inch laptop.

As expected MSI incorporates in this model a 17.3-inch panel in a size typical of a 15.6-inch model. To make it possible, we have chosen to minimize the bezels of the screen as much as possible, so that the use of the front surface is maximum and gains a lot at the design level.

The screen mounts an IPS-Level panel, which really is an improved AMVA, this means that we lack ghosting and thus make the most of our experience while we play. It has a Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels), 144 Hz and a very low response time.

We liked that MSI has managed to keep the HD (720p) webcam on top so as not to harm the user experience, since it is very common to find the webcam in the lower area, offering a lousy experience.

As standard, the True Color application incorporates us, thanks to which you can choose between various profiles to adjust it to the maximum of your needs. For example we have the classic blue light filter, a gaming mode, a cinema mode, an office mode, a night mode and the maximum color fidelity mode.

Regarding the lateral connections, we find two USB 3.1 type C Gen.2 connections, both being Thunderbolt to achieve 40 Gbps of transfer and charging at 3A or 5V, two USB 3.1 type A Gen.2 connections, one HDMI 2.0 port., a kensington blocker.

A Gigabit LAN connection (RJ45), a power input, an SD card reader and audio input / output.

The Ethernet port is managed by a Killer E2500 Gigabit Ethernet controller, although it also offers us WiFi 802.11ac 2 × 2 through the Killer 1550i controller and the Bluetooth 5 connection. Both network controllers are of the best quality, and can prioritize game-related packages to reduce latency and improve bandwidth, thanks to which you will have a clear advantage in your online games.

As usual at MSI, trust the manufacturer SteelSeries to do a good job of mounting your membrane keyboard. Although I don't particularly like it as much as the MSI GS63 or MSI GS65. The main reason, that the journey is slower and does not engage in writing as fast as its brothers. We also like the addition of the SteelSeries Engine app to adjust color profiles and macros. Good job!

The touchpad is enhanced with a full restyling. Now it is much wider, improving the experience, the touch is brutal and the sensations are perfect. It is true, that at the level of gestures the Macs are at another level, but the one that incorporates the MSI GS75 STEALTH 8SG plays in the “champions” of laptops.

The MSI GS75 STEALTH 8SG is powered by Intel Coffee Lake mobile processors. It is one of the most powerful i7s on the market and has a total of 6 cores and 12 threads at a speed of 2.2 GHz, which is capable of reaching 4.1 GHz in turbo mode, a real bonus for speed-demanding games and applications. It is accompanied by 32 GB of DDR4 2666 RAM in dual channel, reaching the maximum capacity allowed by this generation in laptops. Regarding storage, it comes standard with a 1TB RAID 0 NVMe, enough to have a very portable high-performance equipment.

We come to the great novelty of this laptop. MSI has decided to launch it now by launching Nvidia RTX graphics cards for laptops. As we have already anticipated we have a 70% performance consuming only a part. Among the characteristics of the RTX 2080 Max-Q we find 2944 CUDA Cores, 37 RTX-OPS (vs. 53 on desktop), a 735 MHz frequency that goes up to 1095 MHz with CUDA Cores, 8 GB GDDR6 and an interface 256 bit. All this in a low TDP of 80 W.

The battery is only 4 cells and has a capacity of 51 Wh, but it ensures about 8 hours of autonomy taking care of resources. We are barely on time if we use the equipment 100% while playing. Fully understandable, for the components it incorporates.

It is very powerful hardware, which has been possible thanks to the MSI Cooler Boost Trinity + cooling system, it is based on thick copper heatpipes, four air vents and two fans that will keep our processor and graphics card as cool as possible. We can manage and monitor the entire laptop using the Dragon Center 2.0 software.

Its two 2W speakers offer very good quality sound, which is what the manufacturer's gaming notebooks have accustomed us to. MSI has again opted for Dynaudio's advanced Giant Speakers, which have a larger resonance chamber than rivals, offering a much richer and cleaner sound. The sound is enhanced by the Nahimic 3 application, which has a military origin and offers us a very faithful virtual 7.1 sound, thanks to which the enemies will have nowhere to hide on the battlefield. It also offers us a very crystalline sound for the microphone, so that we can communicate with our comrades in a very simple way. MSI has also included a HiFi ESS Saber DAC that offers 24-bit and 128KHz sound, a quality superior to that of CDs.

Performance and storage tests

First, let's look at the RAID 0 speed of the NVMe SSDs. To measure its performance we have used CrystalDiskMark. The read and write rates are great.

As for the processor, we have used Cinebench R15, which has given a really impressive score for a laptop with 1, 116 points. And our classic benchmarks.

We now turn to see the behavior of the MSI GS75 STEALTH 8SG team in the most demanding games, all of which have been executed with the graphics at maximum and in 1080p resolution . The tests have been done with the FRAPS benchmarking tool for 180 seconds, it has been repeated three times and an average has been done.

Final words and conclusion about MSI GS75 STEALTH 8SG

The MSI GS75 STEALTH 8SG laptop hits the market by breaking molds: 17 inches, a super compact size, weighing in at just 2.25kg, outstanding performance with the new RTX 2080 Max-Q and i7-8750H, 32GB memory RAM and a 1 TB NVMe RAID 0. Spectacular!

We see a restyling on its screen, since it incorporates very small bezels and an IPS-Level panel without Ghosting. Thanks to its 144 Hz and Full HD resolution, we finally have the possibility of playing + 60 FPS in Full HD with RTX. Games like BFV we can make the most of it, although we hope that soon we will see more possible titles to test.

We recommend reading What MSI laptop to buy from me?

As expected, in our gaming and benchmark tests we have had spectacular performance. This is all due to the great work MSI has done with its cooling and software management.

As a possible improvement we believe that the keyboard is not the same as that of its brothers GS63 and GS65. We like much more the touch, routes and sensations in long writing. We do not want to say that this is bad, which is quite good, but having the other version

The disgust comes when we see its price marked in stores. Its spectacular price of 3, 398 euros, throws us back a little. By specifications it is spectacular, but perhaps we miss a 4K screen to round out its features. Also, very good work by the MSI team.
