New amd slides talk about apus ryzen pro, improved cpus ryzen, and vega 20
Table of contents:
We already know that AMD plans to switch to GlobalFoundries' new 12nm FinFET process in 2018 with some improvements in transistor density and increased potential to increase overall system performance. Some slides have now been leaked which appear to show some of the plans for 2018 and 2019, proving that Zen 2 processors are unlikely to launch in 2018, something that is already expected given the current state of the Globalfoundries 7nm manufacturing process..
AMD shows its future plans
On the CPU side, these slides confirm that Pinnacle Ridge from AMD (Ryzen Refresh (12nm)), Matisse (Zen 2), Raven Ridge (Ryzen APU), and Picasso (Ryzen APU refresh?) Will be released on the same AM4 socket. than its current products, confirming that AMD will continue to use its AM4 platform until at least 2019.
It will be interesting to see what kind of enhancements AMD can offer with its Ryzen upgrade, as some clock speed increases or support for higher memory speeds would be hugely beneficial to the Zen architecture. AMD's slide show features Ryzen Pro APUs, Enhanced Ryzen CPUs, and Vega 20.
On the GPU side, it appears that AMD plans to move to PCIe 4.0 with Vega 20, and plans to add support for Frameworks on its Vega GPUs in the coming quarters. At the moment not much is known about Vega 20, although it is likely to be a Vega soda with Globalfoundries' new 12nm manufacturing process as the 7nm will not be ready in 2018.
AMD Ryzen 7 1700 Review in Spanish (Complete Analysis)
Lastly, we have a slide detailing the performance of AMD's Ryzen 5 Pro series of mobile APUs, showing impressive CPU and GPU performance compared to a Kaby Lake CPU with the same consumption levels.
Ryzen Mobile will be a great launch for the company, delivering a mobile CPU architecture that can finally compete with Intel, which has been dominant in this section of the market for several years. AMD is now in a position where they can compete with Intel for power consumption and performance, making their products much more attractive for thin and light notebook designs.
