MSI X470 Gaming Pro Carbon is one of the best motherboards, which we can find on the market for second generation AMD Ryzen processors. Equipped with an X470 chipset, it will offer us all the benefits of the AMD platform, all without neglecting the aesthetics, so important today.

First of all, we thank MSI for the trust placed in ceding the product to us for analysis.

MSI X470 Gaming Pro Carbon technical features

Unboxing and design

The MSI X470 Gaming Pro Carbon motherboard is delivered to the user in a cardboard box with excellent quality printing and a color scheme based on the Taiwanese company's corporate image.

The box shows us a high-quality image of the motherboard, as well as its most important features including RGB Mystic Light lighting, CrossFire and SLI support, and native compatibility with second-generation AMD Ryzen processors.

The motherboard comes inside an anti-static bag to avoid any type of damage during transportation. In a second department all the accessories come. It is a great presentation for a product in which much care has been put.

MSI X470 Gaming Pro Carbon is a motherboard that is built with a standard ATX form factor, which has allowed the manufacturer to mount quite a few ports and connection headers. The X470 chipset is AMD's new top of the range offering compatibility with second-generation Ryzen processors right out of the box. As for the socket, it is the AM4, compatible with all Ryzen processors and Bristol Ridge APUs.

It has a 24-pin ATX connector and two 8-pin EPS connectors, something that ensures maximum stability and will allow the processor to work perfectly even under the most demanding overclocking.

MSI has assembled an 8 + 2 phase supply VRM with the best quality components. The brand has opted for the use of first-rate components so that the VRM can work at a lower temperature and be much more stable. Two large heat sinks are placed on this VRM, which will prevent the MOSFETs from overheating even under demanding overclocking conditions.

A heatsink has also been placed over the X470 chipset. Both heatsinks include an RGB lighting system that can be managed through the MSI Mystic Light application, which will help to achieve the best aesthetics.

Next to the socket we find four DDR4 DIMM slots with support for up to 64 GB of memory in dual channel configuration. These slots have DDR4 Boost technology, developed by MSI to improve the performance of the main memory of the system. Something that will help you get a few more FPS to the games and that the applications load faster and are more fluid.

MSI has also included its 1 Second Overclocking technology, which will allow you to take your PC to the limit of its performance with a single mouse click. This technology is responsible for overclocking the processor and the graphics card so that you can obtain its best performance, all in a completely secure way. MSI has done an excellent job of fine-tuning this technology.

For video game lovers, three PCI Express 3.0 x16 slots have been included, with support for AMD CrossFire 3-way and Nvidia SLI 2-way, so you can enjoy maximum fluidity in your favorite games even at 4K resolution.

The first two slots are steel reinforced with Steel Armor and Steel Slot technologies, which will prevent these slots from being damaged by the weight of the largest and heaviest graphics cards on the market.

Two M.2 32 Gb / s slots and eight SATA III 6 Gb / s ports provide ample storage possibilities on this motherboard.

The first two include MSI M.2 Shield Frozr heatsinks to prevent overheating of the controller and memory chips in the NVMe SSDs, allowing them to maintain peak performance under prolonged workloads.

A lower operating temperature will also help you extend the life of these precious components. These heatsinks are able to reduce the temperature by up to 35%, which with a Samsung 950 Pro translates into an average speed of 154 Mbps higher and finish the job sooner.

As for the network, the Killer E2500 controller has been chosen, well known in MSI products and which gives exceptional performance. This system offers the best performance in video games by prioritizing packages related to these, thus reducing latency and improving transfer speed.

The sound has not been neglected either, in this case we find the Realtek ALC 1220 motor with an independent section of the PCB to avoid interference, MSI has included RGB lighting in this area to improve aesthetics. This sound system uses separate audio channels to deliver cleaner, interference-free sound. It also offers a high impedance headphone amp.

MSI has reinforced this sound system with Nahimic 4 technology, which has a military origin and was developed to offer soldiers a faithful position on the battlefield. This technology offers an advanced virtual 7.1 surround engine, the possibility of visually tracking enemies and a very clean sound through the microphone, so you can communicate perfectly with your comrades.

An AMD Radeon is seen but all the tests we passed with an Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti

To check the stability of the processor and the motherboard we have stressed with Prime 95 Custom and liquid cooling. Although we have been able to bring the processor to 4.25 GHz, the temperatures were somewhat high and we have decided to leave it in stock frequency.

We did not want to limit it and we have used the Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti graphics card. Without further delay, let's see the results obtained in our tests with a 1920 x 1080 (Full HD) monitor.

BIOS

The BIOS that MSI offers is very complete! It offers us multiple options and scenarios: adjust overclock to precision, monitor all installed components, adjust the fan curve, create profiles or update the BIOS in just 3 clicks.

Final words and conclusion about MSI X470 Gaming Pro Carbon

The MSI X470 Gaming Pro Carbon is a mid / high-end motherboard with quality components, improved power phases, offers a great experience on a gaming device and a very good overclocking capacity.

In our tests with an AMD Ryzen 7 2700X and an Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti we have been able to enjoy playing in both Full HD and 4K resolution. We really liked that it allows us to overclock up to 4.25 GHz to our processor.

We recommend reading our guide to the best motherboards on the market

We would like to highlight the very good cooling that your M.2 SHIELD heatsink performs. With this we manage to lower between 10 to 20 ºC any SSD NVME M.2. What a barbarian!

Special mention for its enhanced sound card with Nahimic 3 components, amplifier for professional helmets and compatibility with MSI Audio Boost 4 software. With these enhancements we do not need to purchase a dedicated sound card to enjoy playing or listening to high quality music.

Currently its price ranges around 190 euros in online stores. We believe it is one of the best quality / price options on the market. What do you think about the MSI X470 Gaming Pro Carbon?
