Polaris and Radeon R9 490X to be announced at the end of May at an event in Macau

AMD is gearing up to counter the arrival of the GeForce GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 with the launch of its new graphics cards based on the Polaris architecture later this month in Macau. AMD would have already sent invitations to the main media for their attendance at the Polaris presentation event between May 26 and 31

Polaris is AMD's new GCN architecture to bring to life a new generation of graphics cards that will compete against Nvidia Pascal. Polaris should have the advantage of its 14nm FinFET manufacturing process over the 16nm FinFET used at Pascal. The ultimate exponent will be the Ellesmere GPU that will bring the Radeon R9 490X to life which is supposed to offer slightly better performance than the GeForce GTX 980Ti.

If the latter is true, the new AMD architecture would be inferior in performance to Pascal and AMD could not compete against you against the new generation of high-end graphics cards from Nvidia. However, there is still nothing confirmed so we have to wait to see what it is capable of.
