- Conclusion about which MSI Max-Q gaming Notebook to buy
Today we have for you all a somewhat more special article, one in which we will see which MSI Max-Q gaming Notebook to buy. Gaming notebooks with an ultra-slim design are undoubtedly the benchmark for all manufacturers, and the Taiwanese hardware manufacturer knows this perfectly. For this reason, it offers us a large number of models in its GS gaming series for practically all budgets.
Index of contents
We have taken the task of making a comparison as complete as possible on models with 8th and 9th generation Intel processors and Nvidia graphics cards so that you do not have problems knowing which is the best option. In addition, we will explain the main advantages of laptops with this type of design, their drawbacks and we will see in detail how to interpret the nomenclature of the MSI series of laptops.
MSI GS Stealth gaming laptops: what advantages do they have
Precisely in this article we will only deal with in-depth study of the MSI Stealth series of notebooks, which are presented entirely with an ultra-thin design, also called ultrabooks due to the combination of high portability and incredible hardware features.
It is incredible how far we have come from miniaturization today to introduce dream hardware in small devices less than 2 cm thick, and that counting on the screen. A hardware that many times far exceed that of our desktop computer, to show some of our reviews of notebooks with 9th generation CPUs.
The main advantages provided by the MSI GS Stealth Series are clear: high portability, elegance, energy efficiency and power.
Portability and elegance with tiny frames
If we look for a few years forward, we will see that the design of current notebooks is far from being that of yesteryear. Now we have practically all cases made entirely of aluminum chassis, with impeccable finishes and brilliant bevels and great elegance.
The advantages of aluminum are evident, it is a very ductile and malleable metal with which you can make countless figures and finishes, and it is also extremely light. On the other hand, it also provides high rigidity with just a millimeter thickness and good heat conductivity, which in itself improves cooling. It practically surpasses plastic in every way and of course it is the trend to follow. Do not worry because all the products that we will see here are made of aluminum.
Similarly, having such a slim laptop gives us great possibilities when we can move around with it. This was unthinkable before for a portable gaming device, but thanks to the development of the hardware and having incredibly thin screens and frames less than 10 mm makes the compactness perfect.
The useful surface of Max-Q MSI laptops almost always exceeds 80%, if we translate it into measurements, we can have a laptop, for example, of 396 x 259 mm when its 17-inch screen measures 380 x 210 mm.
Energy efficiency and power
Both concepts go hand in hand, because always with greater power, more energy consumption. Faced with this, hardware manufacturers are creating smaller and smaller devices, with transistor manufacturing processes less than 14nm with a single goal, to gain power at lower consumption.
The rule is simple, the smaller a transistor, the less energy it will need, but it will not stop doing the same function. Remember that current electronics are based on transistors. This translates into being able to introduce more of them in less space, increasing the power and consuming the same or less.
This is especially important for a laptop, since one of the big concerns today is to obtain autonomies of several hours in ridiculously powerful equipment. Because, while electronics have come a long way, the truth is that batteries are not so much and it is something that really worries the user.
How does the ultra fine design affect autonomy and cooling?
Precisely in the thread of the above, we must talk more about current batteries and how it influences having such a narrow laptop design.
Autonomies of about 8 hours (in the best case)
And in this case the size does matter, because the smaller the space, the smaller the battery size will fit, and this translates into fewer cells and milliamps (mAh). We hope that one day the graphene batteries will arrive faster to charge and with greater autonomy, although much more expensive.
It is true that Lithium batteries are quite efficient and are capable of storing enough energy, but the power of the hardware is undeniable, and no matter how hard manufacturers try, one of these laptops will offer us an autonomy of about 8 hours at sumo. We talk about these powerful gaming laptops, of course. Not bad, but that will be at best, because if we start playing with a graphics card and CPU to the maximum, we will hardly reach two hours, although it is endemic in all gaming laptops unfortunately.
Cooling that works surprisingly well
And refrigeration is also somewhat of a problem, although we must admit that MSI does it very well, with its Max-Q systems, much better than other manufacturers, and this is demonstrated by viewing laptop reviews here, in our "PR" house.. The less space there is, the less air can circulate through the heat pipes, and consequently, less heat transfer to the outside of the equipment.
But the MSI team has been quite smart in designing their system for the Stealth range, called Cooler Boost Trinity + IT. It has replaced the typical two-fan system with one of three, smaller and less noisy. In this way, the air flow in the 6 or 7 heatpipes is maximized and the outlet surface is considerably larger than normal. By having more copper heatpipes, they will be able to collect more heat and spread it over the entire surface.
Knowing the hierarchy of MSI laptops
Given the main advantages and disadvantages of this MSI Stealth series that we discussed in the article, it is worth knowing a little how the brand names its laptops. Because knowing the different parts of the model nomenclature, we are going to know a lot about the laptop without even looking at specifications.
Let's see it in a small scheme:
The GS series is the one that concerns us in this article, which differs from the rest for being the family of ultra thin laptops with the best performance of the brand, that is, they are ultra portable gaming laptops. But we will also have the Titan series (T) as a top range, the Raider series (R), the Leopard series (P) and the most economical series (L) as the main ones. But there are still two more series, the GF and the GV with no associated proper name.
As for the inches of the screen, in this case we will only find variants with 6 and 7, corresponding to 15.6 and 17.3 inches. Similarly, we will focus only on the version of model 3 and 5, which are those that install 8th and 9th generation processors from Intel and therefore the most current.
After the main name, there is another series of three characters, the first of which reflects the generation of the processor, which of course begins in the 6th until it reaches the 9th and last generation. Next, we have the specification of the graphics card and here it is convenient to stop a little.
In all cases we are talking about dedicated graphics cards and the Nvidia brand with Max-Q design. Those that we are going to see are located between those of Pascal (R) architecture and those of Turing (S) architecture, both the RTX 20 and the GTX 16 have this letter. The letter that follows denotes the specific model and we have the following:
- SD: Nvidia GTX 1660 Ti SE: Nvidia RTX 2060 SF: Nvidia RTX 2070 SG: Nvidia RTX 2080 RD: Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti RE: Nvidia GTX 1060 RF: Nvidia GTX 1070 RG: Nvidia GTX 1080 SLI
This will undoubtedly be the most important thing for the players. But we still have the character "X" located, or not, in the final code that determines whether or not it has an installed operating system. And the last code that will be the keyboard layout that it incorporates, we are interested in it being Spanish "ES".
As we see, it is not difficult to interpret the information that the manufacturer gives us, although the rest of the specifications we will have to know by looking at their specifications. This nomenclature is maintained for the rest of the brand's series.
Gaming technologies of MSI laptops
MSI also makes its own technology available to the user or in association with other manufacturers of components such as sound or keyboards, to give us the best possible quality in products. It is worth seeing some of the most prominent, which will appear in the description of their products.
Cooler Boost Trinity + IT and MSI Shift
One of the maximum exponents that differentiates this GS series is the cooling system, which we have already discussed in previous sections. It has a triple turbine fan system with 6 or 7 heatpipes to cool the entire CPU, GPU and VRM system of the equipment. In addition, we have MSI's own software to manage the RPM of the fans.
Shift technology makes different energy profiles available to the user that can be quickly selected with the key combination "FN + F7"
MSI Dragon Center 2.0
Dragon Center is the quintessential MSI software for team management and monitoring. It is a software with a gaming interface in which we can see temperatures, RPM and the load of the main hardware. But we will also have the possibility of creating fan profiles, modifying parameters of the screen, the sound system, the lighting, etc. Quite recommendable we must say.
Thunderbolt 3 and Matrix Display
The Thunderbolt interface has no presentation at this point, we already know that it is an Intel technology capable of transferring data at a speed of 40 Gb / s. It works through the USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-C of the laptops that implement it and provides 100W of battery charge.
But Thunderbolt is also useful for connecting multiple displays to our laptop, for example, for design and multimedia content creation environments. It is called the Matrix Display, and it is basically the ability that some models in this series have to connect three 4K screens next to the main one on the same computer. It will be done through an HDMI, a DisplayPort 1.2 and Thunderbolt 3.
Thin Bezel and True Color on screens
We continue with more technologies than MSI has its products, at this point it will not be a surprise to anyone that the manufacturer Taiwanes was celebrating being the brand with the largest and fastest development in its monitors today. Everything he has learned in his desktop monitors has been implemented in the laptops with enough success, being the ones that offer the greatest gaming benefits today.
All their laptops have high- quality IPS-level panels and 100% sRGB color space in some cases and 95% NTSC in others thanks to True Color technology that improves color fidelity and readjusts the curve of CIE diagrams. In the same way, they are really compact equipment with more than 82% of useful surface thanks to frames of only 5 mm on the side.
Gaming sound system
We mainly have two differentiating elements in these MSI laptops , Dynaudio and Nahimic 3. The first is an evolution of the 2W speakers that installed the equipment that provides 50% more bass and 10 dBA more sensitivity in increasing volume. Precisely for these improvements, MSI has decided to withdraw the Woofer speaker in the new generation models.
And the second is the well-known brand of Nahimic condensers, which also provide the ability to virtualize 7.1 surround sound in headphones thanks to management software that we recommend.
RGB Mystic Light keyboards
The MSI keyboards also enjoy a good opinion by the community, they are keyboards that come from the hand of SteelSeries with some chiclet- oriented gaming keys with great touch and very little activation path. Virtually all current models, and of course all those that we will see here, have RGB backlighting capable of representing up to 16.8 million colors and in many different effects thanks to MSI Mystic Light technology.
Basically there are two variants, the most basic keyboards with the management of three lighting zones, and those that have key-to-key lighting addressing. In fact, they are divided into two other variants, one in which only the lower part (Regular Backlit) of the key is illuminated, and the other with transparent keys on the side (Silver Linning Print) with a greater amount of illumination.
MSI GS Stealth series with 8th and 9th generation Intel processors - our recommended
After this brief introduction to get to know this family of laptops better, we will go on to see the models that, for us, are the most recommended from the point of view of the gamer user.
In all of them we have purely gaming features, such as high-frequency refresh screens, Intel 6-core processors, Nvidia dedicated graphics card and even M.2 NVMe HDD + SSD storage in many of them and more details that we will see in each series. We have chosen only models with 8th and 9th generation Intel processors because they are the newest, although GS Stealth includes even computers with 6th generation CPUs.
We must keep in mind that these powerful laptops are just below MSI's highest performance range, the Titan Series. And together with their Max-Q design they are possibly the most balanced on the market in quality / performance / price for gaming.
MSI series GS65, GS75, GS63, GS73 Stealth the top of the range of ultra fine design
And how could it be otherwise, let's talk a little about the general characteristics of these laptops and then start by talking about the most current models of the GS series, it is the fifth generation or GS65. Well, in this 5th GS series it has some equipment in which design and elegance have been renewed and refined even more. MSI has opted for an all- aluminum construction with gold details on all the bezels of the team, as well as in the ventilation holes, in a thickness of only 17.9 mm, and a weight of 1.88 Kg for the teams of 15.6 inches and 18.95 mm and a weight of 2.25 for 17.3-inch equipment.
In all of them we have opted for IPS-level panel displays with Full HD resolution and 240 Hz or 144 Hz depending on whether we are on models with 9th gen CPUs. or 8th gen. respectively, and with ultra thin frames. They offer a battery with an approximate duration of 8 h at 82 Wh, which is not bad at all models. Likewise, the sound system consists of a 2W double speaker with Nahimic 3 technology and management , DynAudio to improve bass and volume and a DAC SABER Hi-Fi to improve the experience in headphones. As for network connectivity, we have Killer 1550 chips for Wi-Fi and Killer E2500 for LAN across the range. We do not know yet if the new models will have Wi-Fi 6, we imagine that they do.
MSI includes in all the equipments a chiclet RGB key-to-key keyboard from SteelSteries with full customization, and watch out, because it also has Thunderbolt 3 connectivity with Matrix Display capacity of up to three screens with HDMI + DP + Thunderbolt 3. Finally, the cooling system is Cooler Boost Trinity, although we can distinguish between 15.6-inch equipment with 6 heatpipes and 17.3-inch equipment with 7 heatpipes. Undoubtedly many common characteristics in all models, so let's see the specifics of each family.
GS65 Stealth with 9th Gen Intel Core and GeForce RTX 20
Soon the manufacturer will put all the models on sale, but for now we have two models with Nvidia RTX 2070 and 2080 Max-Q, although there will also be a model with RTX 2060. These versions undoubtedly stand out for installing the new Intel Core i7-9750H 6-core and 12-wire that improve performance by around 20% over 8th Gen. The GS65s don't have 2.5 ”storage, so they opt for 512, 1, or 2TB M.2 PCIe x4 SSDs, along with an extra expansion slot.
Another great novelty is the inclusion of a 240Hz 7ms instead of 144Hz FullHD IPS-level screen to improve even more, if possible those of the previous generation. Obviously they will be the most expensive in addition to the 17.3-inch versions, but they are the most powerful in the entire range.
MSI GS65 Stealth 9SF-454ES - 15.6 "FHD Laptop (Intel Core i7-9750H, 16 * 2GB RAM, 1TB SSD, GeForce RTX 2070 MAX Q 8GB GDDR6, Windows 10 Home) - Spanish QWERTY Keyboard Intel Processor Core i7-9750H (6 cores, 12 MB Cache, 2.6 GHz up to 4.5 GHz); RAM 16 * 2 GB DDR4, 2666 MHz EUR 2, 804.39 MSI GS65 Stealth 9SG-453ES - 15.6 "FHD (Intel Core i7-9750H, 16 * 2 GB RAM, 2 TB SSD, GeForce RTX 2080 MAX Q 8 GB GDDR6, Windows 10 Home) - Spanish QWERTY keyboard Intel Core i7-9750H processor (6 cores, 12 MB Cache, 2.6 GHz up to 4.5 GHz); 16 * 2 GB DDR4 RAM, 2666 MHz EUR 3, 549.99MSI GS65 Stealth with 8th Gen Intel Core and GeForce RTX 20
Of these teams we do have all or almost all models currently, and the ones we provide here are between 1, 700 euros and 3, 000 approximately. Obviously all of them have Nvidia RTX 2080, 2070 and 2060 inside, in addition to the Intel Core i7-8750H processor, and between 16 and 32 GB of RAM.
In this case we do have hybrid storage, which we definitely recommend with 1TB SSD M.2 PCIe drives, to store large amounts of games. We remember that it does not have a 2.5-inch slot. As we already anticipated, these teams have a 15.6-inch FullHD screen with a frequency of 144 Hz at 7ms. In these models we did not find Wi-Fi 6 in any of them. We can see an interesting price range with very high performance too.
MSI GS65 Stealth 8SE-038ES - Ultrathin Gaming Laptop 15.6 "FullHD 144Hz (Coffeelake i7-8750H, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, Nvidia RTX 2060 6GB, Windows 10 Advanced) Spanish QWERTY keyboard 15.6" FHD (1920 * 1080), IPS- Level 144Hz 7ms 72% NTSC Thin Bezel, 100% sRGB; GeForce RTX 2060, GDDR6 6GB MSI GS65 Stealth 8SE-037ES - Ultrathin 15.6 "FullHD 144Hz gaming laptop (Coffeelake i7-8750H, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD, Nvidia RTX 2060 6GB, Windows 10 Advanced) Spanish QWERTY keyboard 15.6" FHD (1920 * 1080), IPS-Level 144Hz 7ms 72% NTSC Thin Bezel, 100% sRGB; GeForce RTX 2060, GDDR6 6GB 2, 199.99 EUR MSI GS65 Stealth 8SF-035ES - Ultrathin 15.6 "FullHD 144Hz gaming laptop (Coffeelake i7-8750H, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, Nvidia RTX 2070 8GB, Windows 10 Advanced) QWERTY keyboard Spanish 15.6 "FHD (1920 * 1080), IPS-Level 144Hz 7ms 72% NTSC Thin Bezel, 100% sRGB; GeForce RTX 2070, GDDR6 8GB MSI GS65 Stealth 8SG-029ES - 15.6 "FullHD 144Hz Gaming Laptop (Coffeelake i7-8750H, 32GB RAM, 1TB HDD + 1TB SSD, Nvidia RTX 2080 8GB, Windows 10 Advanced) Spanish QWERTY 15.6" keyboard FHD (1920 * 1080), IPS-Level 144Hz 7ms 72% NTSC Thin Bezel, 100% sRGB; GeForce RTX 2080, GDDR6 8GBMSI GS65 Stealth Thin, two versions with GTX 1060 and 1070
Of these two, we recommend the one based on the Nvidia GTX 1060 with all the power of the GS65 models with 8th gen CPU. but at a slightly more affordable price for those users who do not need an RTX family card yet. Let's remember that with the 1060 we can play the latest titles in 1080p without any problem.
It has an identical design to the rest of the models, although inside it has three M.2 slots instead of two. Its screen is also Full HD 144 Hz.
MSI GS65 Stealth Thin 8RE-252ES - Gaming 15.6 "Full HD 144 Hz Laptop (Coffeelake i7-8750H, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 6GB, Windows 10 Advanced) QWERTY Keyboard Spanish Processor Intel Coffeelake i7-8750H; Memory 16GB RAM, DDR4; 512GB SSD hard drive; Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card, 6GB GDDR5 € 1, 975.43MSI GS75 Stealth series 17.3 inches, in case the GS65 is not enough
The GS75 are larger equipment, specifically 396 x 259.5 mm, although not necessarily thicker, since they only measure 18.95 mm, designed at 2.28 Kg. Its design is as polished and elegant as its little brothers, in addition to incorporating an excellent touchpad 35% wider than traditional 4-point multi-touch.
Possibly the most differential element is its screen, instead of 15, now we have 17.3 inches with ultra thin frames. A IPS-level panel at Full HD 1080p resolution that offers a frequency of 144 Hz on all models, and reducing its response time to 3ms instead of 7. It is optimized with True Color technology giving 100% sRGB, being equipment highly recommended also for design due to its wide color space, although we do not have Pantone certification.
Another element that improves is the storage, with a total of three M.2 slots available instead of 2, and a slightly larger battery to reach those 8 hours of autonomy. In this case it is presented with an external source of 180W for the versions with RTX2060 and with 230W for RTX 2070 and 2080. Finally, its heatsink increases from 6 heatpipes to 7, so they will be cooler equipment than the previous ones.
MSI GS75 Stealth with GeForce RTX 20 series and 8th and 9th generation CPU
As in the previous case, MSI has swelled the units of this series with equipment that carries the latest from Intel, exactly as it happens in the GS65. So again we will have an Intel Core i7-9750H processor that will perform like a charm with increased interior space and a more powerful cooling system.
Something that we would have liked is that the double 2W speaker comes together with a 3W woofer that for example implements the GS73 series. In any case, the sound system of this generation has improved in quality. There are still few models for sale, and they are around 3, 400 euros in the case of the RTX 2080 Max-Q. Little by little more will come out and we will place them here, along with the new specifications.
MSI GS75 Stealth 9SG-267ES - 17.3 "FHD Laptop (Intel Core i7-9750H, 32GB RAM, 2TB SSD, GeForce RTX 2080 MAX Q 8GB GDDR6, Windows 10 Home) - Spanish QWERTY keyboard Intel Core i7 processor -9750H (6 cores, 12 MB Cache, 2.6 GHz up to 4.5 GHz); 16 * 2 GB DDR4 RAM, 2666 MHz EUR 3, 200.00And here we leave the computers with 8th generation processor with Intel Core i7-8750H with up to 32 GB of RAM. The prices are between 1, 800 euros for the version with RTX 2060 and 512 SSD and 2, 600 euros for the version with RTX 2080 with a very fast RAID 0 of 1TB SSD.
MSI GS75 Stealth 8SE-066ES - Ultrathin Gaming 17.3 "FullHD 144Hz Laptop (Coffeelake i7-8750H, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, Nvidia RTX 2060 6GB, Windows 10 Advanced) Spanish QWERTY Keyboard 17.3" FHD (1920 * 1080), IPS- Level 144Hz 3ms 72% NTSC Thin Bezel, 100% sRGB; GeForce RTX 2060, GDDR6 6GB MSI GS75 Stealth 8SF, Ultrathin Full HD 144Hz Laptop (Coffeelake I7-8750H, 16Gb Ram, 512Gb Ssd, Nvidia RTX 2070 8B) Spanish QWERTY Keyboard, Ethernet, Windows 10, 17.3 ", Black 17.3" FHD (1920 * 1080), IPS-Level 144Hz 3ms 72% NTSC Thin Bezel, 100% sRGB; GeForce RTX 2070, GDDR6 8GB EUR 2, 469.00 MSI GS75 Stealth 8SG-064ES - Ultrathin Gaming Laptop 17.3 "FullHD 144Hz (Coffeelake i7-8750H, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, Nvidia RTX 2080 8GB, Windows 10 Advanced) QWERTY Keyboard Spanish 17.3 "FHD (1920 * 1080), IPS-Level 144Hz 3ms 72% NTSC Thin Bezel, 100% sRGB; GeForce RTX 2080, GDDR6 8GBMSI GS63 Stealth series, with Nvidia GTX 10 Series and very competitive prices
We also see it very interesting to include in this list both the GS63 family and the GS73, located a previous generation than those we have already seen, but also updated in terms of processor. In fact, we have exactly the same, Intel Core i7-8750H with 16 and 32 GB of DDR4-2666 MHz RAM. Obviously there is no 9th generation CPU.
This series, in the three models that are offered, we will be able to see two types of screen, even on this smaller diagonal of 15.6 inches. On the one hand, we have a 120 Hz Full HD level-IPS panel with a refresh rate, and 3 ms of response speed, which we recommend long against the following. And on the other, we can also choose a UHD 4K screen at 60 Hz. In any case, it supports Matrix Display with 3 screens in HDMI + DP + Thunderbolt 3.
The dedicated graphics cards of the Pascal architecture have also been maintained, specifically the Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti, GTX 1060 and GTX 1070, although it is true that we are going to recommend a laptop with RTX 2060 before one with GTX 1070 for performance / price reasons.. The storage options are a little more limited, just an M.2 PCIe slot and yes, expandable with 2.5 "HDD.
The design is not as elegant as the new generation, but aluminum is also used in its entirety and in black. The keyboard also comes from SteelSeries, although in two versions, one with only three RGB zones and the other key-to-key RGB. A positive thing is also having the Killer 1550 chip as Wi-Fi and Killer 2500 as LAN, exactly the same as the GS65 and GS75.
We leave you now with the two most recommended models under our opinion, 1, 200 and 1, 400 euros.
MSI GS63 Stealth 8RD-043XES - Gaming 15.6 "FullHD 120 Hz Laptop (Intel Core i7-8750H, 16GB RAM, 1TB HDD + 256GB SSD, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050Ti 4GB, No Op. And to end this comparison, we are going to see in more detail the older brothers of the GS63 range, they are the GS73. With three different graphics variations, thanks again to the GTX 1050 Ti, GTX 1060 and GTX 1070. And again we could opt for the first two versions. These will also be available with different storage and display configurations.
It is possible that on these 17.3-inch screens, some users may be interested in 4K resolution for graphic design, CAD or video editing. In any case, we have exactly the same two settings Full HD 120Hz at 3ms, and 4K at 60Hz. Both with 100% sRGB and Thunderbolt 3 connection for multiscreen.
Storage capacity is increased a bit with dual M.2 PCIe x4 / SATA slot alongside 2.5 ”HDD. For the rest, we have no news in terms of design, expression or elements of interaction and connectivity. The prices we handle are between 1, 350 euros to 2, 100 euros.
