Common problems in windows 10 anniversary and how to fix it

With the expired Windows 10 free upgrade offer, Microsoft has released the latest major update for the operating system. Since Windows 10 is constantly evolving, this version brings many new features and fixes to the problems people had with previous versions.

However, with a new version, comes a whole new set of problems. From minor bugs to huge issues, let's take a look at the changes made to Windows 10, what this update brings, and how it can be fixed.

15 Known Issues in Windows 10 Anniversary

Although there may be some unknown issues during the Anniversary implementation, it should be remembered that the issue is not always with the operating system. Some other factors could be causing the problem, including outdated drivers, software conflicts, or certain custom settings.

Applications anchored to the Taskbar

While the Anniversary update promises it won't change any of your stuff, you'll find that Microsoft Edge, File Explorer, and Windows Store are back in the Taskbar after installation.

If you do not want to have Edge and the Store in this bar, simply click on its icons and choose "Unpin from the Task Bar" to get everything back to the previous state.

While you are doing this, you may also notice the pen icon on the right side of the Task Bar. This is a shortcut to the new version of Windows Ink. If you don't want to use it, right-click on an empty space in the Taskbar and disable the option Show Windows Ink Workspace.

Reinstatement

Along with additional applications on the Taskbar, Anniversary resets some of its default applications to suggested Microsoft programs, such as Groove Music for audio files. To put this as it was before, go to Settings> System> Default Applications and choose the one you like best for each type.

Extra announcements in the Start Menu

Windows 10 has brought annoying suggested apps to your Start Menu, and Anniversary doubles the number of them. To remove them, visit Settings> Personalization> Start and uncheck "Show suggestions occasionally on Start. "

Skype Preview is installed and connects

Skype is still a decent service, but Microsoft is constantly pushing it. Even if you have the desktop version of Skype installed, you can still see Skype Preview installed after Anniversary. The worst part of this is that it starts automatically with your Microsoft account, which is extremely annoying if you do not want to be bothered by Skype contacts or not directly use it.

To solve this problem, write Skype Preview in the Start Menu, click on the result and select "Uninstall". If you want to keep it installed, but only use it occasionally, click on the user icon at the bottom left (within Skype Preview), and click on "Logout".

Partitions are missing from your hard drive

One of the worst problems is that sometimes Windows does not display partitions on hard drives correctly. There is a possibility that Windows will detect the disk drive as RAW format instead of NTFS, which means that another tool is needed to recover the data. This may make you think that you have lost all the data on the drive, but this is not the case.

Using a tool like EaseUS Partition Master or AOMEI Partition Assistant, you can right-click on any affected partition or drive (usually displayed as not located) and choose to run partition recovery or wizard. This will make the drive recover and usable again.

Update error 0x8024200D

If you receive this error message when trying to run the Anniversary update, you will need to run the Windows Update Fix It Tool to clear the errors. If that doesn't work, try using The Media Creation Tool to create a USB drive with the Windows 10 installation information on it. Then run the update to keep all your settings.

Storage errors

If you are low on disk space when you try to run the update, you may get an error telling you that you need more space.

Incompatible software

Windows can tell you if an application on your PC is incompatible with the update, which will block the update system. Generally, this is caused by an antivirus program, so it tries to disable Avast, AVG, Avira, or whatever antivirus suite is running, and then run the update again. If this doesn't work, uninstall the app temporarily to complete the update.

Windows will not activate

If you're getting an error that Windows can't activate, try waiting a day and check once more (servers shut down with Anniversary). Remember that since the free update has expired, it cannot be updated from Windows 7 or 8.1, so you must purchase a new key.

However, as of now, Windows 10 can be activated with a Windows 7 or 8.x key, so if you have one of those versions and are having trouble activating, give it a try before Microsoft deactivates this option..

Anniversary makes Aero Glass fail

If you use the free Aero Glass software to restore the Aero look of Windows 7, be sure to uninstall it before running Anniversary. Glass users have reported huge problems trying to run the update.

Aero Glass doesn't work well after the update, so it's best to wait for a fix from the developers.

Remove Cortana

Before Anniversary, Cortana could be easily disabled to reduce the search box to basic functionality. Now, Microsoft doesn't want you to disable Cortana, so you'll have to find another solution.

Windows 10 users need to do this by editing the registry. Open it with "Regedit" in the Start Menu and scroll down:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Policies \ Microsoft \ Windows \ Windows Search

The Windows Search folder should not be present, click on the main Windows folder and select New> Key; call it Windows Search. Then click on the Windows Search folder and select New> DWORD (32-bit) value. Name it AllowCortana and set it to 0. As with all the edits you make to Registry, turn it off and on again or restart it to take effect.

Cortana is not there

Some people might make Cortana welcome permanent in Windows 10, but other users have reported issues not seeing Cortana in the first place. If you are stuck, a simple trip to the Registry can fix things.

Type "Regedit" into the Start Menu (remember to be careful when making changes here). Go to the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Search Change BingSearchEnabled

Change the value from 0 to 1 and restart. Cortana should be running correctly now.

Games malfunction

Major updates can cause big problems with games on Windows, and Anniversary is no exception. If you are experiencing low frame rate in games after the upgrade, try disabling the Game Bar DVR feature and then head to Registration:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ PolicyManager \ default \ ApplicationManagement \ AllowGameDVR

Set this value to 0 and reboot the system. If this doesn't help, check your graphics card drivers to make sure they're valid to date and not removed by Annyversary.

Unreadable Clock Font

The clock in the lower right corner of the Task Bar is a useful way to quickly check the time, but some users have reported issues where the font turns black and becomes unreadable.

Type "gpedit.msc" in the Start Menu and go to Computer Configuration> Windows Settings> Security Settings> Local Policies> Security Options. Here, enable User Account Control: Administrator Approval Mode for the Default Account. Restart your computer.

Frozen Start Menu and Explorer

After the update, some users have reported that the Start Menu was refusing to open, and the applications remained frozen. If you can, run Windows Start Menu Fix It as it is a great first attempt to resolve these issues. If this doesn't work, you should create a new user profile to see if the current one is corrupted.

Open a command line as administrator and type the following command to create a new user:

net user / add To make this new user an administrator, type this: net localgroup Administrators / add

Once you have confirmed that this new profile works well, you can move everything.
