CES 2019 was the stage for the official presentation of the new Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060, a GPU with the innovative Turing architecture that really promises, with performance on par with the previous Nvidia GTX 1070 Ti, it is undoubtedly destined to be the undisputed queen of the new mid-range.

Like its older sisters, the Nvidia RTX 2060 implements Tensor and RT cores to expand the capabilities of Ray Tracing, VR, and of course, Artificial Intelligence, now also in the mid-range. Although we would have liked to bring you the analysis on the day of its release, for reasons external to us, we could not do it. A few days later we already have it! Will this graphics card be worth it? Don't miss it in our detailed analysis!

Here you have our complete analysis of this graphics card that will surely give us more than a surprise, with what we have seen in the news and our initial comparisons. Let the party begin!

We thank Nvidia for the assignment of this product for our analysis.

Unboxing and design

The presentation of the packaging of this Nvidia RTX 2060 has remained similar to that of its older sisters and even the previous generation. It is a very thick rigid cardboard box that offers extremely good protection. Also the color is very similar to the other models with black and green screen printing with the large model.

In the rest of the sides, we will find interesting information about the new model, as well as the characteristics of its new heatsink built in aluminum and with double fans.

If we open the box, we find the main product perfectly fixed to a high-density foam block and also covered by an anti-static bag. Inside we will find:

  • Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 6GB GDDR6 Warranty Documentation & Indications For Use Quick Guide At least in our bundle we do not have any type of cable

If we were not happy with the brand's previous generation of graphics cards, it was their designs of turbine-driven heatsinks, which were so inefficient in high performance for many hours. Although its great benefit was to mount an SLI without the second graphics card getting much hotter.

In this new generation Turing the turn has been 360 degrees, with a double fan heatsink like its older sisters and a cover entirely made of aluminum. A much more efficient solution and at the height of custom models.

If we turn this Nvidia RTX 2060 over, we will also see a very worked backplate entirely built in gray aluminum with scratch protection, which will provide us with extra protection for the PCB components and increase the rigidity of the assembly.

Regarding the output ports of this GPU, we have a wide variety and with capacity for up to 4 monitors. The connections are distributed in two DisplayPort ports, an HDMI port, USB Type-C and also a DVI-DL output for older monitors. This will provide us with excellent compatibility with practically everything that we can find today.

To power this Nvidia card, the manufacturer has opted for a connector of only 8 pins, which will be enough to power a GPU with a TDP of 160W, compared to 120W from its previous generation counterpart the Nvidia GTX 1060. This is mainly due to the inclusion of more power in graphical processing.

We see interesting the new situation of this connector at the front end to visually hide the cables, an interesting detail. The brand recommends having a power supply of at least 500W to cover the needs of the hardware package that we have in our equipment. Although in our tests we will test what is the actual consumption and what power supply will we need.

This time we have not disassembled the heatsink, although we know that the PCB has a black color full of top quality components. Beneath the main aluminum cover is an integral finned heat exchanger that covers the entire component area. We would find thermal pads in the 6 phases of power that this card has and the rest of the components of course including the main chip.

Speaking in more detail about this TU106 graphics core, it is built on 12nm FinFET architecture with Turing designation. This core implements a total of 1920 CUDA cores with 120 texture units and 48 ROPs, along with 240 Tensor and 30 RT cores responsible for making effective the Ray Tracing technology that makes this Turing architecture the first range of GPUs with the ability to trace ray beam in real time.

As far as speed and performance are concerned, this Nvidia RTX 2060 offers a performance of 6.45 TFLOPS and 5 Gigarrayos / s. All this thanks to a base operating frequency of 1365 MHz and 1680 with Nvidia GPU Boost technology. Of course we have Nvidia Ansel and Nvidia G-Sync capability for dynamic refresh rates, which will provide us with a sharper image in any gaming situation.

We cannot forget the characteristics of its innovative and extremely fast graphic memory. Here is another novelty of this RTX family, which implements GDDR6 chips in all its models, it could not be otherwise if we want Ray Tracing in real time on all models. Well, this 2060 implements 6 GB GDDR6 at a speed of 14 Gbps, under a 192-bit interface that provides us with a bandwidth of 336 GB / s. For seamless performance at resolutions up to 8K (7680 x 4320p) at 60 FPS.

We cannot forget about the temperature, since the integrity of this core will be assured up to a maximum of 88 degrees, from there the thermal throttling will act to preserve the integrity of the components.

As we see the Turing architecture offers us many novelties with respect to the Pascal architecture, and it is not only 12 nm. The GPU's cache memory has been doubled in capacity to provide 50% more performance per core compared to Pascal, something we hope to see very clearly in our tests with the Nvidia RTX 2060 and its counterpart the Nvidia GTX 1060 .

The implementation of the fast (and expensive) GDDR6 memories make them become the first GPUs with real-time Ray Tracing capability, which will provide us with extraordinary shading capabilities with the game filters set to their maximum level. They are also GPUs designed to obtain great performance in Artificial Intelligence where their great capacity is ideal for the process of deep learning and inference.

In this model, we must bear in mind that we will not have connectivity through the NVLink bridge, a substitute for the traditional SLI bridge. So we will not be able to make this type of connection, although we do not believe that it is a graph oriented to this, knowing that there are superior models.

Reviewing the final aspect of this product, we must say that Nvidia has done an excellent job with this model. It is true that the price has risen compared to the previous generation, but it has happened in the same way throughout the model. Precisely the RTX 2060 has been the one that has risen the least compared to its previous counterpart, although it should be, since it is aimed at tighter budgets.

The fact of opting for a heatsink with horizontal fans and a finned exchanger crossed with copper heatpipes to improve heat collection. In addition, the power connection located in the front area will allow us to better place the wiring from the PSU and will give a better appearance to the set. Of course we will see all this in the performance tests below.

For first time buyers of this product, Nvidia has announced that we will be able to choose between Battlefiel V and Anthen for purchase for free using a code redeemable on the official website. This promotion is also extensible to the RTX 2070, 2080 and 2080 Ti models of the same brand. Interesting initiative, if we consider the general increase in the cost of RTX products.

If we go over the specifications of the other GPUs in the RTX family, we will not notice some interesting details. The main one is that the number of graphic cores of this RTX 2060 is closer to the RTX 2070 than the latter on the top model. On the contrary, in this case we will have a bus width of 192 bits and 6 GB GDDR6, compared to the 256 bits and 8 GB GDDR6 of 2070 and 2080. This causes that, in the initial comparisons made, we are shown a closer proximity of this 2060 to 2070 than the latter compared to 2080, something really interesting and that demonstrates the power of the mid-range model.

Compared to the previous generation, the performance of this model is on par with the Nvidia GTX 1070 Ti in most cases and is also tied with AMD's RX Vega 56.

Test bench and performance tests

Heatsink

Corsair H100i V2

Corsair RM1000X

For benchmarks we will use the following titles:

  • 3DMark Fire Strike normal. 3Mark Fire Strike 4K version. Time Spy.VRMARK.

All tests have been passed with the filters to the maximum unless we indicate otherwise. To have adequate performance we have carried out three types of tests: the first is the most common at Full HD 1920 x 1080, the second resolution is making the leap for QHD or 1440P (2560 x 1440P) gamers and the enthusiastic 4K. The operating system we have used has been Windows 10 Pro 64 bit in its latest update in October 2018 and the latest drivers available from the Nvidia website (they have provided us with new ones before they are released for sale).

What are we looking for in the tests?

First, the best possible image quality. The most important value for us is the average FPS (Frames per second), the higher the number of FPS the more fluid the game will go. To slightly differentiate the quality, we leave you a table to assess the quality in FPS, but we will also have the minimum FPS in the tests that were thus possible:

FRAMES BY SECONDS

Frames for Seconds. (FPS)

Gameplay

Less than 30 FPS Limited
30 ~ 40 FPS Playable
40 ~ 60 FPS Good
Greater than 60 FPS Fairly Good or Excellent

Game Testing

We have decided to make the leap to checking various games manually. The reason? Very simple, we want to give a much more realistic vision and cover tests with current games.

Testing Ray Tracing

We are facing a technology that only one game is capable of making it run today. Battlefield V is the only game that we can test with this technology in our test bench. We bring you the results we have obtained with the Nvidia RTX 2060 in Full HD resolution in medium quality.

Battlefield V - 1920 x 1080p (More is better) With Ray Tracing Without Tracing
Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti - High quality 92 FPS 151 FPS
Nvidia RTX 2060 - Average quality 59 FPS 139 FPS

The comparison would be more interesting versus against the RTX 2070 or RTX 2080, but unfortunately we do not have such graphics. But doing a versus against the RTX 2080 Ti we see a big difference in performance, and it should be noted that the quality of the RTX 2080 Ti is high while the RTX 2060 is average.

Temperatures and consumption

The temperatures are quite good with 25 ºC at rest, with the fans always running and at maximum performance it goes up to very good 59 ºC. We see ideal temperatures for a graphics card that gives great performance.

We also passed our new thermal camera to maximum performance. We expected good temperatures due to the type of chip and cooling it integrates, but not so good. We leave you two images with the heating of the graphics card both on its front face and on the face of the backplate.

Consumption is for the entire team *

The table shows the graphics card load at maximum performance while the CPU is idle. When we already load the processor, the consumption rises to 391.7 W on average. You have to remember that all our tests are for 12 hours of intensive use.

Final words and conclusion about Nvidia RTX 2060 Founders Edition

The Nvidia RTX 2060 has left us a great taste in the mouth. Its new Turing TU106 processor manufactured in 12 nm FinFET, 6 GB of GDDR6 memory, compatible with Ray Tracing, DLSS and a reference heatsink with double ventilation makes it the perfect candidate for quality / price.

At the performance level, it is capable of rendering between 55 to 60 FPS with Ray Tracing in Battlefiel V in Full HD resolution. While in the rest of our test bench games it is always with very high FPS in both 1920 x 1080 and WQHD (2560 x 1440p). Even in 4K we can play, but we advise you to have a monitor with G-Sync.

And it is that we can say that with a slight overclock we reach the performance of the RTX 2070 and this remains unseated by its little sister. We will highly recommend it in budgets between 1, 200 to 1, 500 euros.

We recommend reading: how to clean a graphics card step by step

It is very important to indicate that this Founders Edition heatsink is not stopped at rest, it is always rotating at low speeds, for this reason we will have better temperatures at rest than other models that are at 0 dB. But for lovers of extreme silence, you will not like the idea, but we assure you that its sound is not perceived.

Of course, the temperatures and consumption are great. We can perfectly mount a quality 500 ~ 600W source for an AMD Ryzen 7 processor or an Intel Core i7.

We can only buy this reference model in the official Nvidia store for 369 euros. Although they have already started to see custom models listed from + 400 euros. Seeing the performance, how quiet it is, and the excellent heatsink it incorporates, we see no reason to spend more euros on a custom model, do we? Will we see this very soon on our website?

Although we also want to indicate that we would have liked the price to be around 300 euros as the GTX 1060 did, but we understand that the development and implementation of technologies such as Ray Tracing and DLSS has an extra cost. What do you think of this Nvidia RTX 2060? Do you think it's worth it? Would you want it for your PC?
