Stephen Hawking, the latest genius in science and more specifically in astrophysics, has died at the age of 76 after a long and hard fight against ALS, the degenerative disease that has kept him completely still for decades.

Stephen Hawking is a British astrophysicist who authored "A Brief History of Time" and one of the brightest minds in recent decades, if not the most. Stephen Hawking was born on January 8, 1942, just 300 years after the death of Galileo Galilei.

The British was diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) at the age of 21 when he was in the first year of his doctorate, the neurodegenerative disease that has been gradually ending his mobility until leaving him prostrate in a wheelchair and depending on a speech synthesizer to speak. This situation has not prevented Stephen Hawking from becoming the brightest scientist in recent decades, giving everyone a taste of how to overcome one of the harshest and most cruel situations that a human being can face.

In 1974 he theorized what is now known as Hawking radiation, an energy source that is capable of escaping the gravity of black holes, and which suggests that these mysterious objects are losing mass over time, until reach full evaporation. In 2002, Hawking said he would like to have Hawking's radiation equation etched on his headstone.

Hawking was in the Lucasian Chair at the University of Cambridge from 1979 to 2009, the year in which he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by United States precedent Barack Obama.

The Hawking family has claimed that Stephen died peacefully at his home in Cambridge, England.
