Msi gtx 1660 ti gaming x review in Spanish (analysis)

We finish the first batch of review on the Nvidia GTX 1660 Ti. For the past few days, we've been testing the new 6GB GDDR5 MSI GTX 1660 Ti Gaming X. Possibly one of the graphics cards reference in the market and that MSI has greatly adjusted its price at launch.

Is it worth buying a GTX 1660 Ti right now or is it better to invest a little more in an RTX 2060? During the analysis you can check the performance between the two and if it really compensates for its acquisition. Let's start!

As always, we thank MSI for the trust placed in the loan of the product for its analysis.

MSI GTX 1660 Ti Gaming X technical characteristics

Unboxing and design

As always, MSI offers us a package of 10. On the cover we see an image of the heatsink, the model that we have acquired in large and the main certifications that accompany this fantastic graphic.

On the back of the box we detail all the most important features and specifications of this GPU. We think it is a success, the new heatsink that has been integrated into this model. Although we will talk about this a little later.

It is time to open the box and see that we find the graphics card very well protected in foam rubber. The bundle consists of:

  • MSI GTX 1660 Ti Gaming X CD with Drivers and Software Manual

The MSI GTX 1660 Ti Gaming X is a standard size card. A super careful design predominates and combines very well the black / silver color seen in its front area. We are facing a graphics card with dimensions of 247 x 127 x 46 and a weight of 1, 511 kg. Without a doubt, a compact and very powerful card.

We really like that MSI opts for a cooling system that has done so well in recent years. The seventh version of Twin Frozr is already with us . Apart from a backplate that cools the rear area and gives firmness to the graphics card, we have a metallic piece with a thermalpad that cools the VRM and memories of the equipment.

It also has two fans signed by the MSI TORX 3.0 technology. These are kept at rest in maximum silence, since they are stopped. It only activates when they exceed 60 ºC at maximum load.

But thanks to its bearings it is very quiet while we play very long hard game sessions. Will it measure up in our tests? We will see a little later.

ZERO FROZR technology, first introduced in 2008 by MSI, stops fans completely when temperatures are relatively low, eliminating all fan noise when no cooling is needed.

View of the rear of the backplate. We would also like to highlight its MSI Mystic Light Sync lighting system looks really spectacular, thanks to the 16.8 million colors and its multiple light effects. We can also modify all the effects and color range through its application from Windows.

Finally, we detail the rear connections that this model incorporates:

  • 3 x DisplayPort 1.4a1 x HDMI

Interior and PCB

To open the graphics card, we just have to remove the four screws from the back. We can see that the aluminum radiator integrates three nickel-plated copper heatpipes.

MSI's custom PCB design provides everything this graphics card needs. We are surprised by the small size that this particular model offers, since it could be much more compact. It has a total of 4 power phases and Micron D9WCR memories that are responsible for offering us the 6 GB GDDR6 that Nvidia promises.

Both the welds and components chosen by MSI must be more than enough to support for many years the maximum performance of our needs. The good thing is that it allows us to get a little more "juice" out of it by overclocking it.

The MSI GTX 1660 Ti Gaming X is based on the TU116 graphics core, consisting of 1536 CUDA Cores, 96 TMUs, and 48 ROPs. Its base and turbo operating frequency is 1500 MHz / 1875 MHz respectively. To ensure the best performance, a single 8-pin connector has been integrated to supply power. Nvidia has lowered its TDP to 120 W.

For benchmarks we will use the following titles:

  • 3DMark Fire Strike normal. 3Mark Fire Strike 4K version. Time Spy.VRMARK.

All tests have been passed with the filters to the maximum unless we indicate otherwise. In order to have adequate performance, we have carried out three types of tests: the first is the most common at Full HD 1920 x 1080, the second resolution is making the leap for 2K or 1440P (2560 x 1440P) gamers and the most enthusiastic with 4K (3840 x 2160). The operating system we have used has been Windows 10 Pro 64 bit and the latest drivers available from the Nvidia website.

What are we looking for in the tests?

First, the best possible image quality. The most important value for us is the average FPS (Frames per second), the higher the number of FPS the more fluid the game will go. To differentiate the quality a bit, we leave you a table to assess the quality in FPS, but we will also have the minimum Fps in the tests that were thus possible:

FRAMES BY SECONDS

Frames for Seconds. (FPS)

Gameplay

Less than 30 FPS Limited
30 ~ 40 FPS Playable
40 ~ 60 FPS Good
Greater than 60 FPS Fairly Good or Excellent

Game Testing

We have decided to make the leap to checking various games manually. The reason? Very simple, we want to give a much more realistic vision and cover tests with current games. We've revamped the old 2016 Tomb Raider for this new Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

Overclocking

Note: Each graphics card can go up at different frequencies. Does it depend a little on how lucky you are?

At the overclocking level we have been able to give it a little boost in the memories (+1700 MHz) and in the core up to 1610 MHz. As standard it runs up to 1955 MHz, with this improvement we have reached ~ 2075 MHz. At benchmark level We see a great improvement, but what about Games? We have chosen Shadow Of the Tomb Raider to test the total gain in FPS.

Shadow Of The Tomb Raider - DX12 Stock @ Overclock
1920 x 1080 (Full HD) 91 FPS 102 FPS
2560 x 1440 (WQHD) 62 FPS 68 FPS
3840 x 2160 (4K) 32 FPS 38 FPS

Temperature and consumption

We have obtained 44ºC at rest because the fans are deactivated until they reach 60 degrees. Once the fans are started at full load, we obtain an average of 61 ºC. It maintains temperatures very well, so MSI is to be congratulated.

We passed him our high-end thermal camera and we found very good temperatures. As expected, the temperatures are great. It shows how well built the MSI GTX 1660 Ti Gaming X is.

Consumption is for the entire team *

The consumption of the equipment is 51W, which when we upload the work to the GPU, it goes up to 208 W. Although if we stress the processor, we get approximately 320 W. Very far from the consumption of the first GTX.

Final words and conclusion about MSI GTX 1660 Ti Gaming X

The MSI GTX 1660 Ti Gaming X offers everything we could ask of a graphics card: good components, excellent cooling, a compact size, a design that is very pleasing to the eye, great overclocking capacity and spectacular results in our tests.

We recommend you read the best graphics cards

We have managed to get the most out of a GTX 1660 Ti with MSI Gaming X. Obtaining a performance very similar to that of an RTX 2060. What a good card MSI has made!

Without a doubt we are facing one of the best quality / price graphics cards on the market. Its price of 335 euros seems to us a success and that both in terms of components and performance is the ideal purchase for mid-range equipment. What do you think about this MSI GTX 1660 Ti Gaming X?
