Ahead of CES 2017 to be held in Las Vegas starting January 5, rumors have begun to emerge that Nvidia plans to update the current 3GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 graphics with a new GPU, the GP104.

Nvidia to announce new GTX 1060 at CES 2017

The rumor that emerged a few hours ago ensures that Nvidia wants to update the current 3GB GTX 1060 of GDDR5 memory with the GP104 graphics core, which is the one used by the GTX 1070 and the GTX 1080. Currently the 3GB GTX 1060 uses the GP106, which is a less powerful variant than GP104 that reaches 4 TFLOPs, while GP104 goes up to 6.5 TFLOPs.

It will use the same chip as the GTX 1080/1070

Nvidia's idea with this move would be none other than to re-use the faulty GP104 chips. Instead of discarding them, they will implement them in the GTX 1060 but cutting the number of SM units (streaming multiprocessor). The GP104 graphics core has about 20 SM units, in the new GTX 1060 the number of SM units will be reduced to 9.

This means that we will have the same chip as the GTX 1080 but with 11 SM units disabled. Both the GP104 and GP106 chips are similar at the architectural level when compared to the GP107 carried by the GTX 1050 / Ti, this would benefit the new graphics with higher clock speeds than in the current GP106.

The 'rumor' seems to be confirmed by another source besides Wccftech, so we could almost give this rumor true.

GTX 1050 / Ti for notebooks

Another novelty that would be at the CES in Las Vegas would be the presentation of the GTX 1050 and 1050 Ti for laptops, in the range of 150 dollars. These two graphics cards would arrive to retire the GTX 960M and GTX 950M that have given so many joys to notebook users.
