NZXT HUE 2 Ambient V2 Lighting Kit is the new evolution that brings us the brand of its ambient RGB light system oriented to the installation in the rear area of the monitors. A whole system with a two-channel microcontroller and up to 8 LED strips that will give us a sufficient extension to illuminate the entire back of a monitor over 32 inches. The system of course is manageable with CAM software with infinite animations and intelligent control.
We thank NZXT for their trust in us by transferring the product to us with its complete pack to carry out this analysis.
NZXT HUE 2 Ambient V2 technical characteristics
Unboxing and accessories
We started by doing this Unboxing that undoubtedly has a crumb, due to the amount of accessories we will have in our hands. All good news for those who, like me, like to DIY and assemble things.
We have a presentation consisting of a white box with a photograph of the NZXT HUE 2 Ambient V2 system completely mounted in the back of a monitor. Even if we see 6 LEDs, quiet, but inside there are a total of 8, making it very clear at the back of the box.
The first thing we see when opening the box is the microcontroller, which comes inside a cardboard mold, which in turn is a box where the LED strips are stored. Below, we will have the other accessories.
Let's see then this great list of elements:
- NZXT HUE 2 Ambient V2 microcontroller 8 LED strips: 4x 300mm and 4x 250mm Two 90 degree angles Two 150mm connecting cables 12V DC power supply with 4 power adapters 2.5 meter Micro-USB cable Wet and dry wipes for cleaning The monitor 4 Velcro strips Installation manual and configuration suggestion
In our case, we have the pack suitable for monitors up to 32 inches, although we have already warned that, of the 8 strips, we will have two left over, so it still supports larger monitors.
This microcontroller supports a total of two lighting channels with up to 4 LED strips in each. This means that in a single channel we will not be able to install the 8 strips, so keep that in mind guys.
The dimensions of this element are 76 mm wide, 100 long and 15 mm thick, so we are facing a typical 2.5-inch mechanical disk configuration, in case we want to install these strips inside or outside the PC, which, of course, we could also do, although needing a hole to remove the USB cable.
In this sense, we would have liked the system to include a USB cable for internal connections on the motherboard, although for this, we already have the HUE 2 RGB Lighting Kit for PC with 4 channels.
In the front area we find all the available connections, which are the two lighting channels with a 4-pin connector, the Micro-USB port for software management from our PC, and the 12 DC power connector.
Of course we will have available the two 4-pin adapters for these channels, which will interconnect the strips with the NZXT HUE 2 Ambient V2 microcontroller .
In the lateral areas we do not have too much to describe. We only have perforations to allow ventilation, and yes, a green LED that indicates when the controller is operational.
And in the back area what we have is the support system, which consists of four small rubber feet and two rectangular holes to glue two of the 4 velcro strips for vertical fastening.
Installation and operation
NZXT HUE 2 Ambient V2 is designed so that we use the two channels with 3 or 4 LED strips joined by the two corners. So we would have for example a channel with two consecutive 300 mm strips and a corner that would join another 250 mm strip. And the other channel identically, at least this has been our case for installation on a 32-inch monitor.
The 300mm strips have 10 addressable LED lamps, and the 250mm ones logically with 8 of them. In the CAM software these LEDs will be fully customizable individually if we so choose.
In each of the corners we will see an arrow at each end. This is indicating to us that the pin that marks + 5V must coincide with the direction of this arrow. In any case, the corners will not give us the way we put them, since we just have to make sure that all the strips are facing up.
Here we have a small example of the assembly carried out. What if we must take into account when connecting the first LED strip to the controller, is that the arrow on the cable will have to go, this time aligned with + 5V. In any case, nothing happens if we make a mistake, since we will have a protection system that will not damage any component.
Something that we will also have to keep in mind is that, when making the first connection to the computer, the lights may not turn on correctly. This has happened to us by having NZXT CAM already installed without the corresponding driver. What we will have to do is uninstall the program, restart and reinstall it, and thus we will have no problem. We recommend downloading the latest version available from the website and also installing the HUE + driver available in the list that the software shows us in the installation wizard.
NZXT CAM software
After having NZXT CAM installed on our PC, it is time to get the most out of this ambient lighting kit. Each channel is presented to us independently and with the possibility of managing it independently. But what we are going to do is configure the " Ambient " mode so that the light reacts to the colors that are shown on the screen.
For this we go to the SMART section and select Ambient. A small assistant will guide us in what we will have to do so that the lighting direction coincides with the monitor depending on how we have installed it. All very intuitive and simple.
If we prefer, we can go to other customization menus to place the effects we want on the bands or even customize each light. We have a lot to choose from and everything is very interesting.
Something that we must take into account is that, when playing a video clip, if it has the typical black bands above and below, the corresponding lights will remain off. It is something that we can intuit, since the purpose of ambient light is to create a more inverted environment for the viewer, and if the screen has black borders, it would not be consistent to show lights on.
Final words and conclusion about NZXT HUE 2 Ambient V2
Well, we have already given a good review of this new NZXT HUE 2 Ambient V2 that brings us one of the best gaming brands. The experience has been magnificent, if you really want a system that gives you more immersion on your gaming screen, this system is the most recommended by far. In addition, on ultra-wide curved screens, the experience must be multiplied. In addition, the power of the lighting is far superior to any that comes integrated into the monitor itself.
The accessory pack is extremely complete, with up to 8 LED strips that will give us plenty of length for all monitors and with the possibility of gluing them and setting their orientation with the corners. The mounting system is very clean and not difficult to do, and we will also have magnetic fastening to stick it on the chassis of our PC. We only miss an internal USB connector because we wanted to put lighting inside, but as we say, NZXT already has specific equipment for this.
We recommend our guide to the best monitors on the market
The customization possibilities are very complete thanks to NZXT CAM, but the most useful option we will get if we install the lighting on the monitor is in the ambient mode. We also do not forget the possibility of synchronizing it with other NZXT systems such as the H400i, H500i chassis etc.
Finally, NZXT HUE 2 Ambient V2 can be found on the official website for about $ 130.89 in its full version with 8 LED strips. Of course there will be cheaper versions with fewer accessories. It is a system that has practically no rivals in the market, and it is somewhat expensive, but for all those who look for backlighting on their desktop it is the best.
