Nvidia parabricks: free 90-day license to stop covid
Table of contents:
NVIDIA has wanted to join the fight against the coronavirus with Parabricks. Therefore, it offers a free license for researchers.
The titan of the graphics card industry has decided to fight the coronavirus by offering its software to researchers. This software is based on the genome analysis toolkit, so Parabricks uses GPUs to speed up the analysis of sequential data. This is what NVIDIA wanted to express in a statement from its official page. We tell you everything.
NVIDIA Parabricks: Free Coronavirus Researchers License
NVIDIA has wanted to do its bit in the fight against COVID-19 by offering its Parabricks software free to researchers. This is a 90-day license for every global researcher that allows you to use this genome analysis toolkit. However, that license may extend for more than those 90 days, NVIDIA has stated.
We recognize that the pandemic is evolving, so we will monitor the situation and expand the offering as needed.
To be a beneficiary of this free license, 2 things are required:
- Have access to NVIDIA graphics cards. Fill out this form to request a Parabricks license.
For example, researchers working with long read data at Oxford Nanopore have a GPU acceleration tools repository available on GitHub. Also, there are various apps that incorporate NVIDIA GPU acceleration, such as Medaka, Racon, Raven, Unicycler or Reticulatus.
Parabricks to reduce diagnosis time
In this way, the researchers are aware of the new coronavirus, as well as the genomes of those infected with COVID-19. They seek to understand the spread of the disease, such as knowing who is most affected by it. The problem is that the analysis of genomic sequences requires time and computing power.
Thus, the Parabricks team joined NVIDIA in December to offer them the latest tool for this job. This can reduce the diagnosis time of the human genome to less than one hour from a single server. Currently, ordinary diagnosis takes days.
Finishing the statement, the company states the following.
Given the unprecedented spread of the pandemic, obtaining results in hours could have an extraordinary impact in understanding the evolution of the virus and the development of vaccines
Therefore, NVIDIA invites its partners to join them in their mission to assist the community of scientists. So they are in talks with cloud service providers and supercomputing centers to provide that Parabricks access on their platforms.
