Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 is the least powerful of the graphics cards that have been released with the promising Turing architecture, alongside the RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti. Turing is a truly innovative architecture, since it has not focused on increasing brute force in rasterization, but rather artificial intelligence elements that debuted with Volta have been added, it is the Tensor Core, cores specialized in accelerating operations of artificial intelligence inference. Turing also adds the RT Core, one special cores that will be used to process raytracing in real time in games for the first time in history.
Beyond the foregoing, the GeForce RTX 2070 is manufactured with mid-range TU106 silicon, which contains 2944 CUDA Cores, 184 ROPs, and 64 TMUs operating at a base frequency of 1410MHz that goes up to 1845 MHz under turbo. Its graphics memory is 8 GB, it is GDDR6 chips but with a 256-bit interface and a speed of 14 Gbs, giving a bandwidth of 448 GB / s.
As for the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, it is based on the Pascal architecture and the GP102 silicon also manufactured by TSMC but at 16nm FinFET. This is the top-of-the-range silicon from the previous generation, making it very powerful and still has a lot to say in the gaming world. In this case there is no trace of the Tensor Core and RT cores that are included in the Turing architecture. We find a powerful nucleus formed by 3584 CUDA Cores, 224 TMUs and 88 ROPs that operate at a maximum speed of 1, 580 MHz. As for memory, it has 11 GB GDDR5X at a speed of 11 GHz and with a 352-bit interface, which translates to a bandwidth of 484 GB / s.
Gaming performance
Once seen the characteristics of both cards we will see their performance in the games of our usual test bench. All games have been tested at 1080p, 2K and 4K for the most realistic view possible. The chosen processor has been the Core i7 8700K, the most powerful model of the Coffee Lake architecture, and which is considered the king of gaming. Thanks to this powerful processor, we will avoid bottlenecks that limit graphics cards.

Let's also see how the new card behaves in some synthetic tests:

As for the performance in the games of our test bench, the new GeForce RTX 2070 is less powerful than the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, this is something that we already expected, since the logical thing is that it gets to the level of the GeForce GTX 1080, the second most powerful Pascal-based gaming graphics card. Despite this, the difference with the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti is not excessively large, and could be further reduced as the drivers for Turing are more optimized, and manufacturers know how to take better advantage of this new architecture.
The Turing architecture has undergone profound changes internally, one of the most important being that the units related to the calculation of integers and decimals are now separated, allowing the card to do both operations at the same time, and in a way much more efficient. This is a feature that is not magically leveraged, so there is hard optimization work ahead to get the most out of it.
Consumption and temperatures
We continue our analysis by comparing the operating temperatures of all cards and their power consumption. As always, the consumption is from the complete unit, measured directly from the wall socket.
Consumption and temperature |
||||
Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 | Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 | Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080Ti | Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti | |
Idle consumption | 61 W | 58 W | 62 W | 48 W |
Load consumption | 317 W | 368 W | 366 W | 342 W |
Resting temperature | 30ºC | 33 ºC | 31 ºC | 27 ºC |
Charging temperature | 59ºC | 71 ºC | 74 ºC | 83 ºC |
The difference in temperature of the GeForce RTX 2070 with the rest of the cards under load is especially noticeable, so much so that it even reaches 24ºC compared to the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti. This is due to two fundamental reasons, the first is that the TDP of this RTX 2070 is much more moderate than the rest of the cards, so less heat is generated at full load.
The other cause is due to how inefficient the old Nvidia heatsink was, which was to be expected, since the turbine models are not exactly the best. The new GeForce RTX heatsink lives up to the models of the assemblers, making Founders Edition cards more appealing than ever. It is a delight to see the new GeForce RTX 2070 not even reach 60ºC at full load.
As for consumption, we see that the GeForce RTX 2070 is the one that consumes the least, something that was already to be expected seeing its more moderate TDP and the low operating temperatures. The Turing architecture is very efficient with energy, seeing this data we can already dream of an alleged RTX 2060 being a lighter.
Nvidia RTX 2070 Is the new card worth it?
After analyzing the benefits of the new GeForce RTX graphics cards and the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, it is time to make a final assessment on the RTX 2070, the latest to hit the market. First of all we have to put the prices in context, because it is the only way to continue. The GeForce RTX 2070 can be found for a starting price of about 520 euros approximately in the main online stores. The GeForce GTX 1080 Ti can currently be purchased for around 750-800 euros, a price slightly lower than the 850 euros for the GeForce RTX 2080, although there is not much distance. With these data we can think that the price of the GeForce RTX 2070 is quite correct if we take into account its sisters.
The price of the GeForce RTX 2070 puts it a little lower than the GeForce GTX 1080, the second most powerful Pascal-based card. This makes us discard the latter directly, since for less money we can buy a newer card that will be better, and even more as the drivers mature. As for whether it is worth making the leap from the GeForce GTX 1080 to the RTX 2070, right now it is not worth it, although it will have to be seen how the situation is when you start using raytracing in games.
We believe that the GeForce RTX 2070 is a very interesting purchase for anyone who has a GTX 1070 or something lower, as long as the processor accompanies, of course. In fact , it seems to us the most interesting Turing card right now, due to its excellent characteristics and a price that is high, but not exorbitant seeing the market trend.
