This time we bring you the analysis of the MSI RTX 2080 SUPER Gaming X Trio graphics card. Just a few weeks ago we showed you the performance offered by its younger sister, and as you know, it left us with a great taste: performance, cooling and a design that takes away the hiccups.

Will the RTX 2080 SUPER live up to expectations? Will it be the best custom model on the market? All this and much more in our review!

We cannot begin without first thanking MSI for their trust in us by transferring this product to us for analysis.

Technical characteristics MSI RTX 2080 SUPER Gaming X Trio

Unboxing

The MSI RTX 2080 SUPER Gaming X Trio It comes to us in a compact and very colorful box. On its cover we find an image of the Gaming X Trio heatsink and the most important certifications in a background that fuses green and black. While in the rear area we have the main specifications and all their news.

Once we open the bundle we see that it includes:

  • MSI RTX 2080 SUPER Gaming X Trio graphics card Support CD User guide Cardboard with a pair of removable labels Adapter to attach the graphics card to the chassis

The most remarkable thing about this packaging is the incorporation of the adapter to fix our graphics card to the chassis. Its function is key: that the graphics card does not bend and its PCB and the PCI Express slot of our motherboard suffer. Well seen!

Exterior design of the MSI RTX 2080 SUPER Gaming X Trio

And here we have what this graphics card looks like! As usual, it maintains its spectacular and elegant Tri-Frozr triple fan heatsink. There are hardly any major differences from the RTX 2070 SUPER Gaming X Trio. This heatsink has three fans signed by Torx technology in version 3.0.

The fans, thanks to this technology, improve performance to their predecessors, increasing air flow and pushing a stronger flow. This ensures that the fan blades release all static pressure onto the aluminum heatsink. Will they be enough for this new Nvidia beast?

This graphics card is quite robust, as it measures 328 mm wide x 140 mm high x 56.5 mm deep. Its weight does not disappoint us with 1, 531 kg, and that is one of the reasons that the adapter incorporates to fix the GPU well to our chassis. Other manufacturers should take note of this detail.

The design in black and the LED strips in the upper area seem like a success. This combination gives it a very premium touch, and in the event that we do not want lights, we can deactivate them via software. It is also important to know that the MSI RTX 2080 SUPER Gaming X Trio It has a semi-passive system that activates the fans from 60 degrees, always having a very quiet system at rest and efficient at maximum load.

RGB lovers are in luck! We have 5 custom zones with up to 16.8 million colors. Honestly the zones are very well positioned and not aggressive at all. It looks great when they are on.

As with the other RTX 2080 SUPER models that we have analyzed, it incorporates NVLink technology that allows us to connect a total of two graphics cards together. We also liked that its backplate serves both to strengthen the PCB and cooling system. Very good work MSI!

Ports and power connections

After seeing its exterior design in detail and seeing the few new features it incorporates with respect to its lower brother, let's see what we can find in the connectivity section, since there are also new features. Let's start with the connections:

  • 2x HDMI 2.0b2x DisplayPort 1.41 x USB Type C

We still have a great ability to connect multiple monitors at high resolution on this GPU. In fact, the two DisplayPort ports are going to give us a maximum resolution in the standard of 8K to 60 FPS, while in 5K we can go up to 120 Hz and offer compatibility with HDCP, HDR10 and AMD FreeSync 2 HDR as we have already commented.

To conclude with this section, we will talk about the power connectors. We have a total of two 8-pin PCIE power connections each, which are capable of powering the 250W TDP set by NVIDIA. As expected, the connection interface is PCIe 3.0 x16 with its gold-plated contacts for better power transfer. Surely in the next generation we will see PCIe 4.0 in NVIDIA graphics. We continue!

PCB and internal hardware MSI RTX 2080 SUPER Gaming X Trio

As usual in our analyzes, we open the graphics card to rate the quality of the heatsink and the chosen components.

To remove the heatsink we must unscrew almost all the screws on the back: block and backplate. In total we have to remove a total of eight screws. It can be seen that, in addition to dissipating the heat generated by the NVIDIA TU104 chip, it also cools the power supply phases and the card chokes.

The chipset it assembles are the 12nm FinFET TU104s with a base frequency of 1650 MHz in base mode and 1845 MHz in turbo mode, 3072 CUDA Cores, 384 Tensor Cores and 48 RT Cores.

It is complemented with 192 Texture Units (TMUs) and 64 Raster Units (ROPs). The figures of its processor show the 348.5 GT / s in texture rate, 11.2 TFLOPS FP32 (floating point operations), 89 TFLOPS (in matrix operations) and finally 8 Giga Rays in its ability to do Ray Tracing in real time. At the level of components and characteristics the graphics card is ten.

On the other hand we have the 8 GB GDDR6 memory and a 256-bit bus, since the next step was to increase that of the 2080 Ti GPU, but this fact would have completely changed the architecture. All components are military class and have a total of 10 + 2 power phases. We are very happy with this graphics card! But… How will it perform?

Test bench and performance test

Next, we are going to perform the entire battery of performance tests, both synthetic and in games, to this MSI RTX 2080 SUPER Gaming X Trio. Our test bench consists of the following elements:

All the synthetic tests and tests have been carried out with the filters as they come in the configuration of each program. The tests consist of tests that run in various resolutions, such as Full HD and 4K. We have run all of them on the Windows 10 Pro operating system in its 1903 version with the latest drivers offered by NVIDIA.

What do we look for in the tests?

First, the best possible image quality. The most important value for us is the average FPS (Frames per second), the higher the number of FPS the more fluid the game will go. Benchmark scores will help us compare this GPU to the competition. To slightly differentiate the quality, we leave you a table to assess the quality in FPS based on the quantity we get in each game and resolution.

FRAMES PER SECOND
Frames Per Second (FPS) Gameplay
Less than 30 FPS Limited
30 ~ 40 FPS Playable
40 ~ 60 FPS Good
Greater than 60 FPS Fairly Good or Excellent

Benchmarks

For benchmark tests we will use the following titles:

  • Port Royal3DMark Fire Strike Normal3DMark Fire Strike UltraTime SpyVRMARK Orange Room

Game testing

After the synthetic tests, we will proceed to evaluate the real performance in games, thus having a closer guide of what our GPU will be able to deliver under DirecX 12 and Open GL in this case

The tests will be carried out at the three most used resolutions in gaming, we refer to Full HD (1920 x 1080p), QHD or 2K (2560 x 1440p) and UHD or 4K (3840 x 2160p). In this way, we will have a complete range of results to be able to compare them with other GPUs. For each of the games, we have kept the automatic settings selected in each and for each resolution.

  • Final Fantasy XV, standard, TAA, DirectX 11 DOOM, Ultra, TAA, Open GL Deus EX Mankind Divided, Alto, Anisotropico x4, DirectX 12 Far Cry 5, Alto, TAA, DirectX 12 Metro Exodus, Alto, Anisotropico x16, DirectX 12 (without RT) Shadow of the Tomb Rider, High, TAA + Anisotropic x4, DirectX 12

Overclocking

We have been able to slightly raise the graphics card by + 1020 MHz in the core and + 175 MHz in the memories. We have obtained the following results:

Shadow of the Tomb Rider Stock @ Overclock
1920 x 1080 (Full HD) 131 FPS 132 FPS
2560 x 1440 (WQHD) 107 FPS 110 FPS
3840 x 2160 (4K) 60 FPS 63 FPS

Temperature and consumption

It is time to assess its temperature and consumption. We are at rest with a very good temperature of 44 ºC, remember that these temperatures are with the fans completely stopped (semi-fanless system). When we put a 10-hour charge on Furmark, we managed to reach 71 ºC on average, reaching a peak of 75 ºC maximum (specific case).

Regarding consumption, we ran into 62 W at rest and 334 W at maximum power for the graphics card. When we stress 100% CPU + GPU we reach up to 475 W on average. The truth that the i9-9900k is quite demanding of energy?

Final words and conclusion about MSI RTX 2080 SUPER Gaming X Trio

The MSI RTX 2080 SUPER Gaming X Trio hits the market as one of the best graphics cards on the market. It has 8 to 10% more performance than its "not super" version, a hard-to-improve heat sink and top-quality build quality.

In our performance tests we have been able to play without any problem in the main resolutions: 1080, 1440 and 4K. Finally, we have a graphics card for less than 1000 euros worth of 4K resolution.

We would like to emphasize your TRI-FROZR heatsink and TORX 3.0 fans. what good performance it has offered us in our tests. It also allows us to do a little more overclocking on the memories and on the graphics chip. Everything at the level we expected.

Currently we can find it in the main online stores for 919 euros. We think it is a somewhat high price, but until the stock of the normal RTX 2080 is released, we will not see a more attractive price for the public.
