First of all, we thank MSI for the trust placed in us when transferring the product to us for analysis.

MSI MPG Z390 Gaming Pro Carbon technical features

Unboxing and design

Traditionally, the MSI color scheme has always been black and red, although we have recently seen a shift towards different styles and colors. MSI MPG Z390 Gaming Pro Carbon uses a blue and purple theme. The front of the box provides very little information other than the mention of the Z390 chipset, as well as the mystical MSI light and a pre-installed rear IO protector.

On the back of the box we find more details of its features and specifications in several languages.

Inside the box there are a large number of accessories included, all very well protected to avoid any type of damage during transport:

  • MSI User Guide Quick Installation Guide DVD Software / Driver 2 x SATA data cables 1 x MSI SLI HB Bridge M1 x Cable label tag sheet 2 x M.21 screws x MSI badge Various RGB extension cables

MSI MPG Z390 Gaming Pro Carbon uses Intel's latest Z390 chipset, which offers support for 8th generation Core CPUs as well as the new 9th generation, including the impressive Intel Core i9-9900K. We also see a pre-installed rear IO shield, a substantially improved VRM design for the CPU, support for SLI and CrossfireX, M.2 NVMe storage, and Audio Boost 4 sound output. The MPG nomenclature is derived from a design language that Look for a modern perspective and high performance for the best gaming experience.

Before continuing to talk about the benefits of this motherboard, we leave you a rear view of it. Surely the most curious users will value it a lot.

As is generally the case with the MSI Gaming Pro Carbon series, there is very little in terms of color, which focuses on the Carbon scheme of black, gray, and silver. This should coordinate with other components easily and help show any RGB lighting effect you can use. MSI's RGB Mystic Light illumination is equipped on the right rear edge of the motherboard as well as on the top left above the VRM heatsinks.

MSI MPG Z390 Gaming Pro Carbon is capable of up to 64GB of RAM at 4400MHz (OC) and in dual chanel configuration. Shielding surrounding DIMM slots helps reduce interference from surrounding components, increasing stability. Next to the DIMM slots are a pair of 4-pin PWM connections, one of which is specifically for water-cooling pumps. We also see a JRGB header as well as the JCORSAIR standard for Corsair specific lighting. The front of USB 3.1 and 3.0 is available to the left of the 24-pin ATX power connection.

Thanks to the Z390 chipset, the LGA1151 socket is capable of supporting next-generation Intel CPUs as well as current Intel Core 8th Gen CPUs. Around the CPU socket is a fully digital 10 + 1 + 1 phase power VRM, ensuring optimal operating conditions for the CPU, as well as providing the best possible power delivery for overclocking. To allow for cool, stable operation, there are a pair of separate heat sinks that help cool components and provide a stylish look.

Hidden behind the heat sinks is an 8-pin + 4-pin power connection for the CPU. This suggests that the motherboard is capable of supporting some higher power CPUs, perhaps with a TDP that exceeds the 100W mark.

The ATX motherboard measures 305mm x 244mm and contains a pair of M.2 connections, both supporting NVMe and SATA storage. The lower one is equipped with a heat sink attached to the Southbridge, helping to minimize thermal regulation of some of the hottest NVMe disk drives on the market.

At the top is the first M.2 connector, which supports the four common form factors: 22/42, 22/60, 22/80, and 22/110. The second M.2 connector is located below the large silver heat sink, labeled TURBO M.2 and supporting the same four form factors.

While we are seeing a gradual shift towards NVMe, SATA will continue to be around for years to come thanks to the price per gigabyte that hard drives can offer. This particular board offers a total of six SATA 3.0 ports, arranged at right angles from the board. These ports support RAID 0, RAID1, RAID 5 and RAID 10.

We found an EZ Debug LED tucked between the fan headers and the ATX power connection. This allows the user a quick and easy indication of any problems that may occur when starting the system. Sometimes something as simple as a bad RAM memory mount or GPU auxiliary power that is not connected can be the culprit, something these LEDs would help identify.

The reinforced DIMM and PCI-E slots help complete the robust feature set of this board, aiding longevity and stability by protecting these sensitive connections from interference. Located near the CPU socket is only a 4-pin PWM fan head. Looking at the motherboard from above, the complete set of PCI-E slots can be clearly seen. The functionality consists of the following:

  • 3x PCI-e 3.0 x16 slots (modes: 16, 8, 4) 4x PCI-e 3.0 x1 slots

AMD CrossfireX, Nvidia SLI and Nvidia NVLink are compatible with the MSI MPG Z390 Gaming Pro Carbon, allowing up to three AMD cards or a pair of NVIDIA. NVLink requires the purchase of a separate NVLink connector. Thanks to this there will be no problems to mount a very high performance system in the most demanding games.

The lower left corner of the board includes the sound system, and is isolated from the rest via a trace, preventing any unwanted interference to which the audio components are particularly susceptible. The Audio Boost 4 audio processor uses the Realtek ALC1220 codec, and passes the audio output through the audio caps which are tuned for warm sound. This system includes headphone amplification, and is compatible with Nahimic virtual positioning technology.

As for the network, it has a Gigabit Ethernet port with the Intel i219 Gigabit LAN controller, one of the best on the market in systems integrated on motherboards, and that will offer us a high-speed, low-latency gaming experience.

Remember that the rear IO protector is pre-installed, so it is obviously missing in this section. The MSI SLI Bridge included with the motherboard is compatible with GeForce 10 GPUs, although it is not compatible with the latest Turing GPUs, such as the RTX 2080 and RTX 2080Ti, which use the new NVLINK interconnect. Finally, the rear I / O panel includes:

  • 1x PS / 2 mouse / keyboard port 2x USB 3.0 1x DisplayPort 1x HDMI port 1x USB 3.1 Gen. 2 Type-A1x USB 3.1 Gen. 2 Type-C1x Intel I219-V Gigabit LAN2x USB 3.1 Audio input / output 5x 3.5mm (Rear Speaker / Center / Bass / Line In / Front Speaker / Microphone) 1x SPDIF

BIOS

The BIOS of the MSI MPG Z390 Gaming Pro Carbon we have already seen for many years. They maintain their AMIBIOS format and their design is very intuitive. Very simple options and a high level of monitoring.

To overclock is as simple as selecting 4 or 5 parameters, while if we want to create a profile, we will do it with the mouse in 5 clicks. Good job MSI! But we expect a facelift in future chipset, who is playing?

Overclocking and temperatures

The 1.32v processor in stock frequency, we think it is not the best brand in factory settings and MSI should give it a spin in future BIOS. It can't be that other models spin much finer with our 9900K. Now it's time to talk to you about overclocking! We have managed to raise our processor to 5 GHz with a voltage of 1.33v. Maybe it is not the best brand but we expected something worse.

It is time to tell you about the temperatures of the feeding phases. After 12 hours with the prime95 application in its long duration mode, we achieved results of 77 ºC with some peaks at 82 ºC. They are somewhat high temperatures… which of course with overclock will rise more. Be careful, this does not mean that we do not achieve stable 4.9 or 5 GHz, but it is a fact to keep in mind with more extreme overclocking.

Final words and conclusion about MSI MPG Z390 Gaming Pro Carbon

The MSI MPG Z390 Gaming Pro Carbon is a huge ATX motherboard. With its 10 + 2 power phases, a very sober design, a very good build quality and a remarkable cooling, MSI thus presents us with one of its flagships for gaming.

We recommend reading the best motherboards on the market

Its performance is very good with our i9-9900k and the Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti. We have been able to overclock at 5 GHz and play triple AAA games without saying goodbye in the main resolutions: FHD, 2K and 4K. It is a joy how well this trio of components goes.

Its store price ranges from 199.99 euros without Wi-Fi connection and 229.99 euros with it. We believe it is a great price for a product that offers us everything we need. It is not at the level of the MSI Z390 Godlike but it is not far behind in performance either. Good job MSI!
