We continue to bring news from CES 2019 that is already in its final stretch. This time we have information about PowerColor and its new external TBX-180, TBX 240FU and TBX-750FA external eGPU cabinets. All three have a main connection through Thunderbolt 3 at 40 Gbbps, ideal for increasing the graphic power of our laptops.

New Thunderbolt 3 eGPU Enclosures Great for Laptops

These new cabinets for mounting external GPUs are gaining more followers every day, who want to use equipment with little base graphics performance, to provide them with enough power to make them good gaming stations. In this case they are cabinets that are characterized by having Thunderbolt 3 connectivity, a high-speed interface and ideal for laptops with this type of new generation ports such as Mack Books or most Max-Q designs.

Well, we start with the PowerColor TBX-750FA model, which in our opinion is the most interesting of all. This cabinet features a built-in power supply of no less than 750W, capable of holding graphics cards up to 335 x 170 x 58mm. In other words, we have space and power for practically any graph on the market. Connectivity is also interesting, as in addition to the main 40Gbps Thuderbolt port, we also have 1 Gigabit ethernet port, 5 USB 3.0, 1 SD 4.0 and 1 SATA.

Enclosures that integrate an AMD Radeon RX GPU

Two other cabinets that already integrate a factory GPU have also been presented, this being an AMD Radeon RX 570 and 560. Let's see them in more detail.

The first model to try will be the TBX-240U or also called Mini Pro. This model integrates an 8 GB AMD Radeon RX 570 with an additional fan in the chassis to facilitate air exchange with the outside. This system supplies 75W through a PCIe slot with a limited GPU power of 150W. Instead of having a built-in power supply, they use an external supply adapter. The cabinet in question has a Thunderbolt 3 interface , 1 Gigabit Ethernet and 2 USB 3.0. The cost of this model will be $ 499.

The second model that we have, the TBX-180F, or also called Mini, has an AMD Radeon RX 560 of 4 GB and similar characteristics regarding power, but in this case we will only have Thunderbolt 3 connectivity and a Fast Ethernet port. The price of this unit will be $ 359.

The limitations of these cabinets place a compatibility with Mini or ITX format graphics cards of no more than 175x131x38 mm. The list for now is GTX 1060, GTX 1070, RX 570 and RX 560 in this type of format. In addition, the power limitation is at a maximum of 150W. It remains to be seen if the new RTX or RX Vega will become compatible with these cabinets.

The brand is also expected to launch another similar cabinet at a price of $ 199, without having given details of it, but of course it will be of worse specifications than these two.

As we already said, these teams are aimed at users with low-performance graphics laptops, to enable their use in lower-middle-range gaming. Of course the first TBX-750FA model, yes it is more interesting to configure higher performance eGPU stations.

Do you see any of these three models interesting for a possible laptop with low graphics performance? Would you consider buying an eGPU cabinet?
