MSI continues to launch new models of notebooks with Nvidia PASCAL graphics cards (the first to reach the same level as the desktop) and this time we are pleased to introduce you to the MSI GT73VR with i7-6820HQ processor, 32GB of DDR4 RAM, a RAID of M.2 disks and 4K screen.

It looks good, right? Keep reading our review and you will know everything you need to know about this brown beast.

Once again we thank MSI for the trust placed in the transfer of the product for its analysis:

Technical Features MSI GT73VR

Unboxing and design

The laptop arrives in a large cardboard box and on its cover we can see a picture of the laptop in full color.

While in the rear area we find all the most important technical characteristics and its new technologies, including its compatibility with the HTC Vive virtual glasses and the incorporation of the GTX 1070 Pascal graphics card.

Once we open and extract all the accessories we find the following bundle:

  • MSI GT73VR gamer laptop .Instruction manual and quick guide. Power supply and cable.

The MSI GT73VR is a fairly large model, at 17.3 inches and Ultra HD (4K) resolution: 3840 x 1440 pixels . The screen is made of a 16: 9 TN (LCD) panel that improves response time and speed in games. It incorporates the AntiGlare technology that improves the angles and brightness that often fail to design these screens.

The laptop is well designed and is a somewhat thick model, something logical for everything inside with a thickness of just 4.9 cm. The first sensations are fantastic and we thought it was going to be quite heavy, but its 3.9 kg makes us quite light compared to such a well-cooled equipment.

Among its connections we find a Mini DisplayPort output, an HDMI output, an audio input and output, 5 USB 3.0 connections, a USB 3.1 type-C connection and an RJ45 connection.

The bottom of the laptop imposes, since we find several grids that allow the cooling system to take the necessary air to dissipate all the heat generated during its operation. Later we will see the interior of the laptop and the good work done by the MSI R&D team.

We look at the keyboard and we are in front of a high quality membrane unit signed by the great company Steelseries. Both the touch and the path of the keys is quite pleasant so it will be quite comfortable to use, it is more we get used to it very quickly while we are testing it for 7 days.

As a good high-end gaming notebook, it incorporates an RGB0 LED lighting system. What does this mean? Basically configure the keyboard with different lighting options and a 16.8 million color scale.

Above the keyboard we find the audio output, the 4 + 1 speakers are made by Nahimic Dynaudio to achieve remarkable sound quality for what is common in notebooks.

As for the processor we find an i7 6820HQ socket FCBGA 1440 socket , with 4 cores and 8 threads based on the Skylake architecture at a frequency of 2.7GHz and a turbo frequency of 3.6 GHz with a TDP of 45W that this can lower up to 35W.

In RAM they have opted for a 16 GB kit in dual channel, a very generous amount to go over several years and nothing out of the ordinary in these ranges. They are DDR4L (1.2V) modules as Skylake requires for greater energy efficiency and superb performance.

About storage MSI has opted for two M2 drives in RAID to achieve higher write and read frequencies of 1000 MB / s. To complement a fast system we also need a good storage system, this time with a 1 TB data hard drive and a speed of 7200 rpm. We see that it is a configuration with a head and that it will be great for design, work and games.

The graphics section is quite remarkable with the presence of an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 graphics card with a total of 2048 CUDA Cores accompanied by 8 GB of GDDR5 memory with a 256-bit interface and a bandwidth of 256 GB / s. With these specifications we can play any game (the processor is equivalent in itself to an i5-6600K) in Ultra and without messing with the attached resolution. As we already mentioned with the MSI GT72VR perfectly moves any current game of virtual reality glasses, whether it is called: HTC Vive or Oculus Rift. Another thing that we liked the most is the incorporation of G-Sync that allows the sudden drops of FPS to be noticed much milder, drastically improving the user experience.

What better way to see the laptop, than good images of it working and the quality of the screen at its different viewing angles.

Test of performance

MSI Dragon Center allows us to personalize, monitor, take control from your smartphone with various applications. The first contact with her has been quite good and we have seen a good evolution with respect to previous generations.

WE RECOMMEND YOU MSI announces the #YesWeBuild campaign

Between tests we have passed normal 3DMARk Fire Strike, its Ultra 4K version and Unigine Heaven. The magnificent results, at the level of a desktop computer.

We have also been able to verify that the read and write rates of the Crystal Disk Mark of the M2 SATA SSD that it incorporates complies with what is established by the manufacturer: 3.1 GB / s and 1.3 GB / s.

And here the performance tests with several very demanding titles and the most played of the moment.

The results regarding the GT72VR is really similar but with the advantage that this team allows us to play 4K but it really falls short to move the games at +40 FPS. So we see it as the perfect ally to work and play in full hd.

The temperatures at rest are magnificent thanks to its excellent refrigeration, when we put a lot of cane it reaches up to 81ºC the graphics card, quite contained temperatures as it is a Gamer laptop and that we recommend for its quality of construction.

Final words and conclusion about MSI GT73VR

The MSI GT73VR becomes one of the best laptops on the market thanks to its excellent technical features: next-gen i7, GTX 1070 Pascal, 32GB DDR4, SSD in Raid 0 and great 4K resolution.

In our tests we have seen that in 1080 resolution it is superfluous but in our internal tests at 4K it is quite fair, since it is recommended to mount a GTX 1080 for these purposes. In short, it is the ideal companion for working in 4K, playing with the HTC Vive virtual glasses and playing 1080p (even 1440p) with ultra filters without any problem.

The price of the laptop is almost 3, 000 euros depending on its variant. We believe that it becomes one of the best options at this price and we recommend its acquisition if you are looking for power and quality in a mobile system.
