MSI RTX 2060 Super Gaming X is the most radical version that the manufacturer presents to us for the successor graphics card in features of the RTX 2070. Its weapons you must already know them all, brutal performance in 1080p and 2K, and rates close to 60 FPS in 4K. MSI equips this GPU with its Twin Frozr 7 dual fan heatsink and a striking RGB lighting system to give it the look it deserves for our gaming team.

We expect great FPS and temperature records in this wonder with a 45 MHz factory overclocking, so don't miss this review, as we will see how far it can go.

And before we continue we must thank MSI, a trusted partner that provides us with a large amount of hardware to carry out our complete analysis.

MSI RTX 2060 Super Gaming X technical characteristics

Unboxing

The Unboxing of the MSI RTX 2060 Super Gaming X has nothing different from the rest of the manufacturer's GPUs. In addition, it would be exactly the same as that of the dry Gaming version, if it did not have the clear “X” mark on each of the 6 sides of the box.

MSI is used to putting its high-end products in a double box. The first one of flexible cardboard, to offer a more or less complete description of the key characteristics of the product, on a screenprint with the illuminated GPU as the protagonist. The inner box is made of rigid, completely black cardboard, and stores the graphics card horizontally and protected by thick polyethylene foam panels.

In the bundle we find the following elements:

  • Graphics card MSI RTX 2060 Super Gaming X User guide Support CD Some other sticker

Without further ado, let's start with your exterior review in detail.

Exterior design

Before we start we must emphasize that the Gaming X is the highest performance model of this RTX 2060 range from MSI, at least until now. Just behind and very close we have the Gaming (dry) that does not have overclocking from the factory, although the heatsink and design are exactly the same. Just further back we will have the Ventus as the entry model, with a somewhat more basic heatsink and closer to the reference model.

MSI RTX 2060 Super Gaming X is the new GPU that revives the X range, of which it has been a long time since we had new members, taking the list along with the powerful Gaming Z. And the truth is that the appearance has hardly undergone changes or outside or as we will see later, inside. So we found a double-block aluminum heatsink attached by copper tubes that is protected by a large hard plastic housing.

This set is called Twin Frozr 7, these are the generations that have followed one another since MSI launched its first version of this custom heatsink in 2008. And of course, we have a fairly extensive RGB lighting system with Mystic Light technology and customizable with the software of the same name. In addition to the typical logo on the side, four bands located on the sides of the fans will also light up, in order to gain some extra FPS as a result of our motivation… or not.

A high-quality, two-tone case that elevates the measurements of this GPU to 248 mm long, 128 mm wide and 52 mm thick. Short but wide we must say, and keep in mind that it will occupy 2.5 expansion slots, especially important if we plan to place it in a vertical configuration. Measure your chassis before and you will leave doubts about compatibility.

Attached to this heatsink, or better said, to the housing, we have a TORX FAN 3.0 system consisting of two 95mm diameter fans. They are composed of 14 blades with a design patented by the brand that increases air flow and its pressure on the heatsink. These fans can be managed independently and features Zero Frozr technology, which allows them to be turned off when temperatures drop below 60 ° C.

If we flip the MSI RTX 2060 Super Gaming X, then we find an aluminum backplate with a very premium brushed finish in metallic color. Several openings are distinguished in it to allow the hot air produced on the back of this PCB to flow, which is slightly smaller than the heatsink itself. Perhaps it is time for the large screen-printed logo in this area to have lighting, although we understand that temperatures in the area will be quite high.

Ports and power connections

Now we are going to deal with the rear panel of the GPU, where we have the following video ports:

  • 1x HDMI 2.0b 3x DisplayPort 1.4

As almost always, MSI has done its thing on the port panel of the MSI RTX 2060 Super Gaming X and has removed the USB Type-C port included in the reference model. It is not a drama, it is true, it has also included a third DP, but it eliminates the possibility of connecting virtual reality glasses directly. DP ports support a maximum of 8K resolution, while HDMI goes up to 4K @ 60 FPS.

The power connector remains exactly the same as in the reference model, consisting of an 8-pin connector for the 175W TDP that this GPU generates. Remember that it is the same as the RTX 2070, not in vain has the same chipset inside. For this reason, we recommend installing a power supply of at least 600W of power.

When we disassemble the heatsink, we will see a double 4-pin connector on each end, two of them will be for lighting and another two for fans. For the rest, we have a normal PCIe 3.0 x16 interface.

MSI RTX 2060 Super Gaming X Hardware and Components

Given the exterior design, let's pause a little to analyze this Twin Frozr 7 heatsink from within and of course the most important features and novelties of this graphics card. To remove the case and the dissipation block, we will have to remove all the screws that we find in the area of the blackplate of the GPU, especially the four that hold the block to the socket. Keep in mind that with this we will lose the warranty of the GPU.

Well, the heatsink is made up of two large aluminum blocks with a Wabe-Curved 2 finning system. Instead of being vertical flat fins, this system offers greater thermal performance, being arranged in a diamond shape and glued together. From the main block, 4 copper heatpipes exit to the secondary block and another two to the main block itself to increase heat transfer, since copper has a higher thermal conductivity than aluminum.

These heatpipes are in contact with a cold copper block that is responsible for capturing heat directly from the graphics processor thanks to the high-performance X compound that the brand uses in its GPUs. In addition, they have not been short throwing pasta, the truth. For the memory chips, 8 silicone thermal pads have been used to help dissipate the heat of these, especially when we are overclocking.

The MSI RTX 2060 Super Gaming X mounts a TU106 chip inherited from the RTX 2070, with a 12nm FinFET Turing architecture that runs at a base frequency of 1470MHz and 1695MHz in turbo mode. This means that it has a factory overclocking of 45 MHz, since the reference model, and Gaming itself (simply) reaches up to 1650 MHz. As for the count of graphic cores we have exactly the same, 1920 CUDA Cores, 272 Tensor and 34 RT, giving a performance of 64 ROPs and 136 TMUs.

The memory configuration goes up to 8 GB GDDR6, working at 14 Gbps and with a large overclocking capacity as we already know from other reviews. The bus has been increased to 256 bits to now deliver a speed of 448 GB / s, ranking alongside RTX 2070 and 2070 Super with 448 GB / s transfer speed.

All the synthetic tests and tests have been carried out with the filters to the maximum, as they come in the configuration of each software. The tests consist of tests that run in various resolutions, such as Full HD and 4K. We have run all of them on the Windows 10 Pro operating system in its 1903 version with the latest version drivers available for this graphics card.

What are we looking for in the tests?

First, the best possible image quality. The most important value for us is the average FPS (Frames per second), the higher the number of FPS the more fluid the game will go. To slightly differentiate the quality, we leave you a table to assess the quality in FPS, but we will also have the minimum FPS in the tests that were thus possible:

FRAMES PER SECOND
Frames Per Second (FPS) Gameplay
Less than 30 FPS Limited
30 ~ 40 FPS Playable
40 ~ 60 FPS Good
Greater than 60 FPS Fairly Good or Excellent

Benchmarks and synthetic tests for the MSI RTX 2060 Super Gaming X

For benchmark tests we will use the following titles:

  • 3DMark Fire Strike normal3DMark Fire Strike UltraTime SpyPort Royal (RT) VRMARK Orange Room

Game testing

After synthetic tests, we will proceed to evaluate the real performance in games, thus having a closer guide of what our GPU will be able to deliver under DirecX 12 and OPEN GL.

The tests will be carried out at the three most used resolutions in gaming, we refer to Full HD (1920 x 1080p), QHD or 2K (2560 x 1440p) and UHD or 4K (3840 x 2160p). In this way, we will have a complete range of results to be able to compare them with other GPUs. For each of the games, we have kept the automatic settings selected in each and for each resolution. And to expand the information, we are going to leave the performance records with both a normal configuration and another with Ray Tracking + DLSS in the games that are possible.

The games tested, along with their quality, texture filter and execution API.

  • Final Fantasy XV, standard, TAA, DirectX 11 DOOM, Ultra, TAA, Open GL 4.5 Deus EX Mankind Divided, Alto, Anisotropico x4, DirectX 12 Far Cry 5, Alto, TAA, DirectX 12 Metro Exodus, Alto, Anisotropico x16, DirectX 12 (with and without RT) Shadow of the Tomb Rider, Alto, TAA + Anisotropic x4, DirectX 12 (with and without DLSS)

Overclocking

We have overclocked this MSI RTX 2060 Super Gaming X to see where it is capable of going with a lap boost using MSI Afterburner and EVGA Precision software. The tests have been with the title DEUS EX under the main current resolutions:

Stock @ Overclock
1920 x 1080 (Full HD) 109 FPS 113 FPS
2560 x 1440 (WQHD) 77 FPS 80 FPS
3840 x 2160 (4K) 40 FPS 41 FPS

As we can see the performance increases when we increase the frequency of the memories and the graphic nucleus while we play and in synthetic tests.

We think it is a great option to get an extra for your graphics card, but you should know that overclocking takes time and it is important to adjust the values very well to leave the GPU 100% stable. You can go through our frequencies to find the sweet spot of your card.

Temperatures and consumption

In addition to measuring both its temperature with the HWiNFO program by stressing the GPU with FurMark, we have also simultaneously measured the power consumption of the entire equipment. While doing so, we have taken a few thermal captures with the card at full capacity, all at an ambient temperature of around 24 ° C.

For the most curious we leave you some thermal images of the 100% stressed graphics card for 6 hours.

We have achieved 51 ºC at rest and at maximum power we have reached 67 ºC. Remember that the temperature at rest is normal, since the fans are deactivated until the temperature rises.

While at the consumption level we get 53 W at rest, 288 W at maximum power only the graphics card at maximum performance and when we stress all the cores of the i9-9900k, we get 422 W.

Final words and conclusion about MSI RTX 2060 Super Gaming X

It is time to evaluate the MSI RTX 2060 Super Gaming X. It is one of the best RTX 2060 SUPER graphics cards we have tested. It has everything: design, performance and low noise.

In our tests we have been able to verify that its performance is excellent. It is a great opportunity for those players who are looking for the maximum in Full HD and WQHD 2560 x 1440p resolutions as we have seen in our test bench.

Currently we can acquire it for a price of 475 euros. It is not the cheapest RTX 2060 SUPER but it is one of the best, so it leads us to pay a plus more than other models with worse components. For us it is a 100% recommended option.
