Silica project: microsoft optical memory based on silica glass
Table of contents:
As you may already know, the giant Microsoft has tentacles in all the fields of technology that we know of. Therefore, we like to hear news of any of its variants. Recently, the cloud computing branch has unveiled the Silica Project , a new optical storage media based on resistant silica glass.
Microsoft
Better defined as optical storage media, these modules are 7.5 × 7.5x2cm size plates capable of storing information.
At best, we can currently cluster 75.6 GB of data (taking correction data into account) .
These optical storage media work with a series of nanometric grids where they store the information of 0's and 1's . To prevent errors from being generated, they contain a kind of AI that protects the component from wear and tear. However, according to Microsoft , this has been highly reinforced by using quartz crystals in Project Silica .
According to the company itself:
A laser encodes data on a glass creating three-dimensional layers in grids and nanometric deformations at different depths and angles. Machine Learning algorithms read data by decoding images and patterns created as if they were polarized light sources through glass.
Apart from these structural innovations, the Silica Project proposes a new standard for data storage.
While a conventional CD lasts a couple of centuries if stored in good condition, these memories are supposed to support:
- Being boiled Suffering from extreme heat Being in the microwave Suffering from large magnetic pulses Splashes and water Burns
This would provide us with a secure source capable of storing invaluable data such as world history information.

The direction this technology will take is yet to be determined, but it is truly impressive.
