With the launch of the new Nvidia GTX Titan V graphics card based on the Volta architecture, we ask ourselves what kind of improvements Volta offers over Pascal. In particular, it is wanted to know if Volta is limited to adding a greater amount of CUDA Cores or if, in addition, the performance of each of them is improved with new features.

Consumers want to know what they can expect from the arrival of Volta or Ampere-based gaming graphics cards, the latter would be nothing more than Volta without the specific additions for artificial intelligence. Early Gamers Nexus reports show what appears to be improved support for DirectX 12 and more advanced asynchronous computing capabilities.

Andreas Schilling, publisher of HardwareLuxx, was also able to get an Nvidia Titan V to do tests related to Direct3D 12 functions, to discover that Volta includes DirectX 12 capabilities more advanced than Pascal. These results simply show that the Volta architecture supports Tier 3 Conservative Rasterization.

While it is nice to see Nvidia improve its compatibility with the DirectX 12 feature level, these enhancements only really show that Nvidia checked another box for DirectX 12 compatibility. It does not mean that Nvidia has not enhanced its existing DirectX 12 features or exceeded Microsoft specifications in other areas.

Another field in which the Volta architecture has proven to be brilliant is in cryptocurrency mining, especially Ethereum where it can double what AMD's Vega architecture can offer, although the high price of the Nvidia card does not seem compensate for such improvement.
