We thank MSI Spain for trusting the product for its analysis:

MSI GTX 1080 Ti Gaming X technical characteristics

Design and unboxing

If you have seen previous reviews of our MSI Gaming series. As usual, they present us with a red background and a large image of the graphics card.

While in the rear area we have all the specifications and technical characteristics of the product.

Once we open the box we find a CD with the drivers / software, a quick guide and some stickers to give a different touch to our computer.

The MSI GTX 1080 Ti Gaming X graphics card uses the new graphics architecture Nvidia Pascal, specifically it is the GP102 that It is manufactured in 16nm FinFET and features a very compact die size of just 314mm2.

It is complemented by a total of 224 texturing units (TMUs) and 88 crawling units (ROPs). The MSI GTX 1080 Ti Gaming X works on three different profiles, all of which benefit from Turbo Boost 3.0. Here we detail it:

  • Overclock mode: 1683 MHz / 1569 MHz / 11124 MHz. Gaming mode: 1657 MHz / 1544 MHz / 11016 MHz. Silent mode: 1582 MHz / 1480 MHz / 11016 MHz.

It is also important to know that they incorporate the GDDR5X enhanced memories. These run at a frequency of 11010 MHz and a 352 bit bus. Obviously we can tighten them a little more and get a slight% performance.

The graphics card has dimensions of 290 x 140 x 51 mm and a weight of 1257 grams. The MSI GTX 1080 Ti Gaming X also comes equipped with the new TWIN FROZR VI heatsink, which is a 0dB cooling system that will keep the processor, power phases and memories cool. The heatsink is accompanied by several black aluminum sheets that cool all the components, and of course it has the recent MSI TORX 2.0 fans that offer 22% more pressure on the entire aluminum surface.

Note that this is a 2.5D design, this means that it will occupy 2 slots but the heatsink will also occupy half of the third. Obviously it has two fans that are activated when 60ºC are reached, and they stop once the same temperature is reduced. It is a delight to see its performance and cooling capacity.

Only the lototype of the upper zone (the dragon) counts on RGB lighting. The front of the card only lights up red. Honestly, I think it is right for the red / black design that it incorporates.

It incorporates two 8-pin power connections. MSI recommends the minimum use of a 600W power supply, we recommend that you have at least a quality 600W, if you do not know, I recommend our guide to the best PSUs on the market.

Finally we show you the rear connections made up of:

  • 1 DVI connection. 2 Displayport connections. 2 HDMI connections.

PCB and internal components

To remove the TWIN FROZR VI heatsink is very simple. It is as simple as removing the 4 main screws (the one with the warranty seal) and 5 screws that take the rest of the block (supply phases). We find a heatsink with 5 8mm heatpipes and several thermalpads in charge of correctly cooling the entire system. The outer shell is plastic and you have already seen it in previous images.

The MSI GTX 1080 Ti Gaming X features a top-notch PCB and 10 power phases. To keep as many memories as the main components, it has a small black painted aluminum frame, which improves all the cooling of the system. Is the design top notch?

All components are signed by MSI Military Class 4 technology. For those who do not know, these are improved components: Hi-C CAPs, Super Ferrite Chokes and Japanese capacitors that improve durability and withstand overclocking much better. What makes it a unique graphics card of its kind.

For benchmarks we will use the following titles:

  • 3DMark Fire Strike normal.3DMark Fire Strike 4K version.Heaven Superposition.

All tests have been passed with the filters to the maximum unless we indicate otherwise. In order to have adequate performance, we have carried out three types of tests: the first is the most common at Full HD 1920 x 1080, the second resolution is making the leap to 2K or 1440P (2560 x 1440P) gamers and the most enthusiastic with 4K (3840 x 2160). The operating system we have used has been Windows 10 Pro 64 bit and the latest drivers available from the Nvidia website.

What are we looking for in the tests?

First, the best possible image quality. The most important value for us is the average FPS (Frames per second), the higher the number of FPS the more fluid the game will go. To differentiate the quality a bit, we leave you a table to assess the quality in FPS, but we will also have the minimum Fps in the tests that were thus possible:

FRAMES BY SECONDS

Frames for Seconds. (FPS)

Gameplay

Less than 30 FPS Limited
30 - 40 FPS Playable
40 - 60 FPS Good
Greater than 60 FPS Fairly Good or Excellent

Synthetic benchmarks

This time, we've narrowed it down to three tests as we consider them to be more than enough as synthetic performance tests.

Game Testing

We have decided to make the leap to checking various games manually. The reason? Very simple, we want to give a much more realistic vision and cover tests with current games. Since we make an effort, it is consistent with the level of the website and that of our readers.

Overclock and first impressions

Note: Remember that overclocking or manipulation carries a risk, we and any manufacturer are not responsible for improper use, use the head and always do so at your own risk.

We have increased overclocking capacity by +60 MHz in the core to the MSI GTX 1060, leaving a maximum of 2.05 GHz and the memories at +400. The rise is quite slight since we have barely reached an exact 2055 MHz which is where they are all arriving. What is the improvement? After our tests just 1-2 FPS so it is not a brutal improvement either. As it comes standard it is more than enough to work with any game to the fullest.

Temperature and consumption

The temperatures of the MSI GTX 1080 Ti GAMING X have been quite remarkable. At rest we have obtained 48ºC since the fans are in passive mode until some game is activated and the temperature rises. While playing we do not exceed 67 ºC in any case. As the overclock has been so mild, temperatures barely rise (72ºC).

Another of the great advantages of this range is the reduced consumption that we have in the equipment. Until very recently it was unthinkable to have high-end graphics and get 52W at rest and 380W playing with an Intel i7-6700K processor. While overclocked we reach 55 and 410 W respectively.

Final words and conclusion about MSI GTX 1080 Ti Gaming X

The MSI GTX 1080 Ti GAMING X is one of the best graphics cards we've tested this year. It features a cool design, two good fans, and great overclocking capabilities.

The use of the Military Class 4 components and the good Twin Frozr VI heatsink has allowed us to over 2055 MHz with overclocking. With hardly any temperature rise and gain a maximum of 3% performance. Although this percentage is very slight, in 4K resolutions and virtual reality they are always appreciated.

In our performance tests we have been able to perfectly play 4K: 3840 x 2160p and the experience is unbeatable. Where it takes enough advantage in sound and cooling to the reference model of Nvidia.

It is currently one of the cheapest GTX 1080 Ti and must be taken into account. It can be purchased for a price of 805 euros, of course… it is not cheap and it is not available to all audiences. But if you have a 4K monitor or television with HDR or a 2K 144 Hz monitor… it is a 100% recommended purchase.
