Unboxing and design

Netgear GS108PP comes with the usual brand presentation. A white cardboard box with corporate colors white and orange and a full color drawing of the equipment purchased.

Both on the front and the back we have information about the main characteristics of the equipment in various languages, including Spanish. In addition, in the rear area it has been used to draw a simple diagram of devices and connections to show the possibilities of the router. Making it clear that it is a Gigabit switch and not manageable

We open the box and we have all the components well arranged in an egg-shaped cardboard mold where the most notable are the small dimensions of the main equipment. Even the battery for connecting to the voltage is larger. In summary, the components that we find are:

The construction finish of this Netgear GS108PP is completely metallic both on the side and on the bottom and top. It is a device oriented to remain installed in RACK cabinets, so this section is necessary to withstand the conditions to which it could be subjected. We must bear in mind that these equipments are designed to obtain maximum durability, not a beautiful design.

The most interesting thing is that we can configure the equipment in three power modes according to the needs we have and compatibility with the PoE connections of the hosts. Unfortunately we do not have the latency register for the different connections that these ports support. In our tests we have obtained latencies less than 1 millisecond, as should be the case in a physical connection. Therefore, this record is merely anecdotal.

The total bandwidth for this switch is 16 Gbps, excellent performance for a team of this price and characteristics.

If we start looking through the left area, we find the Power and PoE indicator LEDs if it is supported by the equipment.

Right next to it, we find the legend for the LEDs located on the ethernet ports. If our connection is gigabit we will get a green light on the left side and if it is less efficient the light will be yellow. In case the connected equipment supports PoE / PoE + the right light will also illuminate in Green, obviously this is not our case.

As expected, the device perfectly meets expectations, placing itself in records very close to the maximum it supports. We must also take into account the performance of computer network cards, as these could worsen the results.

Now, in a more visual way, we are going to try to send a large file from one computer to another through a switch.

If we perform the conversion between Mbits and MB, theoretically we should obtain 1000/8 = 125 MB / s. in our case we have obtained an average of 111 MB / s, which is located in practically the results of any switch today, whether it is expensive or cheap.

Final words and conclusion about Netgear GS108PP

Netgear GS108PP is a switch that perfectly meets user expectations in both performance and product quality. It is ideal for shops where several connections are necessary for cameras, equipment, telephones or the design of small LAN networks with a performance of 1 Gbps, let's not kid ourselves, it is the standard in the network cards of a computer nowadays.

We have 8 Gigabit Ethernet ports available with PoE + capacity up to 30W per port. This feature is ideal for the needs that we have already discussed above. The performance is fully correct in data transfer supporting up to 16 Gb of bandwidth.

As for aspects to consider, we miss more information about the hardware that mounts inside. It would be interesting to know some installation characteristics. In addition, we do not know how the team will respond to summer temperatures, although it is true that in the tests we have not noticed absolutely nothing regarding heating, so we assume that despite res passive cooling it will perform properly.

The price of Netgear GS10 8P P stands at 111 euros, a really attractive price if we take into account everything it offers us. We think that it is an indispensable element in small or medium businesses that make use of LAN connections with PoE hardware.
