MSI Optix MPG27CQ was one of the most popular gaming monitors at CES 2018 thanks to its sensational features, which join the good work of the brand. It is finally available to provide fantastic images and features for gaming enthusiasts. This monitor is the result of the collaboration between MSI and SteelSeries, which are leading brands in the gaming industry. We tell you all the characteristics and secrets of this beauty.

We thank MSI for the trust they have given us.

MSI Optix MPG27CQ technical features

Unboxing and design

First, we will analyze the presentation of this MSI Optix MPG27CQ monitor. MSI has opted for a very large cardboard box, which is logical since we are talking about a 27-inch panel. The box is incredibly colorful in design and based on a very high quality print. Once we open the box, the first thing we see is a large cork frame that is in charge of protecting the monitor and all the accessories perfectly. In total the bundle includes the following:

  • Monitor MSI Optix MPG27CQ Adjustable stand Two HDMI cables One DisplayPort cable Power supply Documentation

The base of this MSI Optix MPG27CQ consists of two parts, we just have to fit them and tighten the included screw to make them fit properly. This base is quite adjustable, since it allows to regulate the monitor in height, inclination and pivoting.

The MSI Optix MPG27CQ monitor sports a unique design with unique features that we have not seen before. The monitor comes with a metallic gray chassis with a subtle combination of red accents on the stand for a more aggressive touch. The combination of brushed and textured finishes gives the product its sophisticated feature, justifying its status as the brand's flagship gaming monitor.

In the back we find the anchor for the base, placing it is as easy as fitting the piece and applying slight pressure.

The connectivity of the MSI Optix MPG27CQ includes a DisplayPort 1.2 port along with two HDMI 2.0 ports and three USB 3.1 ports for accessories. There are no speakers, but we did find connectors for the headphones and the microphone.

The panel has almost no bezels, except for the bottom part that contains the RGB LED strips that we will talk about in detail later. This lighting system is not just for customizable decorative lighting as it includes the main feature of the monitor. LEDs respond to events and notifications in games through the SteelSeries GameSense app. To use the application we must connect the monitor to the PC using the attached USB cable.

Keep in mind that you must use a compatible application or game to take advantage of this add-on, some examples are Overwatch and Discord. Placing the LEDs on the MSI Optix MPG27CQ should not be a problem as the lighting effects are easy to notice. The LED function extends to the back of the monitor to act as a polarizing light apart from its primary purpose. On this side, you'll also find the MSI Dragon logo and OSD joystick for easy navigation between the setup menus.

This MSI Optix MPG27CQ monitor is based on a 27-inch curved VA panel with a resolution of 2560 x 1440, a refresh rate of 144Hz and a response time of 4ms to deliver great images and excellent gaming performance. The contrast ratio is specified at 3000: 1 for extreme blacks, along with a 400cd / m2 backlight that allows for more refined brightness adjustment.

The display's 1800R curve is slightly more aggressive than some options, providing a higher level of immersion. This panel offers excellent results thanks to the properties of VA technology, with an sRGB color coverage that reaches 100% or 85% of the Adobe RGB range. Color accuracy is great for a gaming monitor with a Delta E 1.8 average. The contrast for the MSI MPG27CQ is extremely better than the typical 1000: 1 specification that we see on the IPS and TN panels.

MSI has implemented support for AMD FreeSync technology , which means it does not include Nvidia G-Sync. FreeSync is compatible in a range from 48Hz to 144Hz, luckily you can trust LFC with this monitor if the FPS drop below the threshold. AMD FreeSync will offer us tearing and stutter free games, as long as we have an AMD Radeon graphics card.

OSD menu and SteelSeries GameSense application

To navigate the OSD menu we will use the joystic that includes the monitor, thanks to which it is incredibly comfortable to scroll through all the options. We have options to adjust brightness, contrast, color, video input, profiles for game genres and much more. We leave you an image gallery with all the options that allows you to adjust the monitor.

As for the SteelSeries GameSense application, it is a very complete tool thanks to which we will be able to manage in a very comfortable way all the LEDs included in the monitor, both on the front and on the back. Being an RGB system, we can choose between 16.8 million colors and various light effects, all of them spectacular.

Final words and conclusion about MSI Optix MPG27CQ

After several days using this incredible MSI Optix MPG27CQ monitor we can assure you that it does not disappoint at all. Its SteelSeries GameSense technology provides a bonus that we have not seen before, it may seem somewhat tribal and unimportant, but once you start playing compatible titles like Overwatch you realize the multiple possibilities it offers. You can set the lights to alert you when you have your ultimate ability ready to use, you can also have it alert you when your health is about to run out and much more, the possibilities are vast. The management software is very easy to use and allows you to get the most out of it in a very simple way.

WE RECOMMEND YOU Noontec Zoro II Wireless Review (Full Review)

The monitor's manufacturing quality is outstanding, it is a very robust design and it oozes quality everywhere, just like the panel. MSI has accustomed us to VA panels in all its products, and the truth is that it uses the best quality technology, with colors that have nothing to envy to IPS, and with the advantage of having a much higher contrast. This panel is not a bit ghosting, making it ideal for competitive gaming.

Finally we talk about the base, this is quite ergonomic with multiple adjustment possibilities, although we take away the possibility of rotating the panel to put it vertically, something that would be very useful for programmers for example.

Its price in online stores is 560 euros, quite high if we consider the market alternatives, and for that price we can get a good 4K panel. The GameSense technology is a differentiating point however and that pays for itself. At a tighter price it would clearly be platinum.
