7.1 sound has been with us for some time but as we say the technology is updated more often than our peripherals. If you have your favorite headphones or stereo or 5.1 speakers and would like to give them a technological boost, what Ozone brings you with BoomBox may interest you, let's see it!

The Spanish Ozone we like to have well-stocked in terms of peripherals and gaming products is concerned. This time brings us Ozone BoomBox, an external sound card via USB 2.0 that connects us to the world of 7.1.

Unboxing and design

Ozone BoomBox comes in a matte-finish cardboard box with glossy details that highlight device photos, company logos, or model information. Its small dimensions already make us think about the portability with which the device is raised.

On the back of the box we find again and like on the sides the Ozone logo with the name of the product. Apart from this we can also read an outstanding quote:

Experience the best virtual 7.1 sound just by connecting your Ekho X90 or any headphone with 3.5 jack port to external USB sound card and enjoy the best quality audio.

Below we have more technical information in various languages that explains that BoomBox is an external sound card that transforms stereo audio into virtual 7.1 surround. Finally, at the bottom of the back we find the Ozone hashtag and the Ozone BoomBox web link.

The total content of the box is summarized in:

Ozone BoomBox design

The device itself has the peculiarity of being very small. It is made of black plastic and is very light in weight. At the top we find the Ozone logo and the on and off button with the logo also stamped on it. Both are matte white.

Then on both sides we find various controllers. On the left is the slider button to mute or activate the microphone of our headphones if available. Next to the right we have two volume controllers for the speakers / headphones and microphone, both separately.

There is also the pleasant detail that in the Ozone BoomBox itself we can find clamping clips integrated into its back. It is extremely practical both to attach it to other cables that we have on the table and to place it on a high surface.

Finally and going on to talk about the cable, it is very resistant and has a length of 2m. This allows us a lot of freedom to place the Ozone BoomBox in any area near our workspace or game since it supposes an added distance to the length of our headphones. The cable is sheathed in braided fabric fiber and its thickness will make it difficult to tangle. At the opposite end we find a USB 2.0 port and accompanying the cable we have a velcro loop to keep it tidy.

Putting Ozone BoomBox into use

Here we turn to practical impressions of the device. The first thing to note is that for it to work properly you must download the software from the Ozone website. This is very important since otherwise even if you connect your headphones to Ozone BoomBox you will not notice any difference. Once you have downloaded the program you have installed it, you will need to restart the computer, so it is when you are back that we can start the party.

Software operation

When we open the program, we receive a pop-up window that informs us that to access the advanced options for both the speakers and the microphone, we must right-click on the icon. The rest of the options to regulate the general volume, right or left are in the main panel itself. Also, in the top menu if we click on the rotation icon we can see three default modes: Hi-Fi, movie and music. Selecting each of them we will notice differences in the way we receive the sound and in turn there is the option of creating custom sound modes.

Annotations

Well, in anticipation of clueless people who panic if the first sound is strange, there are certain things you should keep in mind. We have been fiddling with the software and there are options that have given us very good results such as:

On Speakers:

  • Enable virtual 7.1 speakers on your tab Enable Xear Surround Max. Environment effects: we can customize the perception of the size of the room and also the type of environment we are in (cave, auditorium, open spaces…).

In microphone:

  • Ozone singFX: allows you to set the microphone echo or add "magic voice" filters to change our tone and have a laugh. Mic Boost: Optimizes the sound of the microphone.

When making any of these changes, the default profile that we have modified will have changed to "Manual", so that with the "+" icon we can add it to the list with a custom name. We can also delete it later. Technical options present in both speakers / headphones and microphones are:

  • Customize the sampling frequency between 44.1 KHz and 48 KHz. Regulate the sound separately from the microphone and speakers.

Final words and conclusions about Ozone BoomBox

It is a good alternative on occasions when the only sound card you have on your computer is the one that comes with the motherboard or the one you have is already somewhat old. This often occurs with low-end or mid-range laptops or desktops. If this is your case and want to make an improvement when you are low on budget, Ozone BoomBox may be the alternative you need.

What convinces us most about Ozone BoomBox is both its software and its versatility.

After installing the software and adjusting it to your liking, it is practically impossible not to reach the configuration point that best suits you. On the other hand, it is true that Ozone BoomBox does not work miracles, but it does a great job for its € 24.90.

For that price it is difficult to find good 7.1 headphones with a convincing sound, and the fact that this device allows us to have 7.1 not only in headphones but any other audio equipment with a 3.5 jack is a great advantage.
