Nvidia rtx 2070 super review in Spanish (full analysis)

Table of contents:

The second graphics card that Nvidia has released is the powerful Nvidia RTX 2070 Super, which we bring to all of you through our in-depth review. And at least we expect exemplary performance, just like the RTX 2060, since in this case we have a GPU with a TU104 chip derived from the RTX 2080 that offers a performance of up to 24% compared to the previous version. This is thanks to 8 GB of GDDR6 memory, 2560 CUDA Cores and a 256-bit bus capable of giving an optimal 2K experience to the maximum graphics even 4K, with Ray Tracing and DLSS activated.

Knowing where his heart comes from, we have high hopes that it will rub the performance of a whole beast such as the RTX 2080, at a somewhat more affordable price and practically identical aesthetics.

Of course we must thank Nvidia for sending us these GPUs so quickly for our analysis.

Nvidia RTX 2070 Super technical characteristics

Unboxing

We begin this review of this Nvidia RTX 2070 Super card which can clearly be placed in the high-end due to performance and also build quality. And is that the reference models of Nvidia increasingly enjoy better quality, especially in its heatsink, exactly the same as in previous RTX, and that is not new.

That said, we are going to deal with Unboxing, which is a carbon copy of what we have seen in the RTX 2060 Super card, and also in the latest models of the manufacturer. The presentation consists of a thick, hard cardboard box with a sliding top opening. The decoration outside is already well known, a configuration of colors with gray stripes and green boxes to make the things at hand well visible.

In the back area we have nothing, while in the side areas we can see the distinctive RTX and no basic information about this GPU with a chip based on the almighty 2080. Now what we will do is open the box, to find a card inserted inside a plastic and in turn in a high-density foam mold to keep it secure. Inside we find the following elements:

  • Nvidia RTX 2070 Super Card Instruction Manual Product Warranty Card HDMI to DVI DL Adapter Cable

At least in our bundle, we found absolutely nothing else, like practically all current graphics cards. The manufacturers of monitors will already be in charge of including these. And note that it is exactly the same as that of the RTX 2080, and the truth is that this name will come out quite a bit throughout the review.

Exterior design

Nvidia RTX 2070 Super is the new creation of the high-performance GPU assembly brand, with which it intends to give a further twist to the benefits of new generation graphics cards. The launch of this coincides with the new two AMD 5700 GPUs with which the brand intended to stand up to the previous 2060 and 2070. Without a doubt it has been a well-thought-out maneuver, since in addition to taking out three new RTX cards, Nvidia will take the opportunity to lower the price of the RTX 2060, although beware, because the RTX 2070 and RTX 2080 models will be discontinued.

Nvidia has had to rush their creations, and the result is that they present a design practically traced to their younger sisters. And not for that reason it is a bad thing, since in my opinion it is a card with a very aesthetically elegant design while compact, far from those designs we customize more focused on gaming. The only difference we have in this model is that the last name "Super" has been included in the central black area after the main name.

In both color and thickness settings, we keep that space occupied by just two expansion slots and the combination of the natural silver color of the aluminum, the black for fans and the chrome central area that gives it a new look. The quality jump that Nvidia gave when leaving the turbine fans behind was very good, placing its reference products at the level of the custom ones in terms of cooling capacity.

Precisely speaking of the heatsink, we have a double fan configuration with a diameter of 85 mm in each of them. It has a total of 13 blades with a flat and simple design together with a core with a very silent double-axis bearing and which has already given it great success in other models. We will see that when installing and starting this card, the set of fans will not be at rest at any time, and that is an important difference compared to custom models, which provide an extra silence when the GPU remains below the 60 degrees.

As for the heatsink cover, it is completely made of thick aluminum in a single block molded at its corners with a smooth curvature and maintaining the natural color of aluminum with a slightly rough and matte finish. In the area of the fans we will have the typical four quite visible screws that are responsible for attaching the fans to the set.

Now we are going to turn the Nvidia RTX 2070 Super, and look at its upper area, if we consider that this would be the natural position installed in our chassis. In it, Nvidia has installed an elegant backplate also made of aluminum, quite thick, which in addition to adding extra weight to the set, also prevents it from deforming over time. It is also presented in a matte silver color as it is aluminum, with grooves in the lateral areas to improve aesthetics and also the heat exchange surface with the environment. It all adds up friends, because an anti-scratch treatment has been applied to the surface of this ductile and malleable metal.

To disassemble the heatsink we will need to disassemble the backplate completely, since it is glued to the upper area by means of a series of screws at the ends. Similarly, the system for attaching the heatsink to the GPU is based on those four screws that we see in the central area. Without a doubt a very simple system to see, but damn difficult to disassemble, due to the large number of screws and the need to pre-heat the card to be able to separate the heatsink from the electronic elements.

And we finish with the side areas, where we find a two-step system to install the “GEFORCE RTX” logo in the central area most visible to the user with green LED lighting. Otherwise, we see quite a bit of the finned heatsink inside and if we find the SLI / NVlink connector. What does this mean? That finally, we can mount multiGPU with this model.

Unlike the RTX 2060 Super, the double power connector will be in this side area, leaving the front completely covered by the aluminum block.

Ports and power connections

It still remains to give a review of the connections and ports that have this Nvidia RTX 2070 Super, which as we already anticipated, will be exactly the same as those of the RTX 2080. Come on, it is that they have not even changed their location a millimeter, and we found what next:

  • 1x HDMI 2.0b3x DisplayPort 1.41x USB Type-C

Thus supporting a total of four monitors at 4K resolution, since the three Display Ports support a maximum resolution of 8K at 60 FPS and of course 4K, while the HDMI port supports 4K resolutions at 60 FPS. And really here we can use this 4K resolution to play, because being similar to 2080, we will have more than decent FPS rates with high-level graphics.

We are also fortunate to have the USB Type-C port that was originally outlined to be used by virtual reality glasses, but which was soon discovered to be practically functioning as a normal and ordinary USB, being able to charge batteries, connect peripherals and even storage units.

And how could it be otherwise, we have a double 6 + 8-pin EPS connector to power this Nvidia RTX 2070 Super. It is exactly the same as the 2080, due to the fact that it has a TDP exactly like it and 215W. If we consider that this GPU, as we will see, has a slightly higher frequency than the 2080, but a lower core count, in the end we will have practically the same consumption. In fact, the overclocking capability should also be the same.

Finally, in the side area we have the PCIe x16 connector in version 3.0. We must remember that the PCIe 4.0 bus has already been implemented for AMD X570 chipset boards and the new AMD Ryzen CPUs with 7nm Zen2 architecture. In any case, this type of bus will not be useful for current graphics cards, since with 16 LANES in version 3.0 it is more than enough. Something curious is that in this super version, we also have a Virtual Link connector for multi GPUs, as it happened in 2080.

Nvidia RTX 2070 Super PCB, Interior and Hardware

The next section that we will develop is that of its specifications, because here this RTX 2070 Super has a lot to say, especially for having a price similar to the reference RTX 2070 in its day and incorporating the 2080 chipset, although certainly more trimmed for example the passage between 2070 and 2060 Super. We will not proceed to open the heatsink on this model.

And we start by informing that the chipset that this Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super mounts is a modified version of the TU104 of the RTX 2080, this is not a secret and this is what Nvidia shows in its specifications. It is then a 12nm Turing FinFET architecture processor that in this case runs at a frequency of 1605 MHz in base frequency and 1770 MHz in turbo mode.

A total of 2560 CUDA cores have been left activated in this processor, compared to 2304 from the previous RTX 2070, along with 320 Tensor cores and 40 RT cores. They will be responsible for processing the entire ray tracing system in real time (Ray Tracing) and DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling). Remember that for example the RTX 2080 has 2944 CUDA Cores, so it is quite a drastic reduction. And supporting this chip we have a L1 cache of 2560 KB and a L2 cache of 4096 KB, figures higher than we had before in the case of L1. All this, generates a capacity of 64 ROPs and 184 TMUs, at speeds of 7 Giga Rays / second, 72 TFLOPS and 9 + 9 TOPS in FP32 and INT32 respectively, which are much higher figures than in the previous 2070, for example, with its 60 TFLOPS.

In the graphic memory section we do not have too many changes, to say the least. Those 8 GB GDDR6 have been kept working at a speed of 14 Gbps and a frequency of 7000 MHz. The bus also remains exactly the same, at 256 bits and delivering a speed of 448 GB / s.

Seeing these characteristics on paper, there is no doubt that we are going to experience an increase in FPS and tests on this Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super card compared to the normal 2070. But a priori, this improvement is not going to be as great as, for example, the one that has benefited the RTX 2060 Super, surpassing even the one that has the same chipset, the 2070. But as we will see below, we are going to be really close This is mainly due to the optimization of drivers over time and improvements in games.

Test bench and performance test

Next, we are going to perform the entire battery of performance tests both synthetic and in games, to this Nvidia RTX 2070 Super. Our test bench consists of the following elements:

TESTING BENCH

Processor:

Intel Core i9-9900K

Base plate:

MSI MEG Z390 ACE

Memory:

G.Skill Sniper X 16 GB @ 3600 MHz

Heatsink

Corsair H100i RGB Platinum SE

HDD

ADATA Ultimate SU750 SSD

Graphic card

Nvidia RTX 2070 Super

Power supply

Be Quiet! Dark Power Pro 11 1000W

Monitor

Viewsonic VX3211 4K mhd

All the synthetic tests and tests have been carried out with the filters as they come in the configuration of each program. The tests consist of tests that run in various resolutions, such as Full HD and 4K, and also to test performance in Ray Tracing in the case of the Port Royal test. We have run all of them on the Windows 10 Pro operating system in its 1903 version with the latest version drivers available for this graphics card (they have provided us with new ones before launching them for sale).

What are we looking for in these tests?

First, the best possible image quality. The most important value for us is the average FPS (Frames per second), the higher the number of FPS the more fluid the game will go. To slightly differentiate the quality, we leave you a table to assess the quality in FPS based on the quantity we get in each game and resolution.

FRAMES PER SECOND
Frames Per Second (FPS) Gameplay
Less than 30 FPS Limited
30 ~ 40 FPS Playable
40 ~ 60 FPS Good
Greater than 60 FPS Fairly Good or Excellent

Benchmarks and synthetic tests

For benchmark tests we will use the following titles:

  • 3DMark Fire Strike normal3DMark Fire Strike UltraTime SpyPort Royal (RT) VRMARK

Game testing

After the synthetic tests, we will proceed to evaluate the real performance in games, thus having a closer guide of what our GPU will be able to deliver under DirectX 11, 12 and OPEN GL

The tests will be carried out at the three most used resolutions in gaming, we refer to Full HD (1920 x 1080p), QHD or 2K (2560 x 1440p) and UHD or 4K (3840 x 2160p). In this way, we will have a complete range of results to be able to compare them with other GPUs. For each of the games, we have kept the automatic settings selected in each and for each resolution.

  • Final Fantasy XV, standard, TAA, DirectX 12DOOM, Ultra, TAA, Open GL 4.5 Deus EX Mankind Divided, Alto, Anisotropico x4, DirectX 11Far Cry 5, Alto, TAA, DirectX 12Metro Exodus, Alto, Anisotropico x16, DirectX 12 (with and without RT) Shadow of the Tomb Rider, Alto, TAA + Anisotropic x4, DirectX 12 (with and without DLSS)

And here we have a pleasant surprise, and that is that in many of the titles this card also outperforms for example the RTX 2080 Founders Edition. This did not happen in the synthetic tests, but it did at the moment of truth. This is due in part to the vast improvement in drivers for these cards, and also to game updates at this time. In any case, there are the results.

Gaming performance with DLSS + Ray Tracing enabled

We have carried out a second test on the Shadow of the Tomb Rider and Metro Exodus games, which allow using the new technology of the Nvidia RTX to compare the FPS obtained. The rest of the graphic options have been kept exactly the same.

1920 x 1080 (Full HD) 2560 x 1440 (WQHD) 3840 x 2160 (4K)
Metro Exodus (without RTX) 86 FPS 66 FPS 40 FPS
Exodus meter (with RT + DLSS) 73 FPS 56 FPS 39 FPS
Shadow of the Tomb Rider (without RTX) 125 FPS 95 FPS 54 FPS
Shadow of the Tomb Rider (with DLSS) 125 FPS 102 FPS 69 FPS

Overclocking

As always, we have overclocked this Nvidia RTX 2070 Super to see where it is able to go with a rise in laps using the MSI Afterburner software.

Metro Exodus (without RTX) Stock @ Overclock
1920 x 1080 (Full HD) 86 FPS 94 FPS
2560 x 1440 (WQHD) 66 FPS 72 FPS
3840 x 2160 (4K) 40 FPS 44 FPS

We have reached a clock speed of 1860 MHz for the processor clock, with peaks close to 1980 MHz, and we have increased the memory clock to 7600 MHz. With this configuration we have obtained good system stability and it is also up to where we have seen substantial performance improvements. Remember that in each unit these modifications can have a different effect.

Temperatures and consumption

In addition to measuring both its temperature with the HWiNFO program by stressing the GPU with FurMark, we have also simultaneously measured the power consumption of the entire equipment. And while we were doing it, we have taken a few thermal captures with the card at full capacity for a few hours with an ambient temperature of around 24 ° C.

For this case and with a TDP like the one with this 215 W card, we have obtained a fairly low consumption in stock, of only 58W from all the equipment. Increasing the demands with Furmark we have slightly exceeded 300W, entering perfectly within normal limits, and demonstrating once again that RTX are GPUs with brutal consumption efficiency. As an extra, we have also applied intensive stress to the CPU to reach 368W of consumption.

Final words and conclusion about Nvidia RTX 2060 Super

In view of the results we have obtained with this Nvidia RTX 2070 Super, we can confirm that the performance increase has also been evident. And it has exceeded in some titles the performance of the RTX 2080 on the day of its official release. Let's understand that the drivers have improved a lot and the games have also undergone updates, but nobody can deny the great performance we have.

Nvidia leave no doubt that this card is based on the TU104 chip with some important cuts, in its graphic cores. However, the performance of the 8 GB of memory is exactly the same, and its overclocking capacity is quite acceptable to be a reference model, obtaining about 1860 MHz in core and 7600 MHz in memory. Getting about 8 more FPS on Metro Exodus in Full HD without even increasing the voltage.

Balancing performance on games tested to high or ultra quality, 100 FPS is virtually assured at 2K resolutions, while we get closer to 60 FPS in 4K. What we mean is that, if you plan to play only in 1080p, save money on another inferior card, because this beast gives much more.

We recommend our guide to the best graphics cards on the market

As for the exterior design, because we do not have great news, being a heatsink exactly like that of the other Founders, although with chrome elements. In this sense, we recognize that the 85mm dual fan system performs perfectly, but it is time that Nvidia implements the way to stop these fans when the card is not working.

With this Nvidia RTX 2070 Super, the manufacturer is practically competing with itself, and if at all with the AMD Radeon VII to mention the competition. And in this case it will go on the market for a price of $ 529, which will be slightly higher than the RTX 2070 in its day, which is very positive. Recall that the RTX 2060 Super has increased the price compared to its predecessor.
