Nvidia Shield TV is updated to its Shield Experience 5.2 version

This software brings improvements and new features, as well as updates to the Plex application, including live TV, DVR and the ability to write to network attached storage devices (NAS).

Plex in combination with SHIELD TV is the perfect multimedia solution: all user movies, TV series, music and photo collections will be stored locally, elegantly organized and displayed on the big screen and on other screens via SHIELD TV.

SHIELD TV is the only device that is both a Plex client and a media server, making it the only low-power solution capable of performing all of these functions: watching live TV, scheduling a recording, playing that recording from locally and serve recordings to be played on various devices over the internet.

The premium Plex Pass service also brings with it a number of unique features such as Plex Cloud, offline playback, parental controls, automatic upload of photos from mobile devices, as well as automatic photo tags and more. You'll find more information on the Nvidia blog.

But there's more: To celebrate this launch, for a limited time, new SHIELD TV purchases will come with a free six-month Plex Pass subscription (€ 29.94 / £ 23.94 value).

The distributors participating in this promotion are PCComponentes and Amazon España.

Additional information about Plex, as well as new features and functionalities enabled by SHIELD Experience Upgrade 5.2.

Write to Network Storage (NAS)

Nvidia Shield now supports recording content to network storage devices via Plex, allowing users to record TV shows and movies directly to network connected memory (NAS) via Plex. SHIELD owners can continue writing to local storage, adopted storage, and external storage drives.

Watch and record live TV with Plex

Now with SHIELD TV and a Plex Pass, users will be able to watch and record live TV on SHIELD in up to 1080 resolution with 5.1 surround sound.

SHIELD with Plex is a one-of-a-kind DVR solution. With this release, SHIELD becomes:

  • The first streaming media player compatible with Plex Live TV Single player capable of browsing and recording TV content in a simple and functional interface.

And since SHIELD is the industry's only client and server Plex device, you can save TV content directly to SHIELD and then stream these programs to any device, anywhere in the world, all with a fraction of the power consumption and cost of other media server options. Please note that DVR and Live TV functionality will be launched in different EU countries in the coming weeks, starting with the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy.

Connect a USB tuner for Plex Live TV

NVIDIA and Plex work together to support USB tuners on SHIELD, including support for Hauppauge's WinTV USB dual tuner.

Additional updates

Additional updates in this release include network storage directory and connectivity enhancements, Wi-Fi performance enhancements, and experience enhancements for SHIELD remote control and SHIELD controller.

NVIDIA continues to improve SHIELD since its launch, not only for SHIELD (2017) owners, but also for existing SHIELD users. All the updates mentioned above will be extended to everyone. SHIELD Experience Upgrade 5.2 will be released to customers on a continuous basis in the coming weeks starting today.
