NVM Express today announced the pending availability of the new NVMe Management Interface (NVMe-MI) specification. The NVMe-MI 1.1 release standardizes NVMe box management, provides the ability to access NVMe-MI functionality in-band, and offers new management features for multiple implementations of NVMe subsystem solid state drives.

NVMe-MI 1.1 specification is now ready

NVM Express Inc completed technical work on NVMe-MI 1.1, and the specification is in the process of ratification with wide availability expected in 60 days. New management features give NVMe end users and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) more control and flexibility. The NVMe-MI 1.1 specification defines the essential management elements requested by the growing NVMe ecosystem. For example, there was no defined standard to manage NVMe boxes, and now we have a standard that companies can assign.

The in-band NVMe-MI feature enables operating systems and applications to channel NVMe-MI commands through an NVMe controller. The primary use of in-band NVMe-MI is to enable operating systems and applications to achieve parity with the management capabilities that are available out-of-band with a motherboard management controller (BMC). NVMe-MI 1.1 extends management capabilities for NVM Express devices by enabling box management for NVMe storage arrays (such as JBOF), and provides unified management for device subsystems with multiple NVMe devices.

The types of NVMe devices that are being developed, and NVMe use cases continue to expand, as NVMe gains popularity in the industry. NVMe's management interface is evolving with the release of version 1.1 of the specification, to meet management needs, and to reduce the total cost of ownership associated with these new types of NVMe devices and use cases.
