NVIDIA plans to offer a new variant of the GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card, using, surprisingly, the GPU of its older brothers. The latest rumors coming directly from China indicate that NVIDIA plans to use a high-performance GPU on the GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card that has been used in its high-end products, such as the GTX 1080 and GTX 1070.

6GB GTX 1060 with a new silicon

The GPU that is supposed to be used within the GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB graphics cards would be the GP104. The NVIDIA GP104 GPU has many variants and is used in various high-end GeForce graphics cards. These include the GTX 1080, GTX 1070 Ti, and GTX 1070 that have been available since 2016 (with the exception of the GTX 1070 Ti).

The source notes that the NVIDIA GP104-300 chip, which is used in the GTX 1070, will shrink specifically for GeForce GTX 1060 graphics cards. The trimmed GPUs will conform to the specifications of the GP106 GPU and will not offer the added benefits that many expect from a high-end GP104 GPU.

It is said that the 3GB model will also have a new variant with the GP104-140 GPU. This would also make it the sixth variant of the GeForce GTX 1060 family.

So now the question is why NVIDIA is launching this variant so late to the market. Firstly, the card would not affect any owner who owns a current 6GB GTX 1060. It is practically the same thing and nobody would notice the change. However, this shows that NVIDIA is wanting to ditch the stock of its Pascal GPUs to make way for the next generation.
