A patent that Sony is working on has been found and could be related to what the Japanese company will show on February 20. It could be because working on it does not imply that it will come true.
The patent shows a device called EyePad consisting of a tablet-like surface capable of recognizing complex gestures in three dimensions. This is possible thanks to two cameras in the corners that are the eyes of a stereoscopic system. By moving your fingers or other objects in the air on the illuminated surface of the tablet, the cameras would record the movements of the user.
The EyePad doesn't just rely on gestures. The surface of the device itself is tactile, and the sketches show a handful of physical controls on the edges. The diagrams also suggest accelerometers and synchronization with the PlayStation Eye camera so that the relative position of the controller in space is also measurable and usable in games.
Although the EyePad doesn't look like being comfortable as a primary controller, its possibilities for augmented reality and motion sensors deepen the gap opened by WonderBook.
