Ozone brings us its new Ozone Rage X40 headphones, a very interesting headset for those who are looking for something cheap and with good features and surprising sound quality. It incorporates virtual 7.1 sound through its 50mm speakers and its USB connection. With the manufacturer's software we can activate effects and this 7.1 function if we wish. Let's see how these helmets have behaved in our analysis. ahead!

First of all, we must thank Ozone for the trust in us and the transfer of the product for its analysis.

Ozone Rage X40 technical characteristics

Unboxing and design

Ozone is always used to creating new peripherals with very interesting features and also at a price that is difficult to beat by rivals. These Ozone Rage X40 are added to the family along with the recently released Ekho X40 and Rage X60, and also at a practically equal price, to have several options in this competitive entry range.

The presentation has practically not changed to what the brand is used to. That is why it is a very thin and flexible cardboard box, we must say with its own gray and red colors.

On the front we find a full-size photograph of the headset with its model, and on the back we have another photo next to the product information table.

We open the box and we have some Ozone Rage X40 well coupled in a cardboard mold with central support and rear compartment for the extremely long braided USB cable. This will be the interface of connection of these helmets to our PC.

Inside we find, in addition to the main product, a small installation instruction book. Nothing we don't know to date.

The brand takes the opportunity to increase its range of headphones with equipment of standard dimensions of the circumaural type and a really light weight with only 362 grams, so it will not be any problem, in principle, for continued use for hours with good comfort.

The exterior finishes are matte black hard plastic for the headband and have a slightly rough finish, just like the drive casing. The manufacturer does not have more versions in different colors.

In the extendable joint of these Ozone Rage X40 we can see how the headband is reinforced inside by a steel chassis. This provides rigidity to the set to prevent it from opening over time. In addition, the finish is quite acceptable and of a brushed metal type. The extension of both sides is about 35 mm on each side.

In this joint we have no possibility to rotate the pavilions to rest them on the ground horizontally. In turn, the fastening of the canopies to the frame, consists of two hinges that allow a slight movement to be able to adjust them to our cranial structure.

We will now take a closer look at the headband. It is a single bridge structure with a central plastic area and a soft foam covering with a synthetic leather finish, we would say nylon. This area does not stand out for its great thickness or size, so the protection for our head will only be acceptable.

We consider the head restraint to be correct. The headband provides fair and not excessive pressure that allows us to make sharp turns and be able to look down without the headset moving from the site, partly due to its low weight. The superior protection is indeed a fair thing for comfort, on the contrary, to the canopies, which are really large and quite comfortable.

We move on to the most important area for our head, which are the ear pavilions. It is a circumaural design headset in which we find very thick pads and with very good finishes. They are filled with quite soft and adjustable foam and completely covered in synthetic leather.

Ozone Rage X40 features a completely round design and the ears fit perfectly inside the canopy. Inside, we have a thin cloth on top of the plastic that protects the speaker from our access. During the time we've been wearing them, they don't seem to be too hot, at least at an ambient temperature of about 20 degrees. Also the insulation to the outside is surprisingly good.

In the outer area we have plastic finishes and a metal mesh in the inner area, which should see the red illumination of these helmets.

In this case, the microphone is not retractable or foldable, it only has a highly flexible pole that allows it to be adjusted in orientation wherever we want. In any case, we will not be able to hide it too much, since, in tight turns, it tends to return to its stretched natural shape.

Internal features and benefits

The Ozone Rage X40 have wired connectivity of USB 2.0 type, without the possibility of analog connection. That is why the DAC is located inside the helmets themselves. The cable length extends a total of 2.10 meters and has a protective mesh on the outside.

Inside these domes of a diameter equal to 105 mm, and which are closed to the outside by the external part, two 50 mm diameter drives with good power are hidden, judging by the excellent volume they are capable of achieving without distortion.. Ozone Rage X40 is capable of providing us with a response frequency of between 20 Hz and 20, 000 Hz, which has been the audible spectrum of the human being. It has an impedance of 32 Ω and a sensitivity of 108 dB ± 3 dB.

We must not forget that they include virtual 7.1 surround sound, which we can activate through the software dedicated to them, and which we will see later.

We have the microphone located in the left pavilion, as usual. We have a 4 × 1.5 mm membrane size with a mid-level impedance at 2.2 kΩ. The sensitivity is -48 ± 3 dB, and it will offer us a response frequency of between 50 Hz and 10, 000 Hz. The collection pattern will be omnidirectional.

Also in the left earpiece we will find the controls for volume, microphone and lighting. To modify we have a typical wheel-shaped potentiometer, which works quite well and between a well-defined setting. We must say that when we put it to the maximum, we notice some noise in the speakers.

For the microphone we also have a mute button just below. The micro will be on when its end is lit red, and it will be off when this light is inert. If we keep pressing this same button for more than a second, we will be turning the lighting of the Ozone Rage X40 on or off.

The lighting in question only consists of the brand logo in red. We will not be able to manage it through software, neither in color nor in animations. We must say that very successful, fixed, simple and elegant, no frills or extras.

Software and customization

We can intuit at first that, being a headset with USB connectivity, we will have backup software for its configuration, and so it is friends.

Of course, you must also consider that it is quite basic and only allows strictly essential controls. We have an equalizer that customizes in 5 frequency ranges and also with the possibility of creating 4 different profiles. If we prefer, we can go to the effects section to have four of them predefined, although none is absolutely for nothing, because they are too exaggerated.

In another section we have the possibility to configure the microphone gain, although we do not enable and disable it. And finally we have the virtual sound 7.1 section, in which we can even configure the situation of the 3D virtual speakers to adapt them to our tastes. This sound is quite successful, although not at the level of the best and we prefer to maintain the stereo experience, which is very good.

Sound experience and conclusion about Ozone Rage X40

Well we have been testing these Ozone Rage X40 for several days to give our verdict about them. Of course we have listened to music at 320 Kbps, movies and we have also played the odd hour with them. For the price they have, the sound quality has surprised us very positively, and also the recording quality of the microphone.

As for sound, we have speakers that support enough volume, but without reaching such power that we can not support them. The balance between treble, mids and bass is very good and neither stands out more than the other. Another advantage for some is the possibility of activating virtual 7.1 surround sound in them, which is quite successful, although not at the level of the superior ones in the range.

The configuration The insulation from the outside is quite good and also the sound does not hear anything bottled despite being a closed cupola almost entirely. When we turn the volume up to maximum, we notice a small base noise in the speakers.

We recommend reading the best headphones on the market

We have also tested the microphone with recordings in Audacity and it is very good, with very little noise and clear sound in both treble and bass, so it does a great job. What is less advantageous about it is its exterior design, which we have no way to hide or completely remove. We doubt the durability of this flexible rod.

Let's move on to the design of the Ozone Rage X40. We have on the one hand a really small weight that allows them to be adjusted for long hours, but the upper area of the headband is not too padded. On the other hand, the pavilions are very comfortable, with quite large pads and that fit well.

Ozone Rage X40 we will find it in the market for a price of 39.89 euros when it is officially commercialized, which is a very attractive price for what it offers us.
