It is worth making a comparison between Nvidia RTX 2060 vs RTX 2070 vs RTX 2080 Max-Q due to the great avalanche of laptops that we already have available in the market with the new Nvidia RTX technology in its graphic section. Technology that is certainly expensive but that takes this new family of ultra powerful laptops to a new level of performance.

We have been lucky to have tried three top-notch notebooks with Nvidia RTX in these three configurations, all of them with the same microprocessor. That is why we have decided to prepare this comparison and see the differences between the three Max-Q design graphics cards on the market.

Technical sheet and characteristics

Before generating the results obtained, it is worth presenting in a table the technical characteristics of these cards and thus quickly see the difference there is with the desktop ones.

Desktop Card Features

Max-Q card features

In these two tables we can see the differences in the configurations of Max-Q cards and desktop cards. It should be noted that the RTX 2060 is not presented as a card with a Max-Q design as such, and appears without this distinctive, but to indicate that it is for a laptop, we will name it as such.

We observe that the greatest differences are in the clock frequency, being in all cases lower than the desktop cards, in order to considerably reduce the TDP to the minimum 80 W and Maximum 150, depending on each configuration. In some cases , the number of RT cores has also been reduced, as in the case of the RTX 2060 and RTX 2080 to lower consumption and, therefore, the maximum bandwidth.

The information that we have at the hand of Nvidia is that the performance of these laptop graphics is 70% compared to those of the desktop and consuming up to 1/3 of energy compared to their higher power versions. They are spectacular results and this is also why RTX laptops are so extremely expensive.

As for GDDR6 memory configuration, each of the three products are kept exactly the same configuration as the desktop version, something very positive.

Performance comparisons Nvidia RTX 2060 vs RTX 2070 vs RTX 2080 Max-Q

What interests us the most is knowing how these new cards perform in today's laptops. We must know in advance that the final result will not only depend on the card, but also on the rest of the hardware that the manufacturer has introduced in the equipment.

Knowing this, we are going to present the three laptops that mount each of these cards:

We see that they are quite similar teams in both memory speed and CPU, and they have NVMe hard drives, so the comparison will be quite realistic, which is what is important.

The titles we have tested on these three teams are:

  • Shadow Of The Tomb Rider Deux Ex Mankind Divided Far Cry 5 Doom 4 Final Fantasy XV

In all cases, the graphic configuration of the games has been exactly the same, graphic options in Ultra with identical antialiasing in all three laptops. Also the resolution has been the same and the Fraps capture program.

In terms of gaming performance, we see quite striking and somewhat disparate results, especially with the RTX 2070 and RTX 2060. The first of them is surpassed in some games by the RTX 2060 such as Tomb Rider or Far Cry, staying extremely close in the rest of the titles.

We must bear in mind that, although it is true that the equipment has similar hardware configurations, the Gigabyte Aero has a quite poor heatsink and the temperatures were much higher than those of the AORUS and due to that, the performance would be reduced on this RTX 2070. Despite this, they are very close results, which is the constant of these two cards in all tests, both desktop and laptop, and reflect how good this new RTX 2060 is.

For its part, the Nvidia RTX 2080 has quite a performance advantage over its little sisters, especially in poorly optimized games like Deux Ex and in high-demand games like Final Fantasy XV.

We will also contribute the results of the benchmarks with the 3D Mark and PCMark 8 programs to expand data.

For the 3D Mark case and the tests with Fire Strike Ultra and Time Spy, we see again very similar results for the RTX 2070 and RTX 2060, being in third place for the latter. Considering that the CPU is identical, they are quite realistic results and that demonstrate what we already know from the previous section.

For its part, the result offered by PCMark 8 is somewhat different, and is due to what was discussed in the temperatures of the Gigabyte Aero 15-X9, therefore it is in last position, although surprisingly close to the MSI with the 2080. This benchmark is from general purpose and represents to a lesser extent the pure performance of a card, but it does show that a well-optimized PC can give better results than another with pure power.

Conclusion and final words

What we can make clear from this quick analysis is that the relationships between the RTX 2070 and RTX 2060 are also maintained in notebook configurations, with very close results, although taking into account the specifications of each clear equipment. Still, it reinforces the feeling that the smallest card is the one that offers the best performance / price ratio, just as it happens in desktop PCs.

For its part, the RTX 2080 is the undisputed leader, and this is demonstrated by test after test in all areas, the work that Nvidia has done with this card is first-rate. But also first-rate is the price it has, with laptops that comfortably exceed 3, 000 euros, a figure within the reach of few pockets.

With this we conclude our comparison between Nvidia RTX 2060 vs RTX 2070 vs RTX 2080, we hope that this has served many to consider what product to buy and what you are going to find, so there will not be so many surprises. Of course, teams will continue to enter our test bench and we will see if this trend continues or on the contrary, clear positions are established for each card, so stay alert.
