After the reference models that Nvidia has launched of its new Super, now it is the turn for custom models, and the first we bring is nothing less than the MSI RTX 2070 Super Gaming X Trio, the most powerful version of the brand for this “Twin sister” of the RTX 2080 Trio. With its spectacular design in triple TORX 3.0 fan and powerful heatsink inherited from the 2080 with RGB lighting, it will be one of the references of this Super series until the arrival of the impressive RTX 2080 Super later.
We will see everything that this MSI graphics card offers us and of course we will check how it improves the reference model, because that is how it should be.
But first, we are going to thank MSI for sending the product to us so quickly to be able to do its analysis.
MSI RTX 2070 Super Gaming X Trio technical features
Unboxing
And we start as always with an Unboxing of this beautiful and aggressive MSI RTX 2070 Super Gaming X Trio. We found a presentation that is exactly the same as the one that the RTX 2080 Trio brings, that is, a flexible cardboard box that serves as a product wrapper, in which only the external information has been changed and “2070 Super” has been placed.
This box provides us with information about the main characteristics of the graphics card, such as compatible technologies, its triple fan heatsink or gap, as well as other information on precautions for use. The manufacturer has been careful to show us a list of specifications both in this box and in the user guide, and the truth is that it would have been useful to include it.
Now what we will do is open the box, on one of its side faces, and we will remove the rigid cardboard box that is stored inside, which does not have a lid on the top. Instead, a polyethylene foam panel is used, just like in the mold where the card is accommodated.
The accessories included in the bundle are the following:
- MSI RTX 2070 Super Gaming X Trio Graphics Card Metal Clamping Side Plate Merchandising Basic User Installation Guide
Of course no cables and no NVLink cable for multiGPU, in this case no surprise at all. The merchandising we refer to consists of a comic with the protagonist MSI Charmander and a pair of cardboard coasters. Nothing considered from another dimension as we see.
Exterior design
Well, we are going to enter the exterior design of this MSI RTX 2070 Super Gaming X Trio, because it is undoubtedly the most differential element at a glance compared to the reference models.
And the truth is that MSI has not had to do too much extra work in this final presentation of the product, since the RTX 2080 Gaming X Trio model has a heatsink that is exactly the same as the one we are using today. Although this does not deserve to be downplayed, because if something works, why change it. In regards to the measurements, they are also exactly the same, we are talking about 327 mm long, eye for chassis that are small or have HDD bays in the main compartment, 140 mm wide and 55.6 mm thick, which means that almost 3 complete slots are occupied.
The protagonist in this case is the MSI TRI FROZR heatsink with no less than three fans that offers us two forceful aluminum blocks that we will later see in greater detail when we open the GPU. The outer shell is made of good quality plastic with very aggressive edges and of course the presentation of a complete MSI Mystic Light RGB LED lighting system that we can customize through the corresponding software of the brand.
Speaking a little more about these fans, we have a count of 3 TORX FAN 3.0. Two of them with a diameter of 95 mm and 14 blades specially designed to be efficient with minimum noise, and the third fan is 85 mm with a count of 14 blades and identical design. They feature double ball bearings for maximum durability. They offer the same spinning system on all three fans. The indicated would have been to place an alternate motion configuration, in order to cause unrestricted air flow, but in any case, we will not have excessive heating problems in this configuration.
The larger diameter fans will be able to spin at a total of 2, 700 RPM with their spin speed at maximum, while the small one will be able to reach 3, 700 RPM. We have been struck by how quiet the system is, much more than the configuration of the Nvidia reference GPUs, despite having more fans. And it will be much more if we leave the profile as standard, with ZERO FROZR technology that keeps the system stopped while the GPU does not exceed 60 ° C
If we go to the side area, we only find a small extension of the upper case with the logo and silk-screen printing of the MSI brand. At the edge we also have a lighting strip that accompanies the protuberances located in the upper casing.
On the inside we have absolutely no protection, and we only see the large heatsink. These sides have been covered with the minimum of fairing elements, since the manufacturer seeks the maximum possible cooling, and the best way to do this is to open everything to the outside. This area can be reinforced with the metal plate included in the bundle, which we will have to screw together with the card in the expansion slot area.
Now we will move on to see the upper area, which will normally be visible to the user unless we install the card vertically. MSI RTX 2070 Super Gaming X Trio has a huge, thick brushed aluminum backplate that keeps the component PCB protected and rigid.
In it we see a series of openings to improve the aesthetics of the set and a huge MSI logo in black and without lighting. This armature is also responsible for attaching the heatsink to the graphics processor and the PCB. As a curiosity, we do not have an on-board button to manually disable lighting.
Ports and power connections
We leave behind this spectacular design of the graphics card and focus on taking a closer look at the connectors it presents, not only for video, but for multiGPU and other details in MSI RTX 2070 Super Gaming X Trio.
And of course, we must start with the rear panel, which will be the most important for all users. Here we find the following ports:
- 1x HDMI 2.0b3x Display Port 1.4
From here we can get one thing clear, and that is that MSI has struck down the USB Type-C connector at a stroke and has left us only the connectors necessary to connect up to four monitors. In my opinion it is not a wise decision, because, since Nvidia puts it as standard, why do you want to remove it?
In any case, the three Display Ports support a maximum resolution of 8K at 60 FPS and of course 4K, while the HDMI port supports 4K resolutions at 60 FPS. And really here we can use this 4K resolution to play, because being similar to 2080, we will have close FPS rates, and even exceeding 50 frames in 4K.
We also have the NVLink connector to configure a dual GPU system in parallel on compatible motherboards. Here it is the right decision to have maintained this connector as well as the reference model, in fact, the RTX 2070 base would have deserved this connection from the beginning.
Inside we also have three connectors for fans and LED lighting. Here something curious happens, and that is that the two larger diameter fans are connected to the same header, the one located to the right, while the small fan is connected independently. The third header (on the left) is used for lighting. This causes the system to only see two of the three fans, since two will be controlled as if it were one.
We finish with the double 8-pin power connector, which will be necessary to power the 260W TDP that the manufacturer certifies for this MSI RTX 2070 Super Gaming X Trio. Consequently, we recommend using a PSU of at least 650W to go leftover.
PCB, interior and hardware of MSI RTX 2070 Super Gaming X Trio
In this case we have disassembled the entire cooling system of the MSI RTX 2070 Super Gaming X Trio to see what we find inside this wonder. To do this, we have had to remove the four main screws that hold the heatsink to the chip, and a few that hold it to the PCB.
Trigger and PCB
And we started precisely with it, because we have one of the highest performance blocks that the brand has built in recent times for graphics cards. This system is made up of two blocks of considerable thickness and a very dense finned construction in aluminum. But in addition we see a metal frame in the back that is also responsible for attaching the PCB to the block itself with a twin installed on the same PCB.
The cold block that makes contact with the GPU is built in copper, as are the 7 heatpipes that come from it and that distribute the heat between the two dissipation blocks. 5 of them go directly to the second block, while three of them stay in the main block to distribute the heat to the parts closest to the fans. We cannot forget the numerous silicone thermal pads that are scattered around the area for the MOSFETs and VRM condensers.
It is one of the most complex and best worked systems that we have seen for a graphics card that is not top of the range, good work of MSI.
Curiously, we do not have direct contact in the heatsink with the memory chips, since we see how a second metal plate protects the entire area of the PCB so that it remains rigid. It would have been a good option to introduce more contact of these 8 chips with the rest of the heatsink, since when it comes to overclocking the GPU, temperatures will rise. The thermal paste used is compound X traditionally used by the manufacturer.
The design of the electronic board as always is customized by MSI, incorporating a powerful 8 + 2-phase VRM power supply to support overclocking processes to memories and GPUs.
GPU Features
If you have seen the review of the reference cards, you will no longer have doubts about the configuration and technical data of this card, although we will remember the most important elements.
We start with the MSI RTX 2070 Super Gaming X Trio chipset, which is a variant of the TU104 installed by the RTX 2080 models, although a little cut in cores and frequency. In this case, MSI has made a clock setting of 1605 MHz base frequency and 1800 MHz in boost mode, which is 60 MHz less than the RTX 2080 for example. Recall that there are a total of 2560 CUDA Cores, 320 Tensor and 40 RT to give 64 ROPs and 184 TMUs of performance. The cache memory has been increased to 2560 KB in L1 and 4096 in L2, so that Ray Tracing and DLSS work perfectly.
The memory configuration has remained the same as the RTX 2080, with 8 GB GDDR6 working at 14 Gbps with an effective frequency of 7000 MHz, which certainly allow a great overclocking as we will see later. We have a 256-bit bus at a speed of no less than 448 GB / s, although the PCIe 3.0 bus has been maintained, more than enough for current graphics cards.
Test bench and performance
As always, we are going to perform our battery of performance tests that include synthetic tests or benchmarks and tests directly with the games that we normally use in our analyzes. The test bench consists of the following elements:

All the tests we have carried out with the filters as they come in the configuration of each program. The tests consist of tests that run in various resolutions, such as Full HD and 4K, and also to test performance in Ray Tracing in the case of the Port Royal test. We have run all of them on the Windows 10 Pro operating system in its 1903 version with the latest version drivers available for this graphics card.
What are we looking for in these tests?
First, the best possible image quality. The most important value for us is the average FPS (Frames per second), the higher the number of FPS the more fluid the game will go. To slightly differentiate the quality, we leave you a table to assess the quality in FPS based on the quantity we get in each game and resolution.
FRAMES PER SECOND | |
Frames Per Second (FPS) | Gameplay |
Less than 30 FPS | Limited |
30 ~ 40 FPS | Playable |
40 ~ 60 FPS | Good |
Greater than 60 FPS | Fairly Good or Excellent |
Benchmarks and synthetic tests
First, let's look at the results of the synthetic tests carried out, which are made up of the following titles:
- 3DMark Fire Strike normal3DMark Fire Strike UltraTime SpyPort Royal (RT) VRMARK
Game testing
We will proceed to evaluate the real performance in games, thus having a closer guide of what our GPU will be able to deliver under DirectX 11, 12 and OPEN GL.
The tests will be carried out at the three most used resolutions in gaming, Full HD (1920 x 1080p), QHD or 2K (2560 x 1440p) and UHD or 4K (3840 x 2160p). In this way, we will have a complete range of results to be able to compare them with other GPUs with close benefits, for example, the previous RTX and the new AMD Radeon 5700 series. For each of the games, we have maintained the automatic settings selected in each and for each resolution, which will consist of the following:
- Final Fantasy XV, standard, TAA, DirectX 12 DOOM, Ultra, TAA, Open GL 4.5 Deus EX Mankind Divided, Alto, Anisotropico x4, DirectX 11 Far Cry 5, Alto, TAA, DirectX 12 Metro Exodus, Alto, Anisotropico x16, DirectX 12 (with and without RT) Shadow of the Tomb Rider, Alto, TAA + Anisotropic x4, DirectX 12 (with and without DLSS)
The general trend indicates that we are facing a performance slightly above the reference Nvidia RTX 2070 Super without too many problems, although closely followed by it and even exceeded in some tests. Similarly, we see in almost all cases that it performs better than the Radeon VII and the new 5700 and 5700 XT. Keep in mind that the latter were tested with DOOM in the Vulkan API, that's why their records are so high in this game.
Once again, the 50 FPS in 4K resolution is not going to be any problem, and if we lower the graphic quality a little, we will be effortlessly exceeding 60 FPS.
Performance on Metro Exodus with DLSS and Ray Tracing activated
MSI RTX 2070 Super Gaming X Trio allows real-time ray tracing and DLSS, evolution of traditional Antialiasing. In this case we are going to see the effect it has on the IP Metro Exodus, in a configuration of High graphics and RTX also in high.
1920 x 1080 (Full HD) | 2560 x 1440 (WQHD) | 3840 x 2160 (4K) | |
Metro Exodus (without RTX) | 88 FPS | 67 FPS | 41 FPS |
Exodus meter (with RT + DLSS) | 73 FPS | 56 FPS | 39 FPS |
If we look a little higher in the game FPS list, we see a very slight improvement in FPS compared to the reference RTX 2070 Super, and 1 FPS in each resolution, but we see an FPS rate with active RTX exactly the same as in the review of this card. We can conclude that, for this specific case, performance has not improved, but neither has it worsened, so there are two even options in this regard.
Overclocking
We have overclocked MSI RTX 2070 Super Gaming X Trio to see how far it can go with this custom heatsink and increased TDP. In this case, we have opted for the EVGA Precision X1 software, as it comes standard with the option to set its voltage unlocked.
In the overclocking we have achieved complete stability with an increase of the GPU clock by +110 MHz, which is not too much, and with +80 mV in the Core. Likewise, we have increased the frequency of the memories to 700 MHz, placing the consumption in the admissible limit of 110% and the temperature up to a maximum of 88 ° C.
Keep in mind that the memories always allow a higher increase than the core (7700 MHz), which in this case has been quite a bit, reaching up to 1910 MHz. The results with Deus Ex Manking Divided in DirectX 11, are as follows:
Deus EX Mankind Divided | Stock | @ Overclock |
1920 x 1080 (Full HD) | 128 FPS | 132 FPS |
2560 x 1440 (WQHD) | 90 FPS | 97 FPS |
3840 x 2160 (4K) | 49 FPS | 53 FPS |
3DMark Fire Strike | Stock | @ Overclock |
Graphics Score | 25, 811 | 27, 687 |
Physics Score | 25, 449 | 24, 934 |
Combined | 22, 601 | 23, 732 |
Despite not being too aggressive overclocking that we have been allowed to do with stability, we see increases of up to 7 FPS in 2K resolution and 4 FPS in Full HD and 4K resolutions, which is not bad, if we moved to games competitive.
Similarly, the synthetic test reflects an increase in the final score to 23, 732, compared to 22, 601 in stock.
Temperatures and consumption
In addition to measuring both its temperature with the HWiNFO program by stressing the GPU with FurMark, we have also simultaneously measured the power consumption of the entire equipment, to see how this affects the consumption of the reference version.
In terms of temperatures, we have an environment of 24 ° C, so they are quite low records, if we take into account that the fan system does not activate until 60 ° C. Note that while we stress it for several hours, we will obtain averages of only 64 ° C, so we are not straining its integrity.
In the overclocking process, with a profile of stock fans, we have obtained temperatures of 80 ° C, although they will drop to 51 ° C if we put it to the maximum capacity, without a doubt an impressive record.
As for consumption, we also see that it is quite tight, much more than for example the RTX 2080, with a similar chipset and power almost on par, so MSI has done a great job on this GPU. If we also stress the CPU, we will reach our test bench up to 407W.
Final words and conclusion about MSI RTX 2070 Super Gaming X Trio
If something stands out in this MSI RTX 2070 Super Gaming X Trio GPU it is undoubtedly the design, because as usual, the great novelties of the custom models are precisely here. We have an MSI TRI FROZR triple fan TORX FAN 3.0 heatsink and also with MSI Mystic Light lighting that is practically the same as the RTX 2080 Gaming X Trio.
As for the cooling, it is quite superior to the reference model, especially when we demand a little more from the fans, 51 degrees with overclocking support it. It is a very silent system, especially since it implements ZERO FROZR and does not activate until 60 ° C. The only downside is that two fans are connected to the same headboard, and cannot be managed independently.
We recommend our guide to the best graphics cards on the market
The performance in synthetic tests and in games shows that the slight increase in the clock frequency offers some extra FPS in games compared to the reference model, but they are extremely similar values. Playing more than 50 FPS in 4K will not be a problem with this card, although we expected a little more performance as it is a custom model.
The overclocking ability is pretty good when it comes to responsiveness, as small changes have caused us to go up to 7 FPS in the game we've tested. In any case, it doesn't let us increase the frequency of the GPU too much. In this way we reach the end of our analysis, in which this GPU especially stands out for its low temperatures and its excellent aesthetic section.
