AMD's new Navi graphics cards are enjoying wide reception from the gaming public and this has been further enhanced with custom models. Today we have with us the MSI RX 5700 Gaming X, the least powerful version of this new RDNA architecture waiting for the 5600 and 5500 models to come to light. And it is that AMD seems to have hit the nail on the head this time, cheering up up to three new models for 2020.

This time MSI has cleverly eliminated the Blower heatsink from the reference model and has also put a new, more minimalist and less aggressive design on its Gaming X model that suits it very well. Let's see how this 5700 has behaved, how much will it exceed the reference model? here we go!

But first, we must thank MSI for their trust and collaboration with us in sending us this graphics card for analysis.

Unboxing

The MSI RX 5700 Gaming X has delighted us with a presentation in true Radeon style. With a double cardboard box, the first flexible and with its respective screen printing, and the second rigid, black and with the components inside. In the first coverage we have enough information about this graphics card and its heatsink as usual, using the black and red colors with a huge photo of the card and its new heatsink design.

We remove the first box and open the second one on its upper face to find a large mold of polyethylene foam of quite density and where the graphics card is perfectly fitted, which in turn comes inside an antistatic plastic bag.

In the bundle we find the following elements:

This time we don't have any type of side clamping frame included, making it a very simple bundle.

Exterior design

The RDNA architecture that includes this generation of AMD graphics cards is undoubtedly giving excellent results, even without Ray Tracing capability in real time, but with a gaming performance that is very close to the RTX 2060 Super in the case of This is the MSI RX 5700 Gaming X, and the RTX 2070 Super for the XT version.

MSI has also contributed its grain of sand to give us a very different graphics card than what the brand has accustomed us to. As with the new generation of AMD X570 motherboards, the manufacturer has taken advantage of this new batch of GPUs to update the design of its TWIN FROZR 7 heatsink in a very profound way.

Here we will see the outer part to evaluate the design, later we will go into its bowels to discover its refrigeration configuration. This is the iconic TWIN FROZR 7 with a dual TORX FAN 3.0 fan configuration. The names have not changed, but their measurements have, since we now have a length of 297 mm, a width of 140 mm and a thickness of 58 mm. We are talking about a card that despite being a double fan occupies practically the same as a Gaming Trio and almost 3 expansion slots with its thickness. That makes the weight rise to 1.4 Kg so more value than our PCIe slot is reinforced.

The outer shell of this heatsink has been updated - and in what way! MSI has included metal plates with brushed aluminum finishes in the fan area on a plastic frame. Along with some red plastic details on the edge of them to reinforce the gaming aspect of this new Gaming X. We were already asking for an aesthetic update and here we have it, good work by MSI.

The fans have also been updated, with a slightly larger diameter and 14 dispersion blades specially designed to introduce air with high static pressure and in a silent way. The ZERO FROZR technology that will keep the fans off as long as the temperatures do not exceed 60 ° C could not be missing, that is, in most of the time that we are not playing.

We now move to the side areas of the MSI RX 5700 Gaming X to see that in this new design the large openings in the front and sides are kept to allow hot air to blow out. It seems that the area is a little less covered, or perhaps of that impression when having a greater thickness. But the manufacturer has kept the visible side with the illuminated MSI logo thanks to the MSI Mystic Light technology that we can manage from the corresponding software and integrate it with the rest of the MSI hardware that we have.

And now we are in the upper area to see that a huge backplate has been installed that completely covers the PCB from end to end. It is built in brushed aluminum from the Gaming Trio series, and in addition to providing rigidity, it also has thermal pads in the Socket area and heatsink memories on the back of the board. You can see that it is a GPU that generates a lot of heat, because this backplate is a little more separated from the normal in the MSI Radeon RX 5700 Gaming X and the XT version to improve the hot air output.

Ports and power connections

Standing now in the rear area where the MSI RX 5700 Gaming X has the ports, we can see that the heatsink does not show the finned area, being covered by a metal plate.

It is exactly the same configuration as the reference version and also the top sister XT. In this way we will be able to connect a total of 4 high resolution monitors. In fact, the three DisplayPort ports will give us a maximum resolution in the standard of 8K to 60 FPS, while in 4K and 5K we can go up to 120 Hz. In the case of HDMI, it supports 4K @ 60 Hz resolution.

We move to the power connectors that in this case MSI has increased the pins with respect to the reference model now it rises to two 6 + 2 pin connectors as a complete configuration, unlike the 6 + 2 + 6 of the 5700 that it took out AMD. This is due to the higher laps that MSI has introduced in the GPU and to having a more powerful new generation VRM. The connection interface continues, and will continue to be PCIe 4.0, a version that is only available on AMD X570 boards together with the Ryzen 3000. We should not worry about placing it on a PCIe 3.0 since the slots are backward compatible.

Finally we have two internal 4-pin connectors for the two fans, thus being able to manage them independently, and a connector for the RGB lighting system. In this case, everything is a little more covered to improve the aesthetics of the set.

PCB and internal hardware

To do a good in-depth analysis we have opened the entire cooling system of the MSI RX 5700 Gaming X to see what we find inside. For this, we have removed absolutely all the screws that we have seen, and thus we have separated all the components. Remember that this voids the product warranty.

Heatsink

This TWIN FROZR heatsink basically consists of three elements, the finned heatsink block, the outer aluminum backplate, and an inner aluminum plate that is in contact with the memory chips and attaches the heatsink to the socket.

The most important part is the finned block, made up of two sub blocks made of aluminum with a finned called Wave-Curved 2. For practical purposes, they are wave-shaped or curled fins, glued together to form a mesh with small holes through which air passes. With this, it is possible to increase the contact surface of the air and greater heat distribution than with independent plate fins.

The element responsible for joining these two blocks is a system of 6 nickel-plated copper heatpipes that are in direct contact with the cold plate that is attached to the DIE of the GPU with MSI's own thermal compound X. Towards the second block 6 tubes come out that distribute the heat throughout the surface, while in the main block another two enter to the sides to do the same with the fins on the periphery. With this we manage to take full advantage of the entire surface so that the air cools every available hole.

In addition, the second block has thermal pads to capture the heat of the 9 MOSFETS that and 9 CHOKES that make up the VRM of this graphics card. As for the second included aluminum sheet, it also has silicone thermal pads to capture the heat from the GDDR6 chips and send that heat to the main heatsink. The cooling section is completed with thermal pads located on the upper backplate to cool the PCB below the chips.

Hardware and Features

The characteristics of this MSI Radeon RX 5700 Gaming X are practically the same as the reference model AMD Radeon RX 5700, except the frequency at which the GPU works, being slightly higher.

AMD has been introduced almost entirely to the 7nm FinFET TSMC manufacturing process, not only on GPUs, but also on processors. In this way the outdated and limited GCN architecture has been renewed by the new RDNA and thus be closer to what the Nvidia offer. Its premises are twofold: an increase in the CPI by 25% and an improvement in overall performance per watt of up to 50%. MSI has substantially improved the PCB with a 7 + 2 phase VRM power supply for chipset and SoC, and a much more efficient digital PWM power delivery system.

This is done thanks to a Navi 10 chipset with 36 CUs (processing units) that have 2394 transmission cores inside. MSI has raised the base frequency of the GPU to 1610 MHz, with 1725 MHz in Game mode and 1750 MHz in Boost mode, thus an additional 25 MHz compared to the reference model. In this way the benefits are raised to 144 TMUs and 64 ROPs. The TDP of the chip reaches 180W and the consumption according to MSI up to 225W, so I recommend a 750W power supply, for our part, we tell you that a 650W will be more than enough if we do not have a Ryzen 3900X.

The hardware is completed with a memory of type GDDR6 in a size of 8 GB to 14 Gbps, not only for this AMD Radeon RX 5700, but also for the XT and XT 50 th anniversary model. Similarly, they all use a 256-bit bus at a speed of 448 GB / s through the new PCIe 4.0 bus, thus being at the level of the Nvidia RTX in this regard. It seems that the HBM2 experiment didn't pay off, so it's been a smart change. A priori, the overclocking of these memories is quite high, although not so much that of the Navi 10 GPU, we will see in our test bench how far it is possible to go.

Test bench and performance test

Next, we are going to carry out the corresponding battery of performance tests, both benchmarks and tests in games, to this MSI RX 5700 Gaming X. Our test bench consists of the following components:

All the synthetic tests and tests have been carried out with the filters as they come in the configuration of each program. The tests consist of tests that run in various resolutions, such as Full HD, 2K and 4K. We have run all of them on the Windows 10 Pro operating system in its 1903 version fully updated and with the Adrenalin drivers in the latest available version, being 19.10.1 for this graphics card. As is logical, in this case it has not been possible to perform the Ray Tracing Port Royal test, as it is not a compatible GPU.

What do we look for in the tests?

First, the best possible image quality. The most important value for us is the average FPS (Frames per second), the higher the number of FPS the more fluid the game will go. Benchmark scores will help us compare this GPU to the competition. To slightly differentiate the quality, we leave you a table to assess the quality in FPS based on the quantity we get in each game and resolution.

For benchmark tests we will use the following titles:

The truth is that for this personalized graphics card we have obtained benchmark records somewhat less than in the reference model. Although it is true it is very very close, the normal thing would have been to overcome them, due to the update of the drivers and the improvement in temperatures.

Game testing

We will proceed to evaluate the real performance in games, thus having a closer guide of what our GPU will be able to deliver under DirecX 12, OpenGL and Vulkan in this case.

The tests will be carried out at the three most used resolutions in gaming, we refer to Full HD (1920 x 1080p), QHD or 2K (2560 x 1440p) and UHD or 4K (3840 x 2160p). In this way, we will have a complete range of results to be able to compare them with other GPUs. For each of the games, we have kept the automatic settings selected in each and for each resolution.

On this occasion we already see records more in line with what we were asking for, a performance in general superior to the reference version. In 1080p we see a notable increase in titles like Far Cry 5, with 8 FPS, Deus ex with no less than 19 FPS or Metro, where we see a brutal improvement placing ourselves in more consistent records than on the date of its release.

In the case of 2K and 4K those increases have been slightly reduced, being only 1 or 2 FPS except in 4K with Metro, which has also been placed in more competitive registers. In very few cases we see some FPS less than the reference model, and a general case has been with Final Fantasy.

And for those of you who want to compare the RTX 2060 Super with this card, as you can see that in many of the titles it offers a performance equal to or superior to it, which is great news for AMD and for gamers. It still has to polish the performance under OpenGL, since the DOOM registers are not yet competitive, giving values ​​of 124 FPS in 1080p, 106 FPS in 2K and 56 FPS in 4K, discreet, although better than what it had at the beginning.

Overclocking

As always we have overclocked this MSI RX 5700 Gaming X, at least to what it has allowed us. In this case we have used the MSI After Burner software and also AMD WattMan to see which one offers better results. In this way we have carried out a new 3DMark Fire Strike test and new tests for Shadow Of The Tomb Rider.

As expected, overclocking is very reduced in this GPU, as in all 7nm models. Both in After Burner and WattMan we have been able to increase the frequency of the GPU to its maximum 1850 MHz, and the memory clock to 900 MHz. Despite the fact that After Burner does not allow voltage rise in principle and WattMan does, the performance It has been identical in both programs. And the best ones are very slight, although at least we have taken about 3 FPS in 1080 from the Shadow, something is something.

Temperatures and consumption

Finally, we have proceeded to stress the MSI RX 5700 Gaming X for a few hours while monitoring its temperatures and consumption. To do this, we have always used FurMark for stress and HWiNFO to capture results, along with a wattmeter that measures the power of all the complete equipment, except the monitor. The ambient temperature is 24 ° C.

The temperature improvement under stress is spectacular, with a drop of 15 ⁰C as the one who does not want the thing, and that the fans are practically at a minimum, about 1000-1200 RPM at most. The idle temperature is always maintained at 51 ⁰C so the refrigeration system will be off most of the time. If we turn the fans on full, at 2500 RPM, the temperatures under stress will drop to 57 aC steadily.

Well, this is our analysis of the MSI RX 5700 Gaming X, a graphics card that undoubtedly needed customization and a heatsink of this type. After the bad experience with the Blower heatsink, MSI has placed an impressive TWIN FROZR 7 on top of the Navi chip to brutally lower temperatures.

The size of this card rises to almost 300mm just like the Nvidia models with a superior thickness of almost 3 slots and a deeply renewed design. Now with a much more sober, minimalist and slim shell on the sides thanks to incorporating metal elements while maintaining good overall finishes. The lateral RGB is not lacking, and an integral aluminum backplate in the back area completes a wonderful set.

Without a doubt one of the best GPU we have from AMD, with an excellent performance / price ratio just like the XT model. The drivers note that it has improved a lot since the best gaming performance is palpable and evident in most of them compared to the reference model. 60 FPS are almost guaranteed in all games in High quality and 2K resolution, and of course in 1080p for competitive level.

As for overclocking, we are in the same conditions as all the 5700, with a low capacity to raise frequencies and very slight better performance.

The price we must pay for this MSI RX 5700 Gaming X is about 430 euros approximately. This is 50 euros less than the XT model and almost the same if we compare it with the MSI RTX 2060 Super Gaming X. Based on the results obtained, for us it is a highly recommended card if Ray Tracing is not important to us.
