PC Master Race or iMac? That is the question that many advanced users and many imaging professionals ask themselves. How many times have we heard that a Mac is much better than a PC for the tasks of designing and editing images and video… Is there really any truth to it? The guys from slrlounge have got down to work and have faced the PC Master Race with the best iMac on the market in a terrain supposedly favorable to Apple. Don't miss it!

Test environment and features iMac and PC Master Race

For their tests with Adobe Lightroom, slrlounge has used 1, 121 photos in the demanding, high-quality RAW format and have run the tests up to 3 times to ensure the accuracy of the results obtained in the laboratory. The studio has assembled an entire PC Master Race piece by piece and pitted it against the iMac 27 ″ with a 5K retina display, Apple's most powerful AIO device. The specifications of both teams are as follows:

iMac 27 ″

27-inch iMac with Retina 5K display

Intel i7 Quad-Core 4.00Ghz

32GB 1867Mhz DDR3 SDRAM

1TB SSD storage

AMD Radeon R9 M395X 4GB

Final Price: $ 4, 431

PC Master Race

Intel i7-5960X @ 3.00Ghz overclocked to 4.5Ghz ($ 1025)

ASUS ROG RAMPAGE V EXTREME ($ 480)

64GB RAM ($ 350)

EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti ($ 630)

Corsair Hydro H110 Water Cooler ($ 120)

EIZO 27 ″ FlexScan IPS Display 2560 × 1440 ($ 1000)

Results obtained iMac vs PC Master Race

Importing the files

The first test consists of importing the 1, 121 images directly to the SSD storage of each of the computers.

PC Master Race - 12.51 seconds

Apple iMac - 26.81 seconds

We observed a clear time difference in favor of the PC Master Race which took less than half to import all the images.

Lightroom Smart Previews

The second test involves measuring the time it takes both teams to generate previews of each of the 1, 121 imported images. In both cases, 2048p resolution and medium quality have been used.

PC Master Race - 19 Minutes and 22 seconds

Apple iMAC - 26 Minutes and 01 Seconds

Again the PC Master Race wets the iMac's ear, it is fair to say that this time the difference is not so bulky.

Lightroom picture-by-picture development module

The third test carried out consists of measuring the time it takes both teams to fully load 114 RAW images inside the module.

PC Master Race - 114 images in 1 Minute and 10.3 seconds

Apple iMac - 114 images in 1 Minute and 58.1 seconds

Another victory for the PC Master Race, this time we have again a very large difference that borders on approximately 80%.

Create Lightroom panoramas

We come to the last test, this time it consists of creating a panorama from 5 different photos. These 5 photos were taken with a Canon 5DS in RAW format with a resolution of 50 megapixels and with HDR. The test consists of joining them all and creating a panorama in DNG format.

PC Master Race - 12 seconds to preview and 59.32 seconds to complete DNG file

WE RECOMMEND YOUOWC Launches Memory Kits of Up to 128GB for iMac 2019

Apple iMac - 28.5 seconds to preview and 1 minute 31 seconds to complete the DNG file

Again the PC Master Race beats the iMac, this time the differences are 57.9% in the preview and 35% in the union of the 5 photos.

Conclusion iMac vs PC Master Race

The results obtained speak for themselves, a PC Master Race made by pieces is capable of getting the ear of the most powerful and equivalent price iMac wet, as if that were not enough, the tests have been done in a territory supposedly much more favorable for Apple such as the creation and editing of images. It would be interesting if more tests had been introduced with other software but I am very afraid that the results would not have been much different.

So from now on if someone tells you that a Mac is much better than a PC equivalent in price, you already have the necessary evidence to debate and convince him that it is not, of course, the latter is sometimes more complicated than it seems ?
