The new AMD Ryzen 7 and AMD Ryzen 5 processors are having a very good reception by the end user. So it is important that there are good motherboards and with a good stock. And these two premises are more than fulfilled by the new MSI X370 Gaming Pro Carbon motherboard with the top-of-the-range chipset and long-lasting Military Class components.

Prepared? The review begins in… 3… 2… 1… NOW!

We thank MSI Spain for trusting the product for its analysis:

MSI X370 Gaming Pro Carbon technical features

Unboxing and design

The MSI X370 Gaming Pro Carbon It comes in a standard size box. As we have already seen in its Z series where we see a high-end car, the model of the motherboard and its compatibility with virtual reality.

On the back they indicate all the most important technical characteristics and their new features compared to the AM3 series. The evolutionary step from one generation to another is noted.

Once we open the box we find the following bundle:

  • MSI X370 Gaming Pro Carbon motherboard. SATA cable set. Rear hood. SLI bridge. Instruction manual and quick guide. Software CD. Stickers to identify all wiring.

As we can see it is an ATX format plate with dimensions of 30.5 cm x 24.4 cm for the AM4 socket. The plate has sublime: minimalist and that combines Black and gray colors very well with carbon fiber. As expected, it incorporates a matte black PCB.

We really like that the X370 chipset, which is AMD's top of the range for this socket, has been chosen for this motherboard. Supports both AMD Ryzen 7 processors , AMD Ryzen 5 and upcoming AMD Ryzen 3 and Athlon processors.

Rear view of the motherboard, for the most curious.

The MSI X370 Gaming Pro Carbon features two zones with cooling: power phases and one for the X370 chipset. All its components are armored with Military Class 4 technology. If it is the first review of motherboards you read, tell you that MSI shields us with improved components.

That is, the fundamentals are: power phases, chokes, Japanese capacitors. That allows us? without going into much detail, mainly performing a better overclock, greater stability and, above all, durability.

It has a total of 10 supply phases, a digital PWM controller, voltage protection and the aforementioned Military Class 4 components.

We capture the 8-pin EPS connection for auxiliary power to the 24-pin ATX.

The board incorporates a total of 4 64 GB compatible DDR4 RAM sockets with frequencies from 2133 MHz to + 3200 MHz in Dual Channel and is compatible with AMD's AMP-DDR4 profile.

The MSI X370 Gaming Pro Carbon presents a very interesting distribution of its PCI Express connections. It has three PCIe 3.0 to x16 slots and another three normal PCIe to x1. The first two PCI Express 3.0 operate at x16 speed, while the third at x4. The first two slots come equipped with a small armor that better cushions the graphics that are so heavy that they exist on the market today.

The motherboard offers compatibility with Nvidia and AMD graphics cards . In the case of Nvidia it allows us to connect two graphics cards in SLI, while with AMD in CrossFireX up to 3 graphics cards.

As expected, it incorporates two M.2 connections to install any SSD with type 2242/2260/2280/22110 format (42/60/80 and 110 mm). As we have already discussed, these devices are very fast and have a bandwidth speed of up to 32 GB / s.

One of the main improvements in this new line is the incorporation of the MSI Shield M.2 technology. What functionality does this new design offer us? It basically cools up to 40% more to M2 SATA and NVMe drives.

The design is quite simple, it is a piece of metal with a thermalpad that sticks on the M2 NVMe disk in question. Thanks to the box fans, the SSD can improve its performance and not lower the write / read power of these hot chips. We believe that even with a slightly thicker sheet metal these temperatures could be significantly improved.

The sound card is signed by a Realtek ALC1150. Although it is not a top of the range chip, MSI has taken the trouble to improve it with its Audio Boost 4 technology. What news does it offer us? Better sound quality through the use of premium quality audio components with 8 channels. Which will make us enjoy a more crystalline sound and with a high impedance headphone amplifier.

Regarding storage, it has six 6 GB / s SATA III connections with support for RAID 0.1, 5 and 10. In the image we see only 4 SATA connections, but in the lower area of the board, we will find the other two connections as We already saw in his sister Z270.

RGB lighting takes on more importance in this new generation of motherboards. MSI specifically relies on Mystic Light technology with 16.8 million colors. What areas does it light up? Both the area of the rear connections, the sound card and the heatsink of the motherboard chipset. The result is great!

Finally we detail the rear connections of the MSI Z270 Gaming PRO Carbon. They are made up of:

  • 1 x PS2.6 x USB 3.0.1 x DVI.1 X USB 3.1 Type C.1 X USB 3.1 Type A.1 x LAN Gigabit Killer E2500. 8 channel sound output.

BIOS

Although the BIOS is currently somewhat green , but it is much better than the first MSI X370 motherboards that we have tested. We can see high quality details, including an attractive design, clear options and without a thousand options, it allows you to customize fans and monitor the entire system with several clicks. A good job for the MSI team?

Final words and conclusion about MSI X370 Gaming Pro Carbon

The MSI X370 Gaming Pro Carbon is a very interesting motherboard for the AM4 socket. Given the shortage in the first months of the AM4 series launch, this model comes with sufficient stock and high-quality components.

It has a total of 10 power phases, RGB lighting, high quality heatsink, very attractive design, very good quality components and a large overclocking capacity. Although BIOSes still need to be improved, we believe that few currently offer so much for so little money.

We recommend reading the best motherboards on the market.

In our tests we have been able to verify that its performance has been excellent. Putting the AMD Ryzen 1700 at a frequency of 4 GHz without much problem. The memories have been able to go up to 2400 MHz, we would have liked to go up to 3200 MHz, which is what it allows natively, but it has been impossible. Hopefully MSI can later offer us a BIOS that allows it.

Its price in store is approximately 185 euros. And it makes it one of the cheapest options next to the MSI X370 Krait Gaming (remember, it's worth 159 euros).
