Microsoft does everything possible so that its next console, nicknamed Project Scorpio, has the latest technologies on the market. Just last week the company decided to unveil some of the console's features, such as that it will offer native 4K support, improved graphics on 1080p TVs, virtual reality content support, and much more.

Project Scorpio: Variable refresh rates and support for 4K and 8K at 120FPS

However, a new report from Digital Foundry points out that Project Scorpio will also feature AMD's FreeSync technology and the next standard for HDMI 2.1 variable refresh rates, which is great news for gamers.

In case you didn't know, AMD FreeSync and HDMI 2.1 will allow compatible monitors to refresh frames when they're ready, not when the screen dictates. In this way, the frame rate would no longer be affected and even other problems related to color reproduction or image flickering would be eliminated.

HDMI 2.1 is probably the most interesting technology because it has support for Dynamic HDR, which adapts to changes from one scene to another or from one frame to another. It also allows for higher resolutions and higher refresh rates, including 4K and 8K content playback at 120 frames per second.

At the moment, PC monitors are the only ones to have support for variable refresh rates, so anyone connecting a Project Scorpio to a monitor with AMD FreeSync will benefit from this technology sooner.

On the other hand, for those who want to enjoy older games, Digital Foundry points out that even Xbox One and Xbox 360 games that benefit from backward compatibility in Project Scorpio may have variable refresh rates.

At the moment neither the release date nor the official name of this new Microsoft console is known, although everyone calls it Project Scorpio or simply Xbox Scorpio. However, we expect the company to present more details about it during the E3 2017 event.

To finish, we leave you with a video of the guys from Digital Foundry where you can see a demo of the new capabilities of Project Scorpio.
