The Netgear Orbi RBK40 comes with the usual presentation in the products of this manufacturer, the kit arrives presents in a standard-size cardboard box in the brand's corporate colors. Netgear Orbi RBK40 is a set of router and network extender of the latest generation that will allow us to extend the range of our WiFi network in a very simple and comfortable way. Both devices are identical in appearance with a minimalist design that is based on the use of soft colored plastic with a glossy finish, in terms of dimensions they reach measures of 16.25 x 7.87 x 20.3 cm and a weight of 453 grams.

The router includes AC2200 tri-band technology with four internal antennas that can offer a maximum theoretical speed of 1, 266 Mhz (400Mbps in the 2.4GHz band and 866Mbps in the 5GHz band). All sets are used to communicate the router with the satellite, thus both devices are part of the same network and there is no need to configure anything additional on the satellite.

Firmware and configuration

Netgear Orbi RBK40 offers great flexibility with the possibility of configuring it through a mobile application or through the use of a web-based console, in this latter way we will not have to install anything. The interface is very easy to use and offers all the basic and advanced settings that are characteristic of a router, something that helps Netgear to differentiate itself from its competitors that usually offer fewer configuration options. The Home section includes tabs for basic and advanced settings as well as displaying basic information about the status of the Internet connection, WiFi network, connected devices, and parental controls.

In case you want more advanced control of our network, we can access the advanced settings section that allows us to manage security with parental controls to block access to websites and some users. Additionally we can also configure it to send us an email when someone tries to access a blocked site, very useful for the most suspicious users. It also offers us advanced WiFi settings that include MU-MIMO technology management, VPN services and parental controls to limit access to the little ones in the house.

At the statistical level we have a traffic quantifier that will help us control the amount of data used in case we have a limited plan contracted. We can configure that access to the network is cut off once the traffic limit is reached.

Netgear Orbi RBK40 is a router + network extender kit that solves the main drawback of wireless networks, the loss of coverage as we move away from the source of the signal. This will give us the possibility to navigate at any speed in any part of our house without the hassle of cables. One of the points that stands out the most is the design and the construction quality that it provides us, since it combines great with the modern houses of today.

In our tests we have been able to verify that the performance is very similar to that of an Asus RT-AC87U that we tested a long time ago and that it is one step below its older brother, the Netgear RBK 50 with AC3000. But does the price justify the performance difference?

We would have liked that Netgear in its firmware allows us to separate the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi since the owner of the router can thus have its equipment properly distributed. Hopefully they take note and in future reviews it is possible.
