The MSI Optix MAG 321CQR monitor offers us a 23.1-inch curved panel with VA (vertical alignment) technology, 1440p resolution, a 144Hz refresh rate and FreeSync. To all this is added the reduction of blur, and lighting effects thanks to its RGB LED lighting system in the rear to improve aesthetics.
We thank MSI for the trust they have given us.
MSI Optix MAG 321CQR technical characteristics
Unboxing and design
First of all we see the presentation of this MSI Optix MAG 321CQR monitor. MSI has opted for a fairly large cardboard box, as we are talking about a 31.5-inch panel. The box has a design with a very high quality print, with a predominance of black and red so characteristic of the brand. Once we open the box, we see a large cork frame that is in charge of protecting the monitor and all the accessories perfectly. In total the bundle includes the following:
- MSI Optix MAG321 CQR Monitor Adjustable Stand Two HDMI cables One DisplayPort cable Power supply Power cables Documentation
The MSI Optix MAG321 CQR base consists of two parts that we have to fit and tighten the included screw so that they are well joined. It is a very robust base that allows you to adjust the monitor in height and inclination. We miss the possibility of rotating the monitor in order to put it vertically, as well as being able to rotate it. Height settings vary by as little as 5 cm and you get a 15 ° back tilt and a 5 ° forward tilt.
After seeing the base we focus already on the MSI Optix MAG 321CQR, it is a monitor with a very solid construction, as we are used to seeing in the monitors of this manufacturer. MSI has used high quality plastic, which does not sink when pressed, a whole sample of good quality.
The MSI Optix MAG 321CQR requires a Phillips screwdriver for mounting. The base fits very easily, and you just have to fix it with four s screws. At the rear is a well-designed and intuitive joystick / button combo that controls all of the monitor's functions and has a solid feel for your movements. Also in the back is the RGB LED lighting system.
The resolution of the monitor is only 2560 x 1440 pixels, which together with its size of 31.5 inches gives us a fairly good pixel density, although not as much as a 4K panel. The 1440p resolution will make it possible to achieve high frame rates per second with a wide variety of video cards at reasonable prices, which is key, since we are talking about a FreeSync monitor with a refresh rate of 144 Hz and a response time 1 ms.
The contrast ratio is specified at 3000: 1 for extreme blacks, along with a 400cd / m2 backlight that allows for more refined brightness adjustment. This panel offers great image quality thanks to the properties of VA technology, with a DCI-P3 color coverage of 90% and sRGB of 115%. The contrast for the MSI Optix MAG 321CQR is extremely better than the typical 1000: 1 specification that we see on IPS and TN panels.
MSI has implemented support for AMD FreeSyn c technology , which means it does not include Nvidia's G-Sync. FreeSync is compatible in a range from 48Hz to 144Hz, fortunately, it has LFC to avoid problems if the FPS falls below the threshold. AMD FreeSync will offer us tearing and stutter free games, as long as we have an AMD Radeon HD 7000 or higher graphics card.
As for the connections, we find two HDMI 2.0 ports, a DisplayPort 1.2, two USB 3.0 ports and a USB 3.0 Type A port to connect it to the PC. It also includes a headphone jack, important since it does not have speakers.
OSD menu and MSI Gaming OSD software
The joystick on the MSI Optix MAG 321CQR allows one to easily scroll through menus and also toggles power and offers quick access to input selection and imaging modes. Pressing it once activates the entire OSD. We have options to adjust brightness, contrast, color, video input, profiles for game genres and much more. We leave you an image gallery with all the options that allows you to adjust the monitor.
As for the MSI Gaming OSD software, it is a very complete application and perfectly organized in different menus and windows. The application allows us to customize each of the monitor profiles, adjust the color, brightness, contrast and other values, it will be a piece of cake thanks to this software. We can also configure FreeSync technology if we have a compatible AMD Radeon graphics card. It also allows us to configure other MSI devices such as mice and keyboards, as well as change the monitor's input source.
MSI Optix MAG 321CQR is compatible with split screen modes, something that will be very useful for those users who need to work with several PCs at the same time, since they will be able to dedicate a section of the monitor to each of them. Finally, the Mystic Light module allows us to customize the lighting of the monitor, being an RGB system we have a color wheel and multiple light effects. We leave you a gallery with all the possibilities offered by this software.
Final words and conclusion about MSI Optix MAG 321 CQR
MSI Optix MAG 321CQR offers us a VA panel with exceptional quality, which allows us to enjoy the best colors together with viewing angles of 178º in both planes. This panel makes the games look really spectacular, playing Crash Bandicoot N'sane Trilogy in this panel is a delight. Another advantage of using a VA panel is that it has a response time of only 1 ms real, which means that it does not generate any ghosting, something very important in games with a lot of movement like Battlefield V.
Its resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels may seem little for a 31.5-inch panel, but the advantage of this is that it will be easier for us to enjoy its 144 Hz. Games like Overwatch, Doom and Battlefield V itself look really fluid, even more so with the AMD FreeSync booster that will avoid annoying tearing. In this type of games, fluidity is more important than resolution, so MSI has chosen to maintain a 1440p panel. With this it is clear that this MSI Optix MAG 321CQR offers us an excellent image quality at all levels, MSI has a lot of experience with the use of VA panels, and is one of the best manufacturers when it comes to working with them.
Aesthetics is another very important point today, in this the MSI Optix MAG 321CQR also meets with great note, with its advanced RGB lighting system and very thin bezels. The latter makes it an ideal monitor for multi-panel setups. The base is what we liked the least, since it does not allow us to rotate the monitor or put it vertically.
It is not yet for sale, so we do not know the price.
